Baldur’s Gate 3 director says single player games are not “dead”, they just “have to be good”

I mean what he's saying sounds sensible, but you also have to admit there's some survivor bias going on there.
This post is hilarious not just for the picture, but also for the fact that Larian themselves almost went bankrupt multiple times and only became financially successful and independent some 17 years after it was founded, with first Divinity OS. Swen knows that just making good games is not enough to be successful, but it is the most basic prerequisite. And many companies are failing even at that!

Damn he really did it didn't he. He ended bad single player games. Waiting for President Trump to announce the victory.

A game has to be good to sell well? Nah, not true. Many good to great games fail regularly unfortunately. Didn’t everyone love that Banishers game? Heard it didn’t sell too well.

Shame too, some of those early games were great IMO. I love Divine Divinity, wish I had played it when it came out, but I loved it when I played it a year or two ago. Or whenever I played it.

Returnal didn't sell like it was acclaimed. As for it being fine internally at the studio or not, sure, Sony can be happy for the "indie" idea. Compared to the GAAS bleeding money, they probably saw Housemarque as a drop of water in the ocean comparatively. This game was also bundled so reported numbers are quite pathetic all things said.
Eh, latest reported (leaked) numbers are from 2023, and (regional) bundles started in 2024. Unless you meant forced bundles? I believe Miles Morales was the go-to choice at the time.

Also BG3’s success shows that current modern gamers are not afraid of deep rpg mechanics and love a series that hasn’t seen a new entry in 25 years (even on consoles).

Luckily the atrocity that was the 2021 Dark Alliance game dropped the Baldur's Gate branding, or that really could've soured people on the franchise :messenger_grinning_smiling:

Hey I like those games, but they were Diablo like games set in the D&D universe but definitely not a D&D game. On their own they were pretty decent and had amazing graphics as far as the PS2 goes. Pretty decent critical and user reviews too. Although I could definitely understand why Balder’s Gate fans would be disappointed.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
is it though?

Are all great SP games guaranteed to sell? i dont think so.

Swen needs to wind his neck in, he got lucky the zeitgeist picked this game up and was blasted all over the place with the bear shagging shit, and the popularity of the license. A perfect storm.

His company has made many decent to great games and as a studio it's spent most of that time on its arse shambling from one project to the next.
