I'm in - DRM free is always a good thing. I'm a little surprised it took this long for the game to launch on GOG, considering that there's plenty of newer titles that have been on GOG for a while. But... whatever. Happy it's finally there.

well, Doom 64 can be downloaded and then you can copy it to another PC without steam and still play it.
Steam games do not necessarily have any DRM. in theory publishers can release a DRM free version of a game just as much on Steam as they can on GoG. the difference being that on GoG you know for sure and don't need a launcher to initially download it.

In the case of Doom 2016, though, Steam DRM is still applied. But yes, you're right that it's at the publisher's discretion.
