I'm not going to blame Microsoft for it. That was Sony's choice. I will say that there's no way Sony could have pulled off the mind f*** campaign to convince so many people that paying for online play was good. I'll give you that.

Sony has Nintendo and valve to worry about without Microsoft. In fact, there would really be more competition since you would have three real companies and not this extra one with an anti-competitive past and future trying to either buy the others or wipe them off the map.

Sony was turning things around before they followed suit. Their first try was actually a digital rented game library with no requirement for online play. But they saw all that free money...
A big consideration for sony following is a fiduciary responsibility to not leave that money on the table, but they tried to be better at first and I think they could have kept trying. Maybe I'm a dreamer.
Nintendo held out for a long time, too. Of course them having mp games as a low priority had something to do with that.
I do think that if sony tried it first, they would not have got away with it. I've yet to see sony do pr/influence the way ms is capable of. After announcing xbl was paid, forums lit up with people telling you how great it was to pay for internet-based play.

You're right, but that's basically what's being said.
Paid online mulitplayer was a dick move and they announced it in a sneaky way, but businesswise it made sense.

Where I'm differing is that I'm avoiding "this company made that company do it", "this needs to do this so the other will do that" to distinguish the moving parts. Seems more substantive than simply "who started it".

Oh yeah we're fucked on that front. A $400 ps5 seems like a great deal till you add $60 over 7 years on to it. Seriously I look at mine ($500 one) and it looks more like it's cost me $680, so far.

I don't think valve has any competition. Not even the epic store with it's free weekly games can stop steam/valve. nintendos not competition either for sony. Nintnedo is always a gen behind and does whatever it wants and ppl usually buy it (cept the wiiu which I sadly own)

It's not the dramatized ps/xb battle. That is some ford vs chevy stuff. But there's enough overlap for the other three to be stealing users from each other.
The rumblings of switch 2 all point to something that is trying to keep up with contemporary ports. Kotick said they would want to get cod on switch. Console players are noticing steam deck. Sony is using steam as their entry point to pc gaming, co-mingling the communities a bit and enticing them with an alternative to an expensive new build. Also their end point as they've gone right into valve's embrace.
My friend was just putting together a so-so pc build that was adding up and he said, "shit should I just save a bunch of money and headache and get a PS5." He didn't, but he was serious.
What about the case of the multi-platform player? A kid has a switch for two years but now he's in 6th grade and prefers to play apex on the laptop. Nintendo sold a console but they lost the user anyway. I myself use PS5, switch, and steam. That switch chills there unless we're playing Zelda. Meanwhile, Steam and PS5 get money from me buying more than I can play. The PS5 also gets the online fee which is money I could have spent on steam. I have that switch but I'm not buying games and I never used it much.
I realize the competition I'm describing is not the same as the xb vs ps rivalry. But in the big picture, a lot of that is drama. The pressure on Sony will be different, but if they were slacking off, normies will absolutely cross shop with Nintendo and pc. They just want to play games.
Normies are not necessarily seeing these categories we project onto the platforms. They are more likely choose one or another simply based on what their friends use.

Think about the difference in leadership and decision-making.
You can absolutely guarantee Sony considered two different schema for PS5 just like this and either at the engineer level or the executive level that decision was tossed in favor of one schema one with and one without a disc drive.
The pressure on Microsoft led to bad decision-making. "We need to seriously undercut Sony on price" but in reality undercutting the PS5 Digital by 100 isn't the win anyone could think it is...
My advice for people in almost any line of work is stack good decisions on top of each other and the rest of it will probably work itself out at the end of the day. Making bad decisions for the right reasons doesn't usually work out.
