Sony president wants to improve margins on their multi-platform releases (Updated w/ analysis)

but how do you grow console if you release day 1 1st party games on other platforms like PC?
I'm one of the rare ones, but most folks who have a decent PC don't wanna play on console and are less like likely to buy it.

Hell even I have waited 3 years to purchase a PS5. Hiroki's words, admittedly, do make me second guess my plans.

I think this constant push for more power and bigger budget games is unhealthy for the industry.

Even sitting on the sidelines in regards to consoles I can clearly see how much worse things have gotten. Back when I bought consoles the games designed only for your new console ramped up quickly.
This generation saw cross gen last longer than ever, because they need the sales. New releases are so few and far between because of the time and money to create new ones. It's not what it used to be.

I think Nintendo has been the smartest. They held back, and their budgets are a tiny fraction of what Sony's are. The sad part is I don't think PlayStation fans would be up for Switch level graphics.

As a PC gamer I'm happy with where we are. I was happy with where we were on PS3 and PS4. I'd love if we could just hit the pause button on this constant march towards bigger and badder and just enjoy what we've got. For the sake of the industry.
As someone who uses Steam and Nintendo platforms, I'm pretty content. However, looking at it without any bias, it feels like we're just taking whatever these companies throw at us without questioning it. They make it sound like it's the "gamers' fault" that games are overly complex and bloated. But come on, we all know we would've still loved Last of Us 2 if it had used the same engine and given us another compelling story. And suddenly, it's "gamers' fault" that Sony decided to stretch out Horizon 2 and God of War 2? It feels like these big shots and creative leads are offloading their dicey calls onto either the "plastic boxes" or the gamers themselves.

Yet, there's Nintendo, showing everyone how it's supposed to be done. But for some odd reason, it's like they're not even part of the conversation.

Xbox One and PS4 are probably in the 170 range. 10 million gamer growth over a decade isn't really a lot.
possibly not any growth there if you consider people who bought a ps4 then bought a ps4 pro are not new users and don't contribute to more sub revenue or game sales.

So, in short, AAA game development is so outrageously expensive, publishers have no choice but to try and shift as many copies as possible, regardless of platform.

Exclusivity is going the way of dinosaurs.

And Nintendo is a dinosaur.
They did it to themselves, no idea how they can spend so much for so little output.

that's just the point. a lot of pc gamers did have ps4's. A lot of them currently have switches. but only because those consoles have actual exclusives. it's a backwards, short-sighted way of thinking from playstation to think they can improve margins by devaluing their console exclusives.

i'm not even against sony making multiplatform games, like they used to in the past. it's just that every game should be coming to pc? then why bother getting this console at all?

Yes its insane. Nintendo has almost alot less revenue compared to ms and sony but the profit is higher than both combined. Why wouldn't they try to chase that. Wtf.

Bring on the day and date on PC Sony. Also to all you saying Xbox putting releases on PC it wasn't just that devalued the brand there was a concoction of fuck ups.

1) Microsoft released the Xbox one at a 100 dollars more than the PS4 and it wasn't as powerful.

2) The bad take on not being able to trade game discs and always online.

3) The Kinect at first being mandatory.

4) GamePass was the killer to devalue the brand.

It wasn't just releasing games on PC.

Alan Wake 2 bombed commercially.
Spider Man 2 has made a healthy profit.

Yes, but that's not the point. You can't spend 3x the budget of the first one for a game similar in scope that on the long run could sell less.

What I say is that you don't need that kind of budget for a triple-A looking and "feeling" game and Alan Wake 2 prove that.

That gaming PC I bought is starting to look like a better and better choice. If only it didn't come with Windows.

avin

So xbox traded their exclusives for playstation exclusives. I think either way that exclusive make the gaming industry alot more interesting no matter the platform.

Iam here for

Pc exclusives
Playstation exclusives
Xbox exclusives
Nintendo exclusives
And mobile exclusives.

Imo consoles lost their point in existence with loosing more and more benefits. Exclusives are basically the last hold out.
Traded? PlayStation launching exclusives like they just did with Helldivers on PC isn't a trade with Xbox for putting their games on playstation.

What the fuck did I wake up to today.

This gen sucks. Gaming is dying.
Honestly, it's the era of AA and indie gaming. AAA in its current state is coming to an end. Unless it's a multi million selling title, or full of successful GaaS shit, it's likely to fail. The budgets are extraordinary for these games so it must be very difficult to break even, let alone make a profit.

Look at Mario and Donkey Kong. Simple gameplay with a simple look. And it won't need to sell five million copies to break even.

Releasing games on PC was entirely irrelevant to Xbox One's poor sales. Xbox One sales were so bad that Phil Spencer announced in early 2016 that Microsoft would no longer reveal console sales numbers. Later that same year, Microsoft announced putting their games on PC. Xbox has never recovered from the Xbox One disaster, but anyone suggesting that disaster was caused by PC ports is engaging in revisionist history.

I blame 3 things.

1. People demanding 30+ hour, long ass games. Laughing and criticizing games that are less than 8 hours. No matter the quality.

2. Little fucking kids ruining gaming with their love of GAAS trash. Leading companies to lean further into the fortnite model.

3. MS training people to literally think buying games you like is BAD.

We are absolutely fucked.

Yea I feel ya, I been on PC since 2018...really 2013, but my gaming laptop broke...so I went back to consoles for last gen. Had Xbox One, Xbox One X and PS4. Went for the X over the Pro because it was more powerful for multiplat games and I could still play my PS4 Exclusives

Honestly I think that Sony is just better at making consoles and should always find a market for that. Good PC gaming to match what consoles can do right now does still require quite an investment.

Thing is, once you're in...you're in when it comes to PC. You upgrade when you want and choosing not too doesn't necessarily keep you from some of the latest and greatest games...you just might not be able to run them at full quality.

I think Sony is seeing dollar signs when looking at Helldivers 2. Released day and date and is doing very well. I think the smart move is to keep their system sellers exclusive to PS5 but to release smaller games and GaaS titles on as many platforms as they can.

Exactly the ship was sinking before they started doing PC ports.

What saved the ps3 the lasr few years of its lifetime. Cheaper console and a shitting of games you couldn't get anywhere else. Xbox had a major fuck up in with xbox one but they didnt try to bounce back. They basically gave up. They would have turned it around with good enough full exclusives.

Imagine the bank Sony would make releasing the spider-man games on all platforms.
It is an objective truth. MLB It's being a gold mine for Sony.

But in this business, winning on one hand can mean losing on the other. In this industry, losing brand power and fan loyalty is usually very negative in the long run.
It is a strange situation because it is a dead end. Right now no decision is certain to be the right one.

It was the publishers and developers who made those decisions, not the gamers. Nobody demanded that Last of Us 2 be double its length with top-tier graphics. That was Naughty Dog's call, and we would have embraced the game either way. Similarly, it was Rockstar's choice to put a pause on releasing new GTA titles, not the fans'. Online opinions don't really influence these outcomes significantly. Look at Nintendo—they recycled the open world from Breath of the Wild, and despite some calling it just "DLC," it still racked up sales of 20 million on a single platform. These are deliberate choices made by developers. And nobody told Rocksteady to spend a decade on a game that didn't hit the mark. That was their decision.

Sounds like they want to go full steam ahead on putting everything on PC and when they do Sony will fall faster than the Xbox brand is.

This is turning into a great week for gaming, and an absolute fucking nightmare for fanboys everywhere. Just need Nintendo to join the party and it really is a brave new world :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Call me when multiplatform means the same for both Sony and Microsoft.

Day 1 on PC in the near future for Sony?…Perhaps.

Day 1 on PC and Xbox for Sony…. Not likely in the short term or probably even long term.

Day 1 on PC and Sony for Microsoft? Tomorrow's meeting will hopefully illuminate a definitive path for them. We'll see.

All in all, at this point in time, neither company has provided a clear and digestible message. However, there are enough tea leaves on the Microsoft side to suggest that they would be the first to fully embrace "multiplatform" to mean Nintendo and Sony specifically. They already have day and date release on PC.

Furthermore, it seems like the bean counters are having much more say in the direction of both companies. I'm not sure if this is a good thing as they may be more reluctant to take risks on new titles. I hope they all remember that even the evergreen titles all began as a risk at some point. "No risk, no reward." "Fortune favors the bold, etc."

Maybe? No way to know. My point is that it is not factual to say PC ports caused Xbox's demise. People need to stop saying it is.

Well you are right but i think its fair to say that they had a bigger chance to bounce back if they didnt go that route.

Its also not safe to say that sony wont lose out on this new strategy.

how the fuck is any of this good for gaming?

play everything everywhere? miss me with that crap. it will water down products and reduce quality. These devs cant even get non broken games out on ONE platform, now they will have to make multiple versions, stretching themselves out further.

and you're championing for more live service GAAS trash?

how is ANY of this good? It shocks me how a gaming enthusiast can liek this news lmao

I guess we have to wait and see what that strategy really is first. We really don't even know what this interim CEO guy is proposing.

He needs to have a podcast.......next week.
