Doom 2016 - how the feck is this game so good?

I'm on my 5th playthrough of Doom 2016 (I've replayed this game every year since owning it). Currently playing the game on Nightmare.

I'm almost at disbelief how good this game is. Everything is perfect.

The overall presentation of the game, the level design, the environmental variety, the graphics (to be honest I'm shocked at how good the visuals look - whilst the textures and assets are somewhat dated, it still looks amazing on my OLED), the music, and most importantly, the gameplay.

This game feels so fun to play, and I can never get bored despite playing it over and over again. I've clocked 70 hours on Steam thus far, and I don't see myself stopping.

Genuinely one of the all time greatest FPS campaigns to ever grace us.

Not my video but a great montage all the same:

I gave it multiple tries, but I just couldn't get into it. I found it a bit boring.

Looks and plays great though

I love Doom but compared to Eternal, it was boring. It's too slow and brain dead. People didn't like the sequel because they didn't like the fast paced challenge. I enjoyed Doom 2016 for what it was, the gameplay loop is fun but I have also gone back to playing it recently and it's just like, where is the challenge, I got bored so quick.

The gameplay in Eternal is better (except the poor ammo economy). Enemy encounters and variety are way more interesting, and it's pretty awesome to challenge Baron of Hells, Doom Hunters and Tyrants all at the same time.

Everything else in 2016 is better.

So funny I JUST finished it yesterday. So so good. I jumped into Eternal and it's like whiplash; so many new mechanics thrown in within 2 hours it's a lot, and a lot less fun.

I like a lot about it but I could never get into how it looks. It's kind of drab and boring looking and then hell veers too far into cartoon-ish designs for me. I just never thought it looked Doom enough. I always read a certain grimy, rusty HR Giger look into the original games. Returnal's Derelict Citadel stage is closer to what I expected of a modern Doom visually and atmosphere wise.

It's a really fun game though and I've beaten it several times now.

I wish I could get into it. I've tried several times. Something about it makes me feel bad. It's not exactly motion sickness, I don't think, though that has been an issue with a few games for me.

I just get a weird feeling and the combat feels bad, though I don't know why. I've gotten 3 or 4 hours in several times before shelving it - something I almost never do with a game, even ones I don't like.

Best late title card.

Gives me chills every time. This whole monologue is fucking sick. It's just so sinister and clinical, devoid of any humanity. Perfect writing, perfect voice acting.

Also how the camera pans to the dead body when he says "it's for the betterment of mankind", absolute cinema.

Special shoutout to the voice actor of Hayden, Darin de Paul, and the audio design.

Amazing line delivery and the voice effects are top notch too.

It's a very good game. I see the appeal, but I don't think it's that incredible, it just doesn't screw up at delivering a regular ass FPS. I beat it, waited eagerly for the sequel, then gave Doom a break after playing it a few hours.

I'll be back for Dark Ages.

Because 2016 was just a perfect pure shooter

Have gun, kill demon

Unlike whatever the fuck Eternal was sigh

I hope The Dark Ages goes back to what made 2016 so good
The fact that they added more complexity to enemy weak points and you really had to move around the arena style maps is what made Eternal so much better. Resource economy and platforming was subjective yes, I liked it, a lot of people didn't. But people seem to not understand the difference between a standard FPS and an Arena FPS and Eternal nailed it perfectly in that respect. Dark Ages is going to be a bit slower, but they are aiming for x-axis gameplay. This is what the old school Dooms were, moving and dodging on a horizontal level. I still think they will keep the mechanic of needing to use certain weapons to nail some enemies. Otherwise it will just become a brain dead gameplay loop again. There is like no challenge in Doom 2016, its fun but once you played it once or twice, it's boring! You don't get that with Eternal IMO.

It's a good game but I'd rather play the original Painkiller, Serious Sam or even the Shadow Warrior reboot
Second Encounter is so fucking good man. Might have to give it a replay soon.

It's really good, and they did a great job with those HD remasters back in the day.

Arena style FPS were a thing 20 years before Doom 2016 but a lot of people have never played a single one of them because most of them were in PC, not in consoles.

You should also try Dusk. It's a retro styled boomer shooter, but the movement mechanics and satisfying weapons are similar to Doom 2016.

Probably an unpopular opinion, but I really enjoyed the multiplayer. Arena based that brought back memories of Quake, but relaxing enough so you could have some mindless fun. Some builds like dual shotguns were such a laugh.

i didn't like this game at all. the glory kills slowed down the pace the levels were small and linear and there weren't that many enimes to fight at once. you couldn't just shoot to kill demons half the time you had to do those stupid glory kills. I am glad doom dark ages looks to fix these problems.

Pretty sure, as you leveled up glory kills got faster.

The music is what REALLY hooked me in 2016, the rest is awesome too but DAMN Mick Gordon went hard.

For anyone else that loved the music and likes nerdy shit this is a great watch (its an hour long breakdown of how he got the sound)

Doom 2016 was a very unlikely game. it was unlikely to revive the franchise, it was unlikely to fulfill expectations, and it was unlikely to succeed in the market at the time... but it did all of that.

also RIP TotalBiscuit, his first contact with the game says it all, and sold me on it:
