They need to drop the price of this to 150 and release a 200 dollar OLED model.
If they were able to release something with 120hz and bump up remote play from 60hz and give it VRR, I think that would be a really compelling product too.
Why would they drop the price of Portal when DualSense is $75? Portal isn't a device that a company would sell at a lose to build a user base to sell software, it's meant to make money by being a device that people want to have.
if they lower the price it will be years from now but for now it's selling perfectly fine .
It's not even on-sale but it's been selling above other gaming hardware through the holidays shopping season.

What does a Dual Sense being 75 dollars mean relative to the Portal?
With PS+ subscriptions, you can easily offsets a 50 dollar price cut, not to mention the increased engagement numbers. Not sure why you think they'd be selling it a loss even if they dropped the price.
Once it is out of beta, I wouldn't be surprised if they drop the price and sell a premium OLED model for the previous price.
It will give people a much lower entry price into building a PSN Digital library.
Because there is a whole DualSense Controller connected to a 8" screen & SoC .
This make the money back through PS+ is backwards when people are already buying the Portal at $199 & the money from PS+ subs would not be pure profit so they would be giving up $50 upfront to people who may never use PS+ Premium or drop it after a few months.
Right now there is no reason that Portal should be sold at an lost , if they start selling people cloud versions of games like Switch & they actually sell well then maybe it would make sense to cut the price

In your mind you think Sony breaks even on Dual Sense controllers sold at 75 dollars? They routinely sell them on sale for like 50 dollars... They're making at the VERY least 35 dollars profit per controller sold if not more. They have a huge profit margin on the Portal just like they do on the Dual Sense Edge.
PS+ revenue, particularly PS+ premium revenue is probably the highest margin product sony sells. If even 10 percent of the people who purchase the Portal specifically because of a price drop get PS+ premium, it would easily offset the lost margin on the Portal itself but as I mentioned before also increases engagement on PS as opposed to someone buying a different device.
Anyways, not going to go back and forth with you on this.

I'd love for PS5/PS6 to allow you to connect the Portal as a DualSense and use as a regular controller. With the benefit that games could tap into the controller for a Wii U like experience.
With the increase focus on graphics fidelity, they could uncluttered the screen and drop all the UI elements in the Portal.
Make it optional, but imagine the immersion of playing something like Resident Evil or Silent Hill and not having to pause. It should be a pretty simple conversion, not like VR or anything. And not all games need the feature. But make it optional for the games that want to do that.
This could fulfill the dream of having the Wii U an add-on of the original Wii.
Although the 2-screens should be optional, they should however make it system level that you can just connect the Portal to the PS5 and use that as a controller.

Remote Play app sucks on my phone. It actually has microstutters and frame drops. I changed my router, connected via Ethernet, but it was useless. I can't change my wifi channel to less congested one because fuck tplink for not including channel 42 in their firmware. Also, one of my neighbours congests all the channels I can select which are not DFS channels. And on DFS side things aren't much better as another one congests 50% DFS channels. Also, my signal strenght is too weak -75 dbm unless I sit near my router, then it is ok. I also used wifi 6 on my phone, so PS Portal would be a nightmare on Wifi 5. Right now, remote play is playable, but skips frames, microstutters from time to time.
Even if you upgrade your network you may run into similar problems due to congested channels and signal strenght like me. Try to sort it or if you can't don't even think about buying a PS Portal.

I love the Portal. I don't bother with cloud streaming (I have access to it), but the remote play aspect is fantastic IMO.
I even read that the frame pacing issue was fixed.

It's strange how loud the anger is over game price increases over time, but then somehow basic game controllers creeped into the $70+ range. (And the third-party peripheral market generally died/got locked out, even though with BT/USB we could have a thriving market. Console manufacturers don't want to lose their cut, so instead we have a dormant market where 3rd parties are stuck with generic drivers and unsupported features. )
PS Portal is maybe about right, maybe a little high, for the features it offers but also the features it skipped. If however legitimate competition was allowed (with haptics and proper controller protocols,) that pricepoint would stand out.
(Sorry if this derails the Ultimate Portal Guide thread a bit with a negative post; I like Portal and was wishing for something in this firm factor since Vita or even PSP Remote Play, but I also kind of wish that for $200 the Portal packed just a little more oomph to make it undeniable )

I got a giftcard from work, and put it towards a Portal. Looking forward to superior remote play. I can leave my backbone and phone for Xbox.

I switched internet providers and now cannot get a wired ethernet connection.
Sadly, I get some minor choppiness. Speeds are fast, but soemthing about the latency is not helping. Not sure if there's a setting I need to use to improve things.

I have fiber now. Wifi router is not in my living room though. I have a Wifi extender, which has ethernet port that connects to my PS5, but it still has some mild choppiness and occasionally interruptions regardless of 2G or 5G

Mesh WiFi has the higher speed backbone. Gotta upgrade to something like the Eero Pro's instead of a WiFi extender.

Again, It's a nice little novelty and I would buy it again but... Its Wi-Fi5-only connectivity is a bigger detriment to me compared to the lack of actual Bluetooth connectivity, that, and the fact that I'm actually afraid of the analogue sticks crapping themselves out...
For the time being I'm using my 12.4inch tablet with the dualsense connected directly to the console so...

What do you mean? My PS5 and Portal hook up to the one provided by my cable company. Not sure how a new router would improve things

This thing does a lot more than I initially thought it did, especially with what everyone was saying what it did and didn't do around launch. Depending on future PS5 titles, I could see myself wanting one. 
You can get a router that can be connected to your main network through wifi but connected to your PS5 through Ethernet then you also connect your portal to the router that's connected to your PS5.
A router with wisp mode so basically this router is connected to your Wi-Fi then creating a new Wifi network for your portal & a LAN connection for your PS5 . Now your PS5 is wired to the network that your portal is connected to like it was before you got the new provider.

I have my PS5's wired via ethernet into satellite mesh routers on my WiFi 6e network and ever since I did that I've had a completely solid experience using my Portal at home. Since the PS5 doesn't do downloads or streaming via its wifi adapter any more I completely stopped getting crappy resolution drops and disconnects if a patch or game downloads in the background. It's pretty amazing.

I think im doing that already with an extender that has an Ethernet port connected to my ps5. The extender doubled my speeds to roughly 650 mb/s but I still get a hit of choppiness and interruptions

Yeah should work about the same . Sidenote the Internet speed shouldn't have any affect on your connection between the PS5 & Portal

So now that I was finally able to finish setting up my portal, I was able to play it for the last hour. Zero issues. Works perfectly. 1080p @ 60fps looks great on the device.
Only problem I have is that the sticks don't feel as highlight as the normal dual sense controller.

I've put a few hours into the device now. It's great. Like with normal remote play on the phone and backbone, it just works. I've tested out Resident Evil 5, Silent Hill Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. I run the performance mode on them all, as I don't see a difference with the quality modes.
Is it t worth the he cost? Yes. When you realize the the best "other" option of remote play is a $100 Backbone, it's really a steal.
PlayStation Portal is the ideal way to play a PS5. I'd rather play all the games at 1080p @ 60fps on the Portal than spend $1 million to play them at faux K @ 60fps on the Pro.

It's not lol & I'm pretty sure I had this conversation with you before, I have a 12" tablet on a kiosk that I can take anywhere & use with my DS but Portal is better .

Played a ton on my portal today. Fantastic.
Tomorrow is the real test though. How it works connecting to my phone to remote play. I typically get 700+ Mbps down and 100+ Mbps up on my phone when at work via cellular.

I had this happen to me a few days before the pre-order for the Midnight Black Portal went live.
700+ hours without any issues and suddenly the right stick just stopped over the verticle axis.
So rn waiting til next week for my Portal to arrive. Kinda sucks as now my gametime is more limited and hopefully they improved on the issue.
Might send my original Portal to Sony at a later date, then I'll have 2 Portals for the price of 2.5, I suppose.

Thanks to NeoGaf, I was able to snag the 30th Anniversary Edition. And let me tell you, it's been a blast!
I am honestly shocked how 1:1 the games are with the inputs and graphics. TV may cry.
The only game that I couldn't play well was the original DOOM 2016 for some reason, but I'm sure there is some option to fix that in the game.
Everything else has been perfect!
