So with Xbox going the Sega route

The rise of handheld pcs like Steamdeck and the like have me thinking console like PCs will be the 3rd pillar. Especially if that's what MS gets behind.

Here We Go Again GIF

Isn't this like the 3rd time Xbox has died?

It's pretty much impossible for anyone to come into the traditional console space now and find success. The only consumers Apple and Valve would have there is a small % of their existing audience.

There's no place for another high-end console who plays 99% of the same games and has 99% same hardware than the others, that shit makes no sense.

Do something different

Imo Sony , MS and Nintendo should drop console and go only software, release everything into PC and thats it.

Sony and MS maybe, their games are mostly interchangeable with PC releases. I don't think Nintendo would be able to survive without their own consoles, they would lose the hardware and third-party licensing profit.

Consoles are about novelty and renewing the fun with new exciting ways to play. Keyboard and mouse + Steam is ancient and unexciting. I think Civilization VI has been on the top 10 best seller for the last century.

I mean, people are waiting for a new Nintendo hardware like kids hanging on ice cream counter

Is it Nintendo, PlayStation and PC or do you think a new challenger might come into the console space.
Nope, Playsation will drop their consoles too in the future.

The accelaration of technology is rapid at the moment. Its matter of time before everyone plays on cloud.

Also getting in to console business is very expensive.
30m consoles at 400$ is $12B investment. Not including other investment like 3rd party deals, marketing and hiring teams to manage your product.

You are seeing close to $20b+ investment.

People who say this stupid shit haven't taken one actual second to look at the numbers. Sony are on track to outsell the PS4 and have taken in billions upon billions in gaming revenue. Nobody with a functioning brain would look at these numbers and see signs that Sony should even consider dumping the console.

People who this "Playstation will inevitably dump consoles" are officially in the category of people i can no longer take seriously. You are simply not living in reality.

Please I would love for someone...anyone...with numbers driven data...to make the argument why Sony is going to dump consoles.

Finding what made each of them great what really matters, everything else is secondary, it's really bad when modern gaming companies failed to capture what made older consoles so great.

People like you ignore the implication of technology evolution.

Its matter of time before everything turns to a cloud service. You can deny it as much as you want, but its going to be here.

Xbox isn't going the Sega route. They've got hardware in the works. Believe it or not.

Ewww.

A lot of us quite like the simplicity of experience offered by consoles. I bought a gaming capable PC a few years ago and, honestly, I almost never used it for gaming. It was easier to just get console games. Like, I get that consoles are limited, but that's a feature, not a bug.

iPhone is already the gaming king, so no need for Apple to compete with themselves. Samsung is already above and beyond Sony and Nintendo for gaming mindshare, so they're ruled out of making an old fashioned set top box. I think Panasonic could emerge from the shadows with a 4DO that would blow everyone's mind. Or, Fromsoft could slap some branding and proprietary OS software on a screenless gaming laptop. I'd buy it day 1 tbqh.

I don't think consoles are going anywhere, but I also don't think another company will make one. The most likely candidate is Valve with a Steam console, not like the stupid Steam Machines they did, but like one they design and make and sell.

Let's be real here, if Microsoft wasn't Microsoft, they wouldn't have made a console after the first one. They've never been particularly successful or good at it. They should focus on software. They were good at gaming in the 1990s before they released Xbox.

I am going to deny…because there is literally no fucking evidence that anyone has any interest in moving to cloud gaming…again this is a crock of shit that people just say without giving one second of logistical thought to how such a thing would have to happen. No talk of energy costs associated with machines being powerful enough to run that many games which requires many orders of magnitude of processing power beyond movie streaming.

There's a lot of really good unused IP out there. Anyone with a little money could make a new console and make huge bank on them.

You don't even need to be the size of Nintendo to do it.

This sony trying to enhance their PS plus cloud streaming

20 years ago, none of this would have been possible. But here we are now with crazy tech. From old tv needing antenna and cable networks to smart tvs that operate through the internet.

We are so far away from that point in the US as too many people live in rural settings that could never use a cloud service

Optional yes but forced cloud?

No way

Non Nintendo consoles haven't been "novel" for the past 40 years- it's the same concept of playing games in front of a TV by yourself or with other people- they've not reinvented the wheel since the fucking Sega Genesis.

If anybody new comes in it's either Meta or Valve, probably both. And I'm fine with that because both of those companies shake things up. Xbox was never really that necessary as a console brand as the years went on because there's no need for another powerful console that plays big gigantic AAA games

Those people arently really the primary target for console owners. Because every game require internet these days, so you need a good one to actually play online games.

5-10 years from now isnt going to be the same as now. We are currently working with fiber optic for faster internet. That would soon spread around the world making the internet faster.

I would love to see Warner Brothers or Disney make a console with Looney Tunes / Donald Duck / Simpson type games.

I would be there day one. What we don't need is more generic shooter or wrpg games repeated ad nauseam.
