Fountain of Youth - Guy Richie Apple TV+ movie Staring John Krasinski, Natalie Portman

it feels like "someone wants to do an Indiana Jones and Lara Croft team up but don't want to pay for the rights" sorta vibe. but in all seriousness, it looks kinda interesting. I'm down for it.

I like the idea but man the annoying "quippy dialog" feels so bad here, zero charm unlike some of Ritchie's other stuff.

They should stop giving big blockbuster projects to Guy Richie and tell him to fuck off back to England and make more movies like Lock Stock, Snatch and The Gentlemen.

Anyway, 11 year old kids are gonna love this movie, and it seems aimed at that kind of audience.

Man I don't care that it's aping Indy, if it's a good adventure film I'm down. Halpert makes a surprisingly good Indy, too. I just hope it's not too Guardians-quippy, though.

I'll give this a watch for sure.

I thought The Covenant was pretty great but yeah he's had some stinkers lately.

Definitely think any sort of big budget seems like a huge risk to the studio though. Love to see more stuff like Wrath of Man.

Him toned down a bit like in The Gentleman is preferred over trying to recreate his Lock Stock / Snatch vibes too. You listed them all together but his old stuff which I was a big fan of back in the day is pretty over the top obnoxious.

I wish Richie would just stick to making Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels/Snatch-like British gangster movies. I can't get enough of that shit. It's like, dude, that's what you do best and I love it.

When is Vinnie Jones gonna show up?

Anyway, that feels as smoothed over and "by committee" a trailer as humanly possible. Zero rough edges, sanded smooth, no personality possible. Eiza Gonzales is perfect for this, she has zero facial movement. John Krasinzski and Zachary Levi need to do a movie together, they are damn near indistinguishable when separate.

This and he needs to get Fairbrass to start appearing in his stuff

So, anyone else looking forward to this flick? Its out tomorrow and with it being directed by the amazing Guy Ritchie and starring the equally amazing John Krasinski you'd think it has a really good shot at being pretty fucking decent… then why have Apple got a review embargo on it till tomorrow morning!?? Not long too wait but I'm hoping we get something better than the god awful Uncharted movie, we're due a decent globe spannin fun adventure movie, its been soo long

Ritchie will never make the RockNRolla sequel will he?
wife and I watched the Gentlemen & Rock n Rolla back to back a few weekends ago and those are two absolutely brilliant flicks, bith deserve a sequel but yeah Rock n Rolla at the end did say they would return, nobody does double crossing gangsta flicks quite like Ritchie

Movie felt flat overall, like it didn't know what it wanted to be.

Everyone just phoned in performances lol.

Nice effects at the end though.

5/10 but if they tried again, I'll probably watch for dumb fun.

Movie was pretty damn bad. Like if you took National Treasure or Indiana Jones and sucked every ounce of charm out of it. Everyone phoned it in here.

Apple are pretty good at making TV shows but it seems they are absolutely terrible at making movies. Whoever is running their movies division needs to be replaced.

They have a big budget and a slick look, but they lack a lot of charm and substance.

This is the case with almost every streamer made film. Either they are all making the same choice for DP and cinematographer or there is some odd shift in style for color grading and all that (maybe to make it easier to stream versus project? But since most films are shot or at least projected digitally it doesn't seem to be the couse).. Or, and this is my most likely reason, the directors are mostly just hired on for their name and the production is done as cheaply as possible so there is no time or money for more interesting photography.

I can't figure out why we can't make a movie like Ark of the Covenant, or a kids movie like Goonies anymore. Goonies can't be made because kids can't explore or have freedom to get out anymore it is a foreign concept killed by the parents that grew up on goonies. I think Digital photography has really killed a lot of the look we have in film. It is too perfect. One of the issues that arises with it is best seen in the Hobbit. It makes the film look fake and not grounded like the LOTR trilogy.

Is this one of those made for streaming movies that was 90% shot in front of a green screen and where are all the action scenes look fake because they spent all their budget on the actors and there was nothing left for competent CGI?

CGI is good in the film. It just has no charm or depth or wit.

I saw Hobbit 1 in that 3D HFR, it was TERRRRRRRIIBBBLLLLEEE. Watching the movie now on Max its just excessive CGI and poor creature design that stands out, but in HFR all the sets looked like they were made of cardboard.

Fortunately all the movies I've seen in theater have looked good. M:I8 for example, looks AMAZING with incredible sets. Same with Warfare, Nosferatu, etc. Lilo and Stitch was probably the flattest looking one but Sydney Agudong is an absolute smoke show when they put her in tight wet clothes (that's the older sister, BTW, you sickos), so maybe I just didn't notice :P Thunderbolts as well, muted and flat colors throughout with a lot of that fake lighting look.

F1 looks good. Superman does as well. How to Train your Dragon I'm worried about visually because it does seem to trend that way in the trailers but maybe not. F4 has it though, it looks TERRIBLE in trailers.

Serviceable/worth a watch, but forgettable.
It kept us entertained through dinner but lacks something.

I think I never believed any of the characters goals? Plot points like their fathers obsession or their relationship as siblings didn't feel authentic? I think a lot of those elements are mentioned and too quickly brushed off to give them any real depth. They could have dwelled more on family trauma or something to give them more direction aside from, "You're right, being an adventurer is just fun".

There didn't really feel like any stake to find the treasure and the "ticking clock" reason they give just allows everything to be rushed. But even then, its not used well as a narrative device and just makes the scenes jump all over the place with an over foreshadowed reveal.

The ending is kinda funny. With the supernatural its sometimes best to leave things more ambiguous instead of the full Beauty and the Beast treatment of having you hover in the air with lighting striking. Surely they wouldn't waste the same 4 minutes on an identical over-bloated effect for the next guy? Nope starts right back up again.
