Hugo reacts to: "Sliders in DOOM = Too Easy?"

btw I pre-ordered like the drooling retard I am.

People shit their pants over the stupidest shit these days. "This isn't my DOOM, wah it's got options"

DOOM had two games 30 years ago. Play with arrow keys you want to typical DOOM experience in 1993.

Even before the original Doom they had difficulty levels. Now it's just more granular which is objectively a good thing.
That menu is highly problematic. Report to gulag for reeducation, comrade, and please refer to this academic think-piece:

This guy had to go on a personal spirit quest to put a game on easy. Imagine the fucking existential crisis he'll have trying to decode the nuance of a dozen separate difficulty sliders.

They should pop a steam friend notification every time you lower your difficulty.

Classic doom is a schmup?

Yeah fuck NU-DOOM
These devs are utter clueless.

Doom 2016 was kickass should have stopped

You dont think classic doom was a shoot em up in first person?

I think the sliders are stupid.

Just create a well balanced game on all difficulties.

If someone finds it hard, then play the easiest difficulty.
If someone wants a challenge, then play it on nightmare.

Now that's a game! 💪

If this new Doom is nothing like Eternal and more like 2016 at the very least.. i'll bite. Here's hoping.
It won't be like either, considering how Hugo has gone on record of saying how they don't want to make the same game twice. TDA will be its own thing.

They literally have that. It changes the sliders for you based on what difficulty you choose.

At first, I wasn't a fan of these sliders, but after thinking about it, I realized they have a bright side. It's not about the difficulty, it's about adding a lot of replayability to the game!
I finished Doom Eternal on Ultra-Violence and Nightmare, and that was it. But with these sliders, I can imagine myself playing in different ways, making each playthrough feel fresh and unique.
Can't wait to try it out in May

Google is fucking trash. If you search for boob slider with safe search off, you get every explicit picture ever made, but nothing showing a boob slider in a video game. What the fuck, man.

This doesnt take away your ability to play on:
  • Im too young to die
  • Hurt me plenty
  • Ultra-Violence
  • Nightmare.

But instead of hiding mods behind a cheat menu or console commands you can now customize how the game plays.
They are just exposing those parameters to you from the jump.
Giving console gamers the chance to mod their gameplay is an absolute win.

I like this idea a lot. Total War Warhammer III added some very general sliders recently but it is a trend I would like to see continue. I've had an idea for awhile that if you beat a game, instead of unlocking some costume, etc., you should be able to mess with some kind of "slider" of some form. Plus this allows you to balance a game to your own liking somewhat.

When you tune a game for no one, it ends up being for no one. Have some backbone Hugo. Can't believe we're going from Eternal to this. Hope they accidentally make it good.

Now try looking up the PS1 game called "One".

But it is tuned the same a before. They have just exposed the sub difficulty parameters. If you look at the video you can see they still have the preset easy medium hard options which almost certaintly the games been balanced for.

I don't mind it there were already difficulty settings to begin with. Def can see people turning down or is it up the marauder vulnerability window lol.

I actually agree with the concern of difficulty sliders opening up the door for a less refined experience, but that was a *really* good answer. The idea he mentioned of having slower, more lethal projectiles does sound quite interesting as well.

No. Fuck that. I'm gonna whine about this.

Sliders suck. I don't want to build my own arbitrary difficulty. I want to be able to say "I beat the game on medium" or "I beat the game on hard." I want every difficulty setting to be carefully curated by professional game designers.

And no, it's not good enough for me that there are also presets, because the existence of the sliders dramatically reduces the designers' incentive to perfect the presets. Why put in the time to make sure "easy" and "medium" and "hard" feel just right, with just the right balance of different elements, when the sliders are right there as a game design crutch? Is the publisher really going to want to spend all that time and money on polishing during crunch when they can just rely on those sliders to do the work for them? No doubt they'll spend some time tweaking the various difficulty settings, but given the incentives involved, they're going to spend less time on it. They're going to settle for less perfection, less precision.

If I walk into an expensive restaurant, I do not want the chef to ask me exactly what kind of spices I want, and exactly what kind of marinade I want, and exactly how he should cook it, and what I should pair it with. Bitch, that's what I'm paying you for! And if the restaurant has a few half-assed premade options they threw out there for people like me, but they really just want me to design my own damn meal, that's no good either. Not if I'm paying $70.

The "tuned" difficulties arent going away.
If you want to play on the standard difficulties then go for it.
If you want to use modifiers (something thats been in FPS games forever we seemingly just forgot) then you can add modifiers to the game to change the gameplay.

So there is difficulty presets like in the former games. So why the fuck people are complaining ?
Oh, you haven't met any people before? They're generally quite awful.

Doctors: "We've cured cancer!"
People: "Big oooof - gonna bankrupt the medical industry."
People: "This spits in the face of everyone who died from cancer in the past."
People: "Well, I for one won't be injecting this POISON into my cancer-ridden child."

Should a cheat menu disable achievements?

I'm sure they will have pre-tuned difficulties per usual. But this adds quite a bit of replayability which is great for a primarily single player game.

"We don't know how to balance the game so we'll make you balance it instead"
I understand some people like even more options but there is reason to expect devs to provide balanced and fun presets or a single well polished vision.

What is next Epic saying that Unreal 3 is coming, you just need to download the Unreal editor and dev tools and modify the FPS preset? Is a copy of Visual Studio a PC game just with a lot of sliders and customisation options for players ;)?

Abaslutley bizarre how anybody can make an issue out of this, if you don't want the game to be easy play it on a harder difficulty ffs, that's literally what difficulty settings are there for

I personally don't care to spend 3 hours tweaking sliders and testing over and over, but as long as there's the usual difficulty options with the sliders where they should be from the devs, I'm all for having options for those that like that kind of customization.
