I think it would be smart if they at least planned to go a couple of games in a row before reinventing. The improvement from Remake to Rebirth combat is significant (as is common for a lot of other franchises from the first to second game), and they forfeit that biggest opportunity to refine when they reinvent after only one attempt. It ends up feeling like a succession of rough first attempts.
 
Yes, only haters and Square Enix themselves dare to affirm that turn based shouldn't exist anymore.

Also pure turn based could be nice but the true strength of FFs for me was ATB used in 4 to 9. That was FF's own identity.

But more importantly it should figure out how to shrink budgets. A mainline FF with a really opulent HD-2D style would move tons of units and cost almost nothing compared to recent entries.

I honestly think people are burned out on glitz and expense and are looking for originality and charm more and more.

I love turn based battles more, but I have to acknowledge that FF is too mainstream for it. Young players aren't just getting it and FF can't risk loosing these players.

I think Remake and Rebirth found the sweet spot being real-time while still having these turn based systems in place. So ithink they could continue using this system as the base and tweak it with every title.
 
It doesn't matter. Let it be the shit it is, how long are we gonna pretend that they'll be as good as they were when we were kids man? Did I like the turn based entries more? Yes. Is the combat the reason why they've been shit lately? Fuck no.

If you take an RPG with shit pacing, shit writing, shit voice over, uneven visuals, and tons of filler, and just make it turn based, it's not like it's gonna be magically good now.

FF's over.

On the other hand, I adored Octopath Traveler 2 that I played through recently, truly an outstanding title. Just have that team keep pumping out great RPG's, but for the love of God, please keep Nomura and his childish writing and awful designs away from that franchise. At least let Square have that and Dragon Quest, and a new Nier game every once in a while. Also, bring back Ogre Battle and Front Mission, that's quite a lineup of great RPG IP, no need for FF.

I bet that Expedition 33 is going to end up selling more than the latest Final Fantasy entries… That mentality is what have the FF franchise in that position, i just hope that SE is taking notes.

Great game. It was the last great FF, everything after has been various shades of shit or just disappointing. XV....there was something there, but they fumbled the execution. XVI seems like a decent game to me, but it's clearly not what fans wanted out of the franchise. Everything they've ever done in Ivalice has been great.
 
Coe33 combat + Legend of Legaia meele combos + BOF4 elemental combo system and It ll be the perfect turn base combat ever.

I love FFVII Rebirth combat and I hope that it will only get better on new FF games.


After Persona 5 my interest on turn based combat on traditional jrps died, I loved them on older games, but today I can't stand them. I tried to like newer turn based rpgs like Refantazio and Expedition 33, but I just can't.

Weirdly enough I still like turn based combat on strategy games and on pvp in Epic Seven.

You're not wrong about the poor pacing and bad writing, but honestly the combat was not good at all in 15. You can hold X to win most fights and spam healing items nonstop. There was almost no strategy and it felt overly flashy and chaotic and not in a good way.

16 does combat better, but its RPG mechanics are as deep as a puddle. Plus it was overly easy and forgiving.

I do believe both games would have been received better if they had turn based combat similar to E33.

I enjoy the both. However I really enjoy the combat in the newer versions. FF7: Rebirth and Remake gameplay is perfection.

Nothing like Fortnite btw, shit poll.

Yeah they aren't really turn based in any sense, but I'd consider describing them as 'full action' to be pretty misleading too.

It's not turn based but the strategies that work are similar to those of atb, and atb itself was a "hybrid". 7R system does feel like atb "come to life". You are sort of right that the pausing is unrelated because it's mostly there so you can always have control of the pace. Some people will spend a fraction of a fight paused and some will stay in pause for longer periods because they want to plan and take it slow (a massive benefit of turned based systems, kept intact by wait-mode in atb).

But either way, you want to set up situations where you have the atb charges on the right characters at the right times. That's the meta of the atb and it's influence over the action of 7R is vastly stronger than loot at stats have over so many modern games we call "action rpgs". Some of the most beloved getting away with barely passable full-realtime (aka action) gameplay for 60 hours.
 
I've been playing FF7 Rebirth and Expedition 33 at the same time, and I find Rebirth's combat more fun. But I like the story, game design, and music much more in Expedition.
 
Nah. I don't want the series to be shackled by self-imposed restrictions, I want the devs to experiment with new systems . Whether they are turn based, real time, or something completely new for the series.

Real time or turn based can both be great. Personally I loved the combat in Rebirth and I'm also loving the combat in Expedition 33.

The bigger problem with mainline FF games for the past like 15 years is everything else: The forgettable stories and characters, the bland writing, the boring worlds with uninteresting dungeons and uninspired side content, etc.

Except, it kind of does.

You pause the combat when spells/abilities are ready, decide what you want to do. Do action combat for regular combat instead of just selecting attack, attack, attack like you do in a straight turn-based game.

That's NOT a full action game.

Honestly at this point I think if they did a big-budget main-line Final Fantasy with turn-based combat it would get renewed interest because it has been so long.

Just make sure to innovate within that constraint so the system isn't a literal beat for beat retread. Clair Obscur doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it riffs on older ideas enough that you get something fresh.

They just need to have nice presentation and animation speed so everything feels snappy, aka not FF9 (love the game with mods for this reason).

If FF7RRe IS "hybrid" than FF12 was the first to inplement this system since both 99% the same.
 
Since when did FF have turn based combat? The only game In the series that has it, is FF10. Granted 10 is one of the best FF of all time.

Every other game has some version of ATB.

16 combat was fun, but to easy. You either go full DMC or don't half ass it.

Imo the best combat the entire series ever had is what's used in remake and rebirth. Very fun and satisfying.

You know, I'm not even the biggest fan in the world of the typical JRPG turn-based combat (and to be clear, I LOVE turn-based tactics in general... just not the menu-based type popularized by JRPGs like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest), but this argument about the "obvious ceiling" of turn-based RPGs will never not be funny to me in a world where stuff like Pokemon exists.
Or the more recent Baldur's Gate 3, to point another one.

I think they are just fine moving on and simply having turned based on Bravely Default, Octopath, Dragon Quest etc and many more

This obsession with FINAL FANTASY being that is stupid btw..you already have several fucking series by them that are turned based and each Final Fantasy is different, so.....you might as well fucking argue Bravely Default is FFXII, FFXIII etc and print out some fake ass cover to sleep at night or some shit lol
