Gothic 1 Remake demo is now available on Steam

God, this takes me back to pc gaming. (yes, I used to have a pc). I really loved playing this game. Got to the point of meeting the 3 factions and having to decide on choosing. Unfortunately, I didn't go back to it at the time. Maybe a console port could reintroduce me to it.

Cool stuff. Still have to play the originals tho so I'll hold on the remake until I've done so.

First game at least runs great on the Deck, and the game ended up getting controller support which makes the combat more bearable.

Going to give this a try tonight for sure.

Hopefully they've kept things faithful to the original.

Cool. People who play the demo, let us know what you think. I'm not on PC but am curious about how it plays. I'm familiar with the Risen games but never played a Gothic, though I've heard good things.

Been forever since I played a game in the series, so most of it will be fresh because I forget nearly everything besides the quest design I remember being interesting.

Love demos becoming more of a thing again, and always smart to do when it comes to remakes.

Tried it on Steam Deck and on low settings could barely hit 30fps. Lowered the resolution 800x500 and it hit 40fps but as I'm sure you can imagine, looked like dog shit unsurprisingly.

The game itself actually seems good though, will give it a go on my desktop later to see how it is.

I liked it. Demo lasts about 30-45 minutes, depending how much stuff you will do. People may rightfully have some issues with combat and animations as they're very clunky, I also had some minor issues with equipping weapons while playing on a controller. But overall I feel devs did a relatively good job at giving a small slice of the game and using it to showcase all of the basic mechanics while still remaining faithful to Gothic 1 experience (no handholding, general freedom in exploration, having to be very careful in combat, secrets if you stray from a main path) and giving a general feel of what they want to do with this remake

It worked decently on my few years old PC. The area is similar to what they had in that old playable teaser released a few years back (Exchange Zone and path towards Old Camp), but this time around its design is much more faithful to the original game. There are some little stuff hidden in every corner, like extra consumables, weapons and even missable side quests. They did added some areas here and there, but these feel more like an extension of the original designs over inserting completely new areas. And they also utilised these NPCs quite well, using them to deliver some basic tidbits about lore and the Colony

In general it's shaping up to be a very janky game, so it's worth to keep this in mind before playing

I had a lot of fun with the demo, but I also had a lot of trouble with the weapon equipment and item pickup. Sometimes the gamepad controls would not work at all and I would have to restart the game to get them to work.

It's also very demanding game. On RTX4080S I had about 30-35fps at 4K (100% resolution scale), but lowering resolution scale to 67% made it playable (60-70fps). At 1440p I had about 80fps with 100% resolution scale.

It was great and they really did capture all the stuff I love about Gothic. Visuals are great, performance mostly above 60 on a 4070 (occasional stuttering aside). It really filled me with hope for the final product.

Yeah, an awful prototype demo. They have come a long way since that one.
Probably not a good idea to release that because the minute I read the thread title my opinion of it was in the gutter from messing with that thing. I'll certainly check out the improvements, but yeah, keep that one to yourselves guys.

Couldnt really play the demo properly as you cant invert the controls (in this demo obviously, i'm sure you will be able to in the full game). So i just messed around for a bit.
The graphics are pretty damn good, but its very heavy. I was getting 50-60 fps at 1080p 'Gothic' settings, on my 3070.

Hopefuly optimization is a little better on the finished game.

I will definitely be buying this. It's beautiful and no quest markers is *chef's kiss*. No pause though, I hope this is for the demo only.

Thanks for the heads up. I was surprised to learn about this remake and now a demo already. Feels def nostalgic.

Just tried it...

Dialogue and animation quality is laughably bad for 2025. Picking up anything might be one of the worst solutions that I've seen. Looks way too amateurish. I can't play this...

Any interesting demo out there?

There's quite a few that look interesting including a Chernobylite 2 that I wasn't expecting. A couple ARPGs that looked promising, and even an action adventure looking one where you're riding a dragon.

If I was home I'd get on and rattle off a few names for you, but I definitely recommend givingit a look.

God Goth, this takes me back to pc gaming. (yes, I used to have a pc). I really loved playing this game. Got to the point of meeting the 3 factions and having to decide on choosing. Unfortunately, I didn't go back to it at the time. Maybe a console port could reintroduce me to it.
Fixed it for you.
