Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

No thanks

Their used stuff now is always in such terrible condition. Also, I imagine that the majority of the things they'll sell will not have cases/boxes/etc., so just loose. Will they actually be testing this stuff thoroughly before selling it? For old cartridge based games, will they be verifying authenticity (there are a lot of fakes on the market now) or swapping out aging CMOS save batteries? Are they going to resurface (i.e. "more quickly degrade") the CD and DVD based games to make them playable?

Honestly, GameStop is the last company I would trust to do any of these things correctly.

They are trying to compete with the mom and pop shops. They will sell over priced used games with annoying yellow stickers that don't come off and that are missing game manuals, no thanks

I like the idea on paper, but I don't trust gamestop to execute it properly. It reeks of desperation from a company that's failing. Oh wait.....

I like it in concept, but we'll have to see how the practice is. Because it's big, corporate, and Gamestop, you have to expect there won't be any love put into it, but I like the idea of retro gaming stores a lot. It'd be awesome if they set up some play areas and turn it more into a hangout, but they would never (probably mostly due to liability reasons).

Long time ago someone said retro game stores didn't stock new games as to coexist with Gamestop in the market. Might even have been a guy I talked to in one.

Hah jokes on you local store! Gamestop ain't coexisting with SHIT!

How are these stores gonna be able to be properly stocked? I haven't been into a Gamestop in over a year but everytime I went into my local ones (there's 3 within like 15 miles of me), the stores were so low stocked of current-gen stuff. Half the store was garbage toy shit and funkos. One of the stores had a "retro" section that consisted of like 10 games from GBA/SNES/N64/GC. They just planning on buying shit on ebay and marking it up 3x?

I just looked into this a little deeper, apparently they're just adding "retro sections" to existing GameStop stores, and calling them "retro stores". Not every "retro store" will have all the types of games listed above. The same shit staff you know and hate will be happy to assist you with buying your non-working Saturn games that they have no way of testing.

Very hard pass

I won't lie if it was priced well and in good condition I would go snatch up a Saturn since I never owned one.

The difficult part is cables and what the hell can I even hook it up to in order to play it?

I'm lucky enough to have a locally owned, independent video game store close by.

yeah i have this place in my neighborhood and it rules. owner is cool as hell. they have a crazy selection and decent prices. and they have a big fat dog that walks around and gets petted all day. i should really frequent it more because i think it's such a cool business but i just don't buy much physical media these days.

It would be a good idea if they didn't sell such crappy used stuff. I'll just stick with my local retro shops.

Thing is a lot of places don't have any retro shops. I live in a suburb close to DC and closest one is line 30 min to an hour away, depending on traffic.

I got 2 GameStops within 15 min drive.

You've trained us for decades to know that your used products are in terrible condition, and now you think you can fool retro gamers who are about 100x more discerning?

By all means, try it.

The reason I avoid these stores not wanting to spend money. I can't walk in one without buying something. Last time I walked in I got a 1988 Nintendo Power with TMNT on the cover. There will always be something that just short-circuits my brain.

I mean I would hope they realize they they can't just keep selling used games without cases for market price… right?

I am hoping the move indicates they somebody knows what they are doing.

Gamestop should have a place to park my car. The Mom and Pop near me is on a busy street with zero parking and long walks past a BBQ place that I just HAVE to stop in and get a Brisket sammich.

It's just gonna be full of overpriced crap preying on nostalgia.
when gamestop did this last time, their prices were actually below ebay for most games, especially rare game, will it be like that this time? we'll see

At least it will give people a reason to go to the store, so long as the prices are fair and there is a decent selection. I don't see them remaining a public company for much longer though. Bankruptcy or private buyout is more likely to happen.

I stopped going to GameStop when I brought them like 500 dollars worth of video game stuff and they wanted to give me like 15 bucks. I got mostly what I expected to receive by selling online instead. I know they have to make money on the things they buy, but their offers were always so ridiculously low.

100% agree. I've used shopgoodwill.com for years and even they are more reliable than the dredges that EB (babages/software etc/gamestop/whatever) used to have in their stores.

No stores within 100 miles of me, I want to see it when history repeats itself and they are sitting on 100+ copies of every old Madden and sports game cause people aren't trading in the quality stuff once they buy it up from them and they get rid of retro trades cause all these stores will be sports game warehouses.

Almost positive Gamestop used to be Funcoland around here.
Funco was all about NES and Genesis and stuff.

No clue what suckers are gonna trade their stuff in to these shops.
Could make 10x as much selling online yourself.

I agree. They always give you ridiculously low offers. Unless its new consoles your trading in. For example, I listed an Xbox Series S for sale on Offer Up. Got offers for $120. Went to GameStop and got a trade in offer of $240. Not bad considering i got the Xbox for free as a gift.

I mean, just cause I love Retro games, doesn't mean I wish to over spend at Gamestop to get em lol

Their same issues will remain if they do not change their structure

It's a great idea imo. Old physical gaming should be supported. I can definitely see it as a tool for finding classic games and accessories that work with some degree of support.

I like it.

Smart move by them I reckon. I mean they are a physical games store ... might as well sell games which people can only buy physically (for the most part).

They don't do a good job of catching overseas versions of games, let alone fakes.

Then when you have stuff like Wii U games, that can look immaculate and still not work, I just don't really see it working.

Also if you want to have some shits and giggles, go look at their pricing for "retro" stuff on their website. They're asking full MSRP, despite it likely being fake and/or not working.

Also this is the same store that threw out video game boxes and manuals.
