Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 ≼| OT |≽ La Belle Fantaisie

I only did the Lyall one, the draw distance i am not touching for the moment, it may over tax the performance.

It doesn't, she's already 16. In 9 years she'll be 25. And in 9 years they'll be at expedition 24.
It only works out if you subtract it from 34 and might make sense since 34 just ended and we're at the start of 33.

So wait 30 people total working on this game and ND can't make a new game in a decade?

this just shows how truly BLOATED studios and untalented a LARGE percentage of game developers are in the industry

Everyone that is 33 just died so in a year everyone that will be 32 will die...in 9 years everyone who will be 24 so she'd already be dead. Anyways, it doesn't really matter lol

It's honestly really impressive what this studio has accomplished with this game. They're putting a lot of studios to shame.

I was thinking about it a lot earlier too, and just gave up. Might make more sense once we get further into the game I hope.

it doesnt, performance is the same but it seems like people are struggling to find the folder where to put the file. This is why I dont like pc gamepass and I always try to avoid it as much as possible

I was also thinking about what if you were 32 at the festival while the paintress paints 33, everyone who were 33 disappeared but then you turn 33 the day after? Everyone that is older is dead so that doesn't make sense either. I'm reading too much into this

Exactly! I'd imagine they'd just disappear on the spot 🤣

The moment paintress paints a number you have one year left to live. Everybody that disappeared at the beginning was 34, not 33. People aged 33 will die the moment she paints 32.

No, Sophie was 33. Maelle mentionned she was 33 while joking she looked younger than Gustave even though she was older than him

I'm not sure it works like that because Sophie was 33. How old is Gustave? He has a year to live.

Thank you, Sandfall, for making attractive characters.

I think when she paints a number, everyone who's that age or older dies.
But is some wiggle room depending on what date she paints and when your birthday is. Let's say she paints on Jan 1 of every year, if you were born on Dec 31 of 1900, and she paints 20 on Jan 1 of 1921, you would be 20 years and 1 day old, and you die. But someone who was born on Jan 2 of 1901, they would be 19 years and 364 days on Jan 1 of 1921, and they would not die, until she paints 19 on Jan 1 of 1922. So the person born 2 days later gets to live just about a year more.
So trying to deduce exact age of everyone based on when they would die can yield can error up to a year.

Dunno if its just me, but i love the fact that there is no minimap or quest log. I dont need a quest log filled with useless junk. So refreshing. God time to grind this game

May I ask if the game is very based, none of that woke agenda twisted gender ideology binary and pronouns stuffs?
From that list - none.

Lip sync seem a bit off for anyone else or is this just me? Not a lot but it's breaking immersion on some of these dramatic scenes…
Yeah, it's very rough in the prologue dialogues. After that there are mostly cutscenes where it's ok.
But what bothers me most is the UI. It's one of the most unintuitive interfaces I ever seen.

South of the Midnight kills it IMO.
While it's really great, COE33 is the winner for me.

Oh yeah the visual design very much reminds me of Bioshock Infinite but with MUCH better character models.
BIoshock Infinite + Plague Tale.

Thats good to hear. Starting this game shortly.

One thing I like about SoM soundtrack is ebb and flow. Apart from sounding great, it also adapts to whatever is happening in game incredibly well. Almost like a character in itself.

Am I missing something with the plot here?

Don't think this is a spoiler as it's the basic premise of the game.

What if you turn 33 after the day the paintress paints the number? It seems to be only people of that age when she pops up to change the number.

The game seems to indicate that no one is older than 33. Do you just turn to petals and such on your 33rd birthday without the nice fanfare and such if you were unlucky enough to have a birthday in the period after she updates the countdown?

EDIT: Nevermind, I see it's already been discussed.

Just got home from work, took a shit, had a shower, and now I am preparing to jump back into this amazing experience. I was playing the prologue and a bit into Act 1 last night and my wife, who will occasionally really get hooked on a games story, didn't touch Monopoly GO! for two hours. She had to work tonight and said, "It really sucks I got to work, and you're probably going to play that game, and I will be lost Friday night when I get to watch again!" She is a very casual gamer opting for much of her content via mobile, with a bit of Sims 4 on her laptop. I really love when she gets into stories with me. This last happened with Cyberpunk 2077, and Death Stranding before that. Both of those games she was able to watch every minute of the experience. I've been married to this woman for 30 years, and times like these remind me of days long gone, days when we were just learning about each other, days when I wasn't sure what a 20 year year old chick would think about this new dude in her life that likes to sit in front of a TV mashing buttons in his spare time.

The day she paints a number everyone above that age dies. So even if you turned 33 a day later you will still get a year at most.

Anyone know how to unlock the paint cages? Are you supposed to shoot the symbols flying around it or are the 3 keys scattered nearby?

Edit: never mind, I figured it out

Is it ever indicated it's age >= number = petals?

You're probably right as it doesn't make sense otherwise, but seems a bit odd to not add that little caveat in a line of dialogue somewhere. Its only ever "you're 33, so you're dead today once she's paints 33".

I wonder if leap years count.

There are 3 keys in similar visually blurry spots (they are small so can be difficult to see) in the same area as the cage. Shoot all three to unlock your sweets.

The French will tell you if you're ugly. That's at least my experience. And bless 'em for it.
This goes in the opposite direction as well - when MeToo started first there were some replies from French women saying: "TF you are saying a man cannot compliment me for my appearance? You crazy.".

Still on top of the sales chart, my guess this is France only which makes sense given that the devs are French as well.

Decided to go for it and bought it. Played through the prologue and the first 10min of Act 1. It's the first time since a very long time that I'm playing a turn based game. The parry/dodge and free aim system add enough to it to not be boring yet. Also the graphics, art style, characters and music are amazing. If it continues to deliver throughout the game it's an easy GOTY contender and possibly winner.

All this for €45 is impressive.

Dont think so. They doing a really good job with characters. Sophie was already likeable 5 minutes in

The character itself is likeable I agree but the way the poster frames the post makes him sound like an incel, desperate for a girlfriend

In general I always find a bit embarassing when people fall in love with videogame characters and worship them as goddesses

That ultimate weapon toy boss with big shield was fun fight.

I never though dodging and parring be so fun in a turn based combat.

Also characters are charming and very likeable.

I highly recommend downloading this if you're on PC and is bothered by letterboxed 30 fps cutscenes. Makes the cutscenes look so much better. IMO worthy to have in the OP.

There is finally a mod on pc to double the draw distance and it removes the awful popping

and Lyall has released as well a mod to remove the horrible sharpening filter

Man I love modders

These are the engine.ini tweaks in case anyone doesn't want to download that draw distance mod:

[SystemSettings]
r.DFDistanceScale=2
r.ViewDistanceScale=2
foliage.LODDistanceScale=2

That feeling when you enter an optional area, face off against the boss and group counter every single one of it's attacks 💯 I did encounter a mime that's way too tough to take on now though, I steamrolled every other mime (5 of them) up until this point.

I don't know about this too much. This game has a horrible uncanny valley effect. Characters have attractive faces, but they have weirdly tiny bodies (especially arms) in comparison to head size. It's really weird to look at.

You just described attractive French women. I don't even kid, this is the body shape here, together with small breasts.

For those confused about the plot (the aging, really). The game actually sets it straight right at the prologue. This isn't even a spoiler tbh, but I'll put it in tags just in case.

At the festival, Gustave tells Maelle that she still has 9 years to live. This tells us Maelle is 16, and 9 years into the future she'll be 25.
But at the same time, if no one stops her, the Peintresse will have counted down to 24 (33-9). Hence, Maelle will be older than the number on the monolith on the day of the Gommage (which is what they call the day when the Peintresse paints a new number) and she'll disappear.

You can even use this to work out the year everyone else was born if it's stated somewhere. Apparently everyone on the expedition, except Maelle, is 32 (they mention they have only one year left to live), so they were born on 65 (the year on the monolith), while Maelle was born on year 49.
The thing that makes it confusing, I believe, is the monolith. The years go by (and the calendar year increases just as always) but the year on the monolith (which dictates who dies) goes down, hence, only 9 years left to live for Maelle because that's how long it will take for her age and the monolith to catch up.

I'm curious about them, I hope the game explains it at some point. I encountered the first on the first playable area after the prologue and it royally steamrolled me, but it was great fun.

Usually I never buy games at release, but I have to support 30 people developing one of the hottest contenders for GOTY so far and only charging 45€ for it. Last game I bought on release was RDR2 iirc.
