Kingdom Come Deliverance II director says devs "self-censored" to avoid outrage

I guess people were right about this one. I still think a lot of it was overblown, but here we go.

"For example, I wanted [politically liberal Czech actor] Ondřej Vetchý for a role [as King Sigismund in Kingdom Come: Deliverance II], and I was really worried he'd turn us down because someone would tell him what I'm supposedly like," he then recalled. "But he took the role – he knew who I was. When he showed up, I thought, 'Okay, is there going to be a fight?' because he's known for being intense. But we actually got along well. We even talked politics – not avoiding it – and though we didn't agree on everything, it was an intelligent debate."

"I'm always afraid of that – that this stuff will hurt potential collaborations," Vávra admitted. "It certainly makes personal relationships harder. Some people just can't handle it. I'm not like that. In fact, I think conservatives are more thick-skinned about this stuff than liberals. Maybe because they had to keep quiet for 20 years and are used to separating politics from work. Liberals often act like everyone should think the same way – and when they realize that's not the case, they can't handle it

This is for all the people who constantly ask for proof that developers are forced to include/remove things and not everything is a conscious, organic design choice.

Yep. An utter pox on creativity.

These leeches seriously need to get out of the industry.

Didn't we already know this like 2+ months ago?

The gist is that it was done to avoid controversy and sell more games.

Let's face it - this is the aim of the majority of creators and is not a revelation at all - consumers can always vote with their wallets.

Nobody has clean hands in this - if you made an authentic show set in the English middle ages, it would get shat on by liberals. However, I would be only too happy to shit on the same show if it had colour blind casting, meta-humour and trans nonsense everywhere. The internet has polarised everyone because they sell more advertising that way. This guy is just reaching for the middle that probably doesn't exist anymore.

Didn't this same dude say once that they'd never censor there game etc etc? So he essentially was full of shit and backtracked on himself and is now blaming consumers for why he censored the game in the first place. Bs. You censored the game because you chose to do so under your own power. No one held a gun to your head and forced you to do anything, so don't go blaming people for why you made the decision that you ultimately did. That's coward shit and embarrassing on his part.

I think even Marek Tyminski, the CEO of CI Games and Lords of the Fallen developer, even mentioned they originally self censored for the similar reasons.

Central European studios (that don't give a fuck about LGBT+ propaganda) did this to avoid unfair criticism from western activists/reviewers. This is understable.

We had thread about this few months ago...

It's nice to see CI Games no longer care about pandering or whatever even with a sequel coming out next year.

Yeah, seems like most non-US based devs are realising that pandering or "trying to keep a middle ground" with these kind of things doesnt affect sales as much as they might be lead to believe.

I recommend reading the whole article (or much preferably, listening to the podcast, but that's obviously no-go for all you non czech speaking heathens).
It is much less controversial than it sounds from the thread headline.
He doesn't really say anything new - I watched interviews with him from years ago where he was talking about being self-conscious about what they write, how hard they push the line on humor and such, since people around the world have different standards and they don't want to be banned or raked over coals anywhere. It is just common sense.

And tbh KCD2 has much better and more naturalistic writing than majority of other games anyway.

At least I don't remember a dialogue about whether I am a tits man or an ass man in any other (and especially western) game :p

Playing Avowed now really puts the difference into perspective...

As for hiring consultants - Warhorse is actually not staffed by gypsies, jews, africans and italians. So when you want to have people in your game that you don't know that much about, you consult people who do.

Interesting. Thanks for bringing an seemingly uncloaked perspectice. I bet very few of the hopelessly entrenched guys here will recognize your post. But I admire your noble effort to stand with the truth before a firing squad of notions :)

That dude had better acting in the few minutes he had than entire Henry's dialogue in both games. It's one of the main reasons KCD is just a decent game. I hate the protagonist.

"But what happened in the meantime is that things flipped so much that the other side started attacking us—saying I'm a leftist, or whatever else. So basically, for the very things we were worried we'd get slammed for by the left, we got just as hard-hit, but from the right, because we added some things in response to earlier criticism, but we did it in a historically accurate way."

Yep. Try to appease both sides then you'll just piss them both off. Better to ignore them and stay true to yourself.
