Polygon: I tested Xbox's powerful - and heavy - new handheld

Asus and Xbox's new handheld weighs 1.58 pounds, and it's noticeable

The 7-inch screen looks gorgeous, and the game's remaster is a stunner no matter what size screen it's on (I also played it on some much bigger TV screens). But the most noticeable thing about the ROG Xbox Ally X was, unfortunately, how tired my forearms were after just 20 minutes of playing the Gears of War remaster.

For me, a handheld console also needs to be light enough that it feels truly portable — something you can throw into a purse or backpack and bring with you to a place where it won't be competing directly with your TV or PC. So it needs to split the difference between being powerful enough to run contemporary AAA games and have them look great in comparison to your TV, and yet not so powerful that it weighs down your travel bag.

On one hand 1.5 lbs is not that much. On the other side of things, that's a lot if you are going to hold it in your hands for couple of hours.

I don't think it's a huge deal, but I can see some folks struggling.

Most handhelds can't fit in your pocket....and haven't since....GBA?

Switch, ROG, Steam Deck, Switch 2 (just to name a few) cannot fit in your pocket. You use them sitting with it on your lap, propped up on a table, or airplane desk tray, lying in bed. How many use these standing up playing them elevated?

Exactly, he's clearly not like us big boi OGs who have forged our forearms and biceps with the duke 💪🏾🙅🏾‍♂️💪🏾

I would say kids might struggle but I dont think its aimed at them, I have the Ally X which is apperently 1.49 lbs, Im not hench or anything, have tennis elbow in both arms and currently some grip issues in my right hand, I use it in bed laying down and sitting up in a chair and I havnt thought its to heavy, im sure most adults will have no problem with it at all.

It's a PC handheld not a console. I wish games journalists would stop acting like Microsoft's marketing makes everything a console.

It's a little heavier than a Steam Deck and roughly the same as other Ally's isn't it?

Even the Switch 1 could be considered quite big and heavy, so I didn't find it surprising. I think the Switch Lite probably has the most ideal size for most games. Phone+ gamepad combo is pretty cool too. Even Miyoo Mini's screen is more than enough for retro games, so I don't need bigger screens for those. These things are made for gigachad gamers, as you can see them flexing left and right around here.
