Not your standard war movie by all accounts though. Almost zero plot, just a bunch of soldiers under fire if the reviews are anything to go by. Sound interesting enough and I'll watch anything Garland does.

I actually thought Civil War was decent.

It was good, I went to a screening where Garland did a Q&A which makes it stand out in my mind a little more, perhaps, but I'm surprised that it was pretty big news, good reviews and tickets sales, but rarely referred to now.

Yep - Exactly why im so intruiged. Fuck the wife and kids back home story plot in all these war movies. Just put me in the middle of a battle for 2 hours and direct the hell out of it. Thats what this seems to be.

I can't even begin to describe how sick I am of the family at home. Or backflashes to the wife and husband looking at eachother under the blanket and smiling. Spare me. The worst parts in Godzilla with Aaron Taylor-Johnson were the family. Movies like Alien and The Thing show that you don't need to know about the characters' families and personal lives. Just put great characters in an interesting setting and situation and go from there.

How else to get any significant number of women into the casts of these projects? War is, and will always be, 99% dudes. It's a topic almost exclusively interested in by dudes, its all about dudes, and quite frankly it's insulting to the dudes who went out and did it when they shoehorn in chicks, (especially replacing historic men with women) usually the sniper or something where the dainty little actress doesn't have to actually carry anything.

Clearly there are exceptions for sci-fi/fantasy, but for anything remotely historic or grounded, that's the way it has to be. Sure you can find some isolated examples of women in combat in the real world, but those are so unique they are BY DEFINITION the "example that proves the rule". And if they DO cast women to play combat soldiers, modelled after the real examples, then AT LEAST cast women who know their guns, know their tactics, and have a BODY that reflects rucking, crawling, and fighting.

I almost never watch movies, and haven't been to the theater in years, but this looks really good. If I don't go to see it, I'll definitely watch it at home.
