Life is Strange: Double Exposure |OT| Two girls, one cop

Had to bookmark this thread just so I can save this gif later on pc.

Please don't tell me this is like True Colors (which I liked) where the first episode is a good three hours and then the following four are only an hour long each.

But loving what i'm hearing so far. The first Life Is Strange is one of my fave games of the past 10 years and I loved Max as a character. Never did I expect a return for her.

Playing through Chapter 3 now, and without getting into spoilers, this game has a significant issue with character motivation. Not just stemming from what I mentioned in the earlier Double Exposure thread, but it's far too often now that characters behave in ways that are odd or lack justification. Characters who suspect Max for no good reason/requisite build up, how passively certain characters will react to Max confronting them with personal details she shouldn't know, a particularly egregious scene where a character turns on Max for no good reason at all. I could reach to theorize a potential reason for this.. oddity, but the likely truth is the writers needed to make everyone react in a way that moves that plot along regardless of a scenes believability.

Is this ruining the story for me? No it isn't, but it's not an ignorable issue either. There were a few niggling moments of odd motivation in chapter 1 & 2, but chapter 3 is just in your face with scenes that genuinely required rewrites. There's still plenty of good moments and the overarching mystery is still very interesting, but the quality of the game did take a substantial hit with chapter 3 IMO. We'll see how things progress from here.

Chapter two took me another 3+ hours, already at nearly 7 hours now, though I was admittedly stuck longer on the "safe" puzzle than was needed.
Good stuff in chapter two, much stronger than the first chapter, especially strong ending to get stuck deep in the mystery.
I'll continue this tomorrow

100% agree with the part you spoilered, that was such an odd reaction and stance from the character.

So, it turns out there is a reason for this. I'm not sure it covers all of the weird behavior I was thinking of (I'll have to replay the chapter), but the instance that annoyed me the most turns out to be justified and that's great. Fair play to the writers at Deck Nine.

Just finished the first chapter. I'm still a bit reserved.

There is a lot of good there, but I am also seeing a lot of 'let's use the most successful LiS IP to feel safe shoehorning as much modern shite in there to prove it doesn't turn players off'

I really like the new cast so far. Moses seems a little cliche but Max seems largely intact which is great. A little bit more dorky of course. Sometimes it feels like the scenes kind of end abruptly or we're just transported to the next 'event' - I can't remember if the original LiS was as bad for this or a little better paced/transitioned. I don't remember it being an issue but this was a breakout hit so I may have been more forgiving at the time - genuinely can't remember.

I don't think there is a photo mode either which is bizarre given Max's job and the effort in the scenery. I'm already hooked on the hellraiser cube arc.

Not a fan of the social media wall and there are some technical pop in issues on quality mode.

Thankfully, most of the asinine stuff is in notes, or examining everything but if you do examine everything it gets a bit tiring. Then you have the whole acab attitude to campus security.

Having said that I'm reasonably happy with tie first chapter and onto the second

Chapter 3 was really good, once again around 3 hours, seems this is gonna be a 15+ hour game.
A lot of focus on the powers and mystery and once again a very strong ending, so all good now, hope it sticks the landing.

This is also the chapter where the romance gets going
J3TbrlO.jpeg

In the first game I played Max as straight but even there I stayed away from going through with any romance, because I just wanted it to focus on the story and powers, so I took a similar approach here, no romance to muddy any choices, I do like how the journal entry kinda reflects that; though they do make it difficult not to go for either of them, both characters dial their charm up to eleven, so it really seems like your nudged into picking.
If loretta was an option, I'd probably have Max go with her though.

Edit: also I felt the game was being a bit too hand holdy, so with all the accessibility options I was wondering if there was one to make Max shut up, and there is, you can turn off hints or have them "less frequent"; I've turned them off.

I like how much of a falling out Pricefield had in the Bae ending. Quite effective and logical conclusion to their relationship considering she chose to pretty much let the whole town get obliterated. The whole Chloe never looked at Max the same way after her mother died was spot on. No fairy tale ending bullshit here.

Other than that the new cast is ehh. Safi and her mom are the best. Moses is ok. I also really dislike the game pushes you immediately into the romance with Amanda whatshername. Not happening.

Came in the mail today.

Can't wait to solidify Bay -> Bae ending.

Chloe was a bad influence on Max.

Yeah that pissed me off too. And for the next 20 mins it's like Amanda is so cool, omg she is so charitable. That 'eat you under the table' line was a bit forced too.

That Gwen character immediately makes you think trans when she speaks and lo and behold: https://www.out.com/print/2020/8/25/how-trans-actress-becoming-breakout-star-second-time

Self inserts are getting worse:

Also everyone on that crosstalk app is in a gay relationship pretty much, and pushing apps like tugg'd which is obvs meant to be grindr.

Anyway, that shit out the way, just finished chapter 2 and this is getting interesting now. Good girl Safi - I have doubts.... I'm thinking plagiarism??

Deck nine have done well with the soundtrack at least

Finished the first chapter and I'm about an hour into Chapter 2. It's pretty cool how Max's power works in this game and I like the detective like gameplay that it offers, but I think I'll need to look into disabling that annoying tinnitus-like sound that gets louder every time you reach the points where you switch between realities.

I agree with Cormack about the lack of a photo mode. It seems a bit disappointing that they didn't implement one, considering Max's focus on photography and the game's having great environments/scenery. Plus, I'm sure that a lot of LiS fans would've love sharing their photos, etc. Meh, missed opportunity there.

I already hate that Loretta character for snitching on me to Gwen like a lil bitch she is after calling her bluff. The same goes for Colmenero, where I kind of messed up my choice by not speaking up at Safi's "memorial" (I plan on fixing that in my second playthrough).

I don't think I'll be playing today, but I'll definitely continue my 1st playthrough over the weekend.

I can fix Loretta.

I won't stand for any loretta slander.

The entire game is just super gay, everyone is either gay or bi, straight is the minority here, like even your love interest are either gay or bi lol.
But honestly I don't mind, because nobody is making it their whole personality (so far) , even gwen only has this one line in the living world where it's clearly alluding to trans struggles.

There's something off about the sound mixing in this game, I don't know exactly how to put it. But it feels like the audio lines in conversations are stitched together from completely different recording sessions.

I'm using the Pulse official Sony headset so it's not a matter of having a shitty audio system.

It just feels very weird to listen to people converse with each other in this game.

The facial animations on the girl Max is with in the intro is pretty good tho.

Haven't played yet, but not sure about visual look of Max, like she looks too different from her younger self and kinda, for lack of better word, generic. Graphics looks good overall though.

It's the whole game, like true colors.

Oh... that's...sort of disappointing.

One thing I loved with the first game was playing the game and then talking about what we thought was gonna happen. Then build up hype for the next chapter.

I mean, I can see having all content too...but I really enjoyed that build up between chapters.

Finished chapter 4, honestly thought this was not as strong as chapter 3, it's quite a bit shorter too, only clocking in at 2 hours, it felt a bit like an in-between chapter to get a payoff so we can move towards the climax.
Played the very first bit of chapter 5 as well, nothing too crazy yet, but I hope it gets as wild as the later chapters of the first game.

Huh, looks like this game has come in pretty buggy. There's a bunch of times event triggers aren't happening. I can see the polarizing review scores despite this being a perfectly fine game otherwise.

Finished the game, chapter 5 was short too, a bit under 2 hours, which brings the whole thing to around 14 hours.
it was properly weird though, so a lot stronger than chapter 4, but I still think chapter 2 and 3 are the strongest ones.
The ending (I got) was good too, looks like we MCU now lol
Looks like this whole thing was a setup for the franchise to go xavier vs magneto, and I wonder if the next game will focus on safi or diamond while they look for more people with powers.
The whole "max will return" line I wonder if they'll keep that for DLC or just new games in general, I mean they know how popular she is, and she basically IS life is strange; dontnod fumbled with the second game, but I believe deck nine and SE now know, or at least have a more clear vision on what the franchise is supposed to be.

Looks like I did fix loretta in the end :messenger_sunglasses:

One weird thing though, and this is a spoiler for chapter 5 and the first game:
uJfd4Pk.jpeg
I don't really remember the timeline of events in the first game, but doesn't the above confirm that you save kate? I mean I did so in the first game, but how would this game know that? Did they canonise kate surviving? Or is the square enix account reading my previous choices? But then why even bother with the recap questions in the first chapter? 🤔

So uh I hope the pro brute force the iq in the performance mode for this game. Looks blurry af. And the quality mode is choppy here.

I actually quite like the rendering style of the game. Clearly artistic but the main characters are very well detailed. Also, not all characters get the same treatment, but again, the main characters all have really good facial capture for emoting and dialogues.

I remember liking the first one, but then completely lost track of the developer because the following games looked boring.

This one, judging from the trailer, looks interesting.
They're different, I know the first one is special, especially the time when it launched back in 2013 where everyone shitting on Xbox One and ps4 specs, it was just perfect.

The games budgetary limitations are kinda plain to see. All of it takes place in the same 4 locations.

Also I really don't understand why this couldn't have been a cross-gen game so they could potentially get more money.

I thought that yesterday in chapter 4 which didn't move outside the snapping turtle

Man, I think this game (at least the first playthrough) is going to take me quite a bit of time since I just started Chapter 3 and I've already clocked 8 hours in the game. I've enjoyed all the revelations from Chapter 2, and maybe I was a bit too harsh on Loretta and even on Lucas, lol.

I also wanted to mention that even though Deck 9 was working on a budget for this new LiS title, some of the cutscenes are really impressing me. For example, the Max hero model and the lighting in this scene are chef's kiss. It's a big improvement over True Colors IMO.

You are not ready for where this game is about to go, lol

Haha, I'm looking forward to the next twists in the story. I was actually quite surprised to see the detective, who was just properly introduced in Chapter 2, get killed off so quickly, lol.

The final 2 chapters aren't nearly as long as the first two, so you will probably be done in the next 2, 3 hours.

Also, the final 2 chapters are practically devoid of any 'gameplay' and are just a string of conversations one after another with just movement to reach the next scene point.

The game kinda dropped off in quality for me after the chapter 2 ending twist. Doesn't live up to the premise in a meaningful way, IMO.

Damn, that doesn't sound good. Looks like the devs were rushed. :lollipop_pensive: Thanks for the warning though; I'll now manage my expectations when it comes to the final 2 chapters.

There's a very interesting untouched premise for that police officer plot point, but sadly it doesn't get touched upon at all in the game outside of some text messages with Moses.

Yeah, it does feel like at a point they just wanted to rush to complete the central narrative.

nah, he just started chapter 3, which is as long as chapter 2, which means at least another 4 hours.

Chapter 1 and 2 were the longest for me. 3 was shorter and 4 and 5 are notably shorter, for what it's worth. 5 is basically a very extended cut-scene.

Btw, I was discussing this with someone else, but there's still the Switch version in the pipeline which is supposedly set to release at some point in the future. I'm really curious to see if this release happens, and if so, how it will look and run.

It's still up for pre-order on Square Enix's online store (no product page on the eShop though).
