I prefer stairway. Both are great songs, but I love the building structure in stairway. When Bonham comes in with the drums in the 'If there's a bustle in your hedgerow" verse, it's stunning.

I think a more exciting comparison might be between Bohemian Rhapsody and Don't Stop Believing. Stairway to Heaven is very subdued and downbeat ballad.

A few more epics that didn't reach the level of the songs in the OP...

Soma by The Smashing Pumpkins

Jungleland by Bruce Springsteen

Innuendo by Queen:

Stairway- it perfected the formula of the slow build to an epic finish. Bohemian Rhapsody sounds silly in comparison (but nothing wrong with that)

Bohemian Rhapsody all day. Much more tempo-breaking and a mash of different styles that shouldn't work together + vocals are way better (but Mercury was probably the greatest singer of all time, hard to compete with that). On a pure technical side Stairway to Heaven is a much more simpler song.

Bohemain Rhapsody and it's not even close. Stairway to heaven is one of the dullest songs I've had the misfortune to listen to.

Innuendo is so fucking amazing.

Bohemian Rhapsody. But two very different kind of songs.

And Freddie > almost everybody else. Stumbling to this thread, I just happened to be listening Love of My Life and the feeling Freddie poured into his singing was just incredible.

who would you say comes close to Freddie as a singer?

Really? That's lame of Led Zep....

I prefer Stairway to Heaven but I prefer Queen by far overall.
The theatrical cut of Wayne's World had the first couple of notes played in the "No Stairway" scene. Zep demanded over $100,000 just for those couple of notes, so they had to remove it for the home video version.

BR is a musical master piece in terms of structure, stairway is a pretty standard rock/pop tune, just done amazingly well.

I refuse to choose.

As for other epics, I have been grooving to this lately:

The song is all about slightly changing dynamics. Interesting lyrics too.

Queen are too novelty for me, i can't really take them seriously.

For me its Led Zeppelin all the way.

Well Zeppelin did sort of steal the opening rift from Taurus- Spirit

Comparisons

And a bunch of their songs are taken from other artists and old Blues songs. So, yeah Bohemian Rhapsody wins.

I don't get any enjoyment out of Bohemian Rhapsody personally. Probably my least favorite Queen hit.

Stairway is overplayed and meme'd but it's still great. If Stairway or Freebird come on the radio I'm not touching the dial.

Page and Plant really look like Merry and Pippin in that pic, lol.

It's an impossible question for me. Both songs are classic and amazing. I get more emotionally involved with Stairway - the buildup is fantastic and the song is so ethereal halfway through, then Bonham comes in and it's something incredible.
Rhapsody, on the other hand, is genius. Hard to not get away stunned from the first listen of it. It's the quintessential Queen manifesto, it has everything from the falsetto choirs to May's amazing guitar solos.
