You don't remember Ghost of Tsushima being labelled as propagandist material for imperial Japan....
The point being is that all you are seeing is the exact same counter-reaction to what came before. It may be silly to get upset at an optional relationship choice, but that doesn't mean it just came out of nowhere purely because orange man is president which I assume is the underlying sentiment.

In ACS case specifically, the hatred build up has been more of a slow burn (thats the case for me anyways). I still remember when they had announced that they'll never be an assassin's creed in Japan, disappointing millions of fans across the world at the height on AC's popularity. Then when they saw the tremendous success of Tsushima they quickly changed their word for that cash cow.
But instead of copying an already established formula (The only thing that Ubi are good at), they deliberately chose a controversial protagonist to take a political stance; if you don't agree with this you're either being intellectually dishonest or its beyond your cognitive abilities.
I'm not Japanese and I don't put them on a pedestal like some people seem to do, but it was a right (yes, I know what I said) of the Japanese people/Japan lovers to get a protagonist from the same country as the setting, just like every previous title has had. It stinks and I empathize because I know I'd feel a way about it too if they were to do the same thing for my country/setting.
Also Ubi don't help themselves by being hyper incompetent and inconsistent in their marketing and research, not to mention their bad monetization practices and tendency to get mixed into scandals has eroded any sympathy or goodwill many had for them.
So yes, I for one see them as a laughing stock, I'm not buying another assassin's creed game for like atleast a decade (After having bought every installment except Valhalla and Liberation), and I think their downfall is well deserved and ultimately a good thing for the industry.

In the grand scheme of things, a same sex romance in an Assassin's Creed game is a stupid thing to get upset about, but if you pull the camera back and see the bigger picture of what's been going on, it's clear as day why it's happening. Like it or not, this is the result of a thousand cuts over the last 10-15 years and eventually people get fed up.
In a sane world this would simmer down and we'd go back to normal, but the world isn't sane and the people who started this shit are only getting worse. Let's make it simple. If games were developed to appeal to the vast majority of their audience, every protagonist would be a white man, and every love interest in those games would be an attractive woman with giant tits.
The widespread push to appeal to anyone but this demographic is social justice.
That's not to say I couldn't enjoy a game with a black or female lead. Tomb Raider is the perfect example. But watch the last Summer Game Fest and do a tally of how many games the above applies to, versus the opposite. You can add South of Midnight to the tally for against.

Honestly, mad isnt the word, but yes. I just dont think it's necessary, but i feel that way about romance in games in general. 95% of the time it adds nothing to the game and is implemented awkwardly.
But anyways, i've been misquoted enough in this thread by many. Ive never once said i was mad, or never once tried to tell anyone not to buy this game or any game for any reason. Just was throwing my opinion into the fold like everyone else does. Also my sense of humor is sometimes interpreted as me attacking others, but im really not. People should buy what they want and at the end of the day dollars speak volumes. It did with Concord, it did with Veilguard, and i feel it will with this also.

Well it's an RPG. It's optional. You don't need to engage with any of it.
But the option is there, because it's an rpg and they offer options.
Options are good.
