Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 ≼| OT |≽ La Belle Fantaisie

There is but I'd recommend giving it a fair shot before you do that. This is probably the most accessible and engaging turn based RPG I've ever played. It's so fun. The real time aspect to the combat where your learning attack patterns to parry and dodge attacks makes this really engaging, it demands your attention as opposed to just giving commands. The QTEs are endless, but I treat them as mini games because the timings are always different depending on the skill.

Then figuring out the most optimal combinations of Pictos to use within the party for max damage output is oddly addictive, I just want to keep engaging in battles.

Just try to learn and understand it, give it an hour or two of real effort and it will pay off. If it doesn't, no worries, you can ease the process to enjoy other aspects of the game.

The QTEs actually take me back to the older Mario & Luigi games on gba. Really fun and nostalgic lol

Anyone else feel like Lune is irreplaceable as a party member? I'll never switch her out, favourite RPG mage since Lulu ❤️

Amd they have similar names too lol
Lune is the best healer in the game and healers rarely leave your party in an RPG during progression

The amount of Soulslike mechanics is really sending me

It's really necessary for resting at a camp fire
flag to resurrect all enemies on the field

You have a flask with a certain number of charges (starts at 1) for healing the party between battles, it recharge when you rest at a camp fire flag, let me guess your can obtain additional charges during the game

Also they are doing the annoying thing where the enemy slowly winds up an attack for 30 seconds and then it suddenly comes out real fast

Thanks for infecting every game on Earth with your mechanics Miyazaki love u forever

Really enjoyed my first 5 hours so far. My only minor complaint is when in areas you don't get a map. Once you're in the main hub you do. Not a total killer as the first couple of levels I've been in are fairly linear. But there have been some areas that open up and it would be nice.

Gameplay is really good. I love the QTEs mixed with the turn based. Almost turns it into a rhythm like game as well with that. Story is super confusing to me but it does seem interesting. Lastly, the music is fucking awesome

Got the "vehicle" and randomly went into a side area off the beaten path. Spent the next 90 minutes exploring it including two very fun boss fights back to back at the end. What a blast, they really nailed the combat. I strongly encourage people to put points in vitality and even some in defense. Being able to tank a couple hits while you're learning the timings makes it far less frustrating.

Also I got a picto that autokills a party member, what is the point of this? lol

Got way better at all the qtes now. The parry is very easy and I love how they are mixing things together very fun. The offense qtes I can hit perfect easily now also red head does tons of damage if you do that.

Everyone be sure to constantly explore the overworld, especially after reaching certain points in the story. There is A LOT that can be missed, there won't be an NPCs giving you quests to go here or there, you just have to visit these places yourself and see what treasures they contain.

The voice acting in English is fantastic and the facial expressions on character models are really well done

The game needs a cutscene viewer, someone should ping the devs about implementing that in a patch

In that case I won't be bothering with it.Main story for me

I upgraded to an atmos setup with height speakers a year ago and windows atmos has variable audio lag. I've been living with it and using it because it sounds awesome (and I bought it so I'm using it lol). But this game relies on timing with the audio cues so much and I couldn't dodge shit lol. Put windows in stereo and all is good now. Going whole boss fights with barley getting g hit and the lipsync is so much better.

Really wish they could fix atmos gaming lag as its a problem on ps5 and Xbox too. My receiver does a pretty nice job upmixing stereo to my atmos speakers, voices even only come out from the center speaker which is great.

definitely need to be good at the QTE to deal real damages.

Cant play this as a turned off turn based game

I think some enimies hit too hard early game when you're still trying to learn the timing and cues of attacks and that makes it frustrating. I've found going higher defense with my builds have allowed me to get better with the timing of enemy attacks without dying multiple times.
Yeah not investing enough in defense might have been a part of my problem. Same with not slowing down opponents. But I think it's also enemy variety and how you basically have to sacrifice the first turn to learn how a new enemy is attacking. Or try to remember how you defended against that enemy during your previous encounters.

What's funny is that the game is giving you a massive cue when you have to jump to avoid damage. Why couldn't they make similar versions (even very subtle) for other types of attacks?

It would trivialize the combat too much since dodging the jumps is so easy. I think it's a nice balance what they settled for. The game, like most RPGs, becomes more forgiving the more you play and properly exploit its RPG mechanics.

I don't fully agree with that. because I recently playing Xenoblade X and it was AMAZING.

Linear or open world if its done well then great and it's done poorly then it going to bad no matter what.
Sure, a good game is a good game no matter if it's open-world or not, but some RPGs have been trendchasing and lost themselves in the process.

Can someone very shortly explain to me why this game is such a hit?
I've looked at some gamepaly and it looks like AA game from xbox 360? (fidelity aside).
I get that distinct unreal engine 3 bloominess and gibberish monsters/artwork.

I don't know anything about the game. So sell me on it.
Normally, I would play it to see myself but every game is 70 hours nowadays... and I am so tired of it. Why can't games be 20 hours again.
edit: Also, I was never a big fan of turn based combat because in my mind it was a cope out of real time combat in the age when it was difficult to do good real time combat.

edit: This post came out more ignorant and aggressive than I wanted to. sorry. Just please help me understand why is it getting such high scores? What am I missing out on?

I can only speak for myself but so far the characters are great and have great chemistry together, fantastic art direction, the music it's fucking godlier and the turn based combat is AMAZING!

Interesting story, great prologue. I can't wait to see how the story unfolds. It's been a long time since I felt this way about a game. I just hope the gameplay doesn't get boring after a while.

Played the intro a bit, almost made a grown man cry. The style is lovely but man does it look like an Unreal game. It reminds me of the 360 days.

Probably not the right person for this game anyway as I generally dislike JRPGs and sometimes even loath them, but I am not really feeling the game yet. Need to play some more to form an opinion, but so far I don't really get the hype.

Me neither.Great prologue though

And you thought this game would magically make you like a genre you "dislike" and even "loathe"? Makes sense 👍
I probably should have expanded on that. There are some JRPGs I have enjoyed like that turn based Yakuza game and I don't really have a problem with game mechanics per se. It is more about the lethargic pacing, repetition of information, presentation, art-style, banal characterisation and storytelling, cringy dialogue that usually irks me and I was kind of hoping that this would do its very own, super French thing and so far it feels like some faux-Japanese fanfic to me. I will not give up on it just yet, though.

Premise is intriguing, but let's see if they can deliver on story. It's unfortunate that I find myself wishing this wasn't a game but show instead.

I like the premise too but why does every game has to be 100 hours long.... it's so intimidating.
if this was a 360 games (like it looks), it would be 20-25 hours.

Papi with love I tell you, stop writing essays and go play the game. Let the game speak for itself

it not feasible to not research a game before playing nowadays. everything is fucking 100 hours.
But it does look interesting.

This game is not 100 hours, the main story quest is around 30 hours and a 100% run is like 55.

Glass Cannon is the way to play this game since you have parry and Dodge, puting all my points on mighty and melting everything omw, i just hit for 2k on the second map.

But how to survive being Glass Cannon ? be perfect or go home.

Further into the game now, I'm starting to really believe this is the Final Fantasy X of the generation. It might really be a masterpiece we have on our hand here

The fucking Troubadour optional boss in Flying Waters was beating my ass over and over, not because he had like hard mechanics or anything, but just because his attack patterns are designed with no obvious tells when to dodge in the most annoying Soulslike design fashion and I had to memorize timing dodges while ignoring what the mother fucker actually appeared to be doing on screen. Fuck that guy, at least he dropped a really good weapon for all that aggravation

Am i in act 2? I am doing the Axon quests. I feel like I am too far in the game and nearing the end. I didn't see the Act 2 message on the screen. Anyways, I am around level 30 with level 12 weapons.

I don't want to say anything till I beat the game but I am stunned. Feels like I randomly walked into FFX of this generation like U Unknown Soldier said.

Holy cow that prologue got me GOOD! FUCK THE PAINTRESS!!

Also there's this pinocchio mf kinda off the main path, REAL STRONG, can I come back to this guy? Not sure how linear this game is and if I can return to areas

I don´t like a lot of story and dialogue before a game really starts, but E33 nailed very well. Great world builder and turn combat.

I am trying to get to village but there is this ultimate guy and I don't do a lot of damage to it. Any tipsEarly game

The parry cues could be better.

Is main VO French or English? Some of the English sounds stilted and lame, honestly.

Also have issues visually. Artistically it's fine but those flat flowers, the battles are hard to read at first, the fog. The latter feels deliberate?

Went and looked up a walkthough to double check and yup, apparently this is the SECOND mime you can come across??

I guess you can come back though so that's what I'm gonnah do lol
There's a mime in Lumiere where you start the game's Prologue, it's worth loading a previous save back in the Prologue just to beat his ass and get that trophy before you continue with the game

You can also just start a new game in another slot and run over to kick his ass rq if your main save slot no longer has saves that go back that far back

My main tip on parrying is to listen for the cue rather than look for it.

As the game progresses the animations get more purposefully misleading. But there's almost always a consistent sound that tells you when to parry.
