Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

You can't even take a joke.

Because I probably enjoy games graphics more than most of you. I take hundreds of screenshots in every game. Always did that.
The point is to enjoy graphics. Not … not enjoy them.

Everyone and their grandmother knows that even the best looking games can have a smoothe rock. Not something anyone should focus on. Crisis had ton of these …
You may like graphics, but you seem to dislike next gen graphics, lol.

Why are taking photographs with Nokia 3310 and how is that relevant to 4K PS5 games?
It's not. I joked to the guy. And no. That picture is not takes with Nokia 3310. It didn't had a camera you dumbass.
This picture was taken with a floppy disc camera from 1997. By me.

And once you guys grow up, you will realize that there is SO MUCB MORE to graphics that sharpness of textures.
Why everyone loves how co33 looks? Technically it's quite weak. Yey it impresses.

Ghost of Yotei looks fun, but visually it looks very similar to Ghost of Tsushima. Definitely a huge disappointment, visually speaking.

It's so odd because it seems that the standard around PlayStation fans has changed and now "looks like a PS4 game but at a higher res and 60fps" is all it takes for so many to claim it's the most beautiful game ever.

It doesn't. I finished got first time this year. This looks way better.
Not sure if better than ac shadows though. Better style probably

Pick any other game releases this year and you will find a smooth rock in it.
And I guarantee you will find smooth rock next gen too.

Pick a different battle
GoY has smooth everything, except bamboo

Dude, so much mental gymnastics you doing here, lol. If you care about artstyle and all that crap then go and make a thread of your own and leave people to talk about graphics. You seem to he happy with PS4 era graphics, now leave people alone who want more than that. Seriously, your gaslighting is tiring and not moving any discussion forward in this thread.

I finished GoT on PC less than a year ago and Ghost of Yotei looks very, very similar. I'm sure it looks better in some ways but you could show most people the new game and they wouldn't see a difference from GoT.

It looks similar in style but it's much higher fidelity. Like death stranding 1 to 2.
I might post some pics tomorrow.

If you guys can see the difference between got1 and 2, it's not me being blind.

Yup but that is how gamers have been this entire gen with Sony. It all started with Ragnarok the Last of Us 1 Remake. I remember all the people acting like those games were actually taking advantage of the PS5 and people defending them. Then we has GT7, Spiderman 2, no effort "remasters" like UC4 and especially Last of Us 2 the bar has gotten lower over time for Sony and their fans.

At least Death Stranding has some noticeable improvements even if that game should've looked a bit better. Ghost of Yotei has nothing you can point to and say "yeah that looks way better". This is even worse than Spiderman 2 ....way worse situation.

It's largely not about laziness though and it's stupid to keep suggesting that that's what the issue is. It's how the studio uses their budget, level of talent on the team, strength of leadership, cohesive team vision/culture, etc.. etc.. etc..

If anything it's lazy to suggest that all these issues are just due to individual employees being lazy.
The game look safe and iterative as fuck so we are all questioning where the budget went...

I am sorry and dont take this wrong way because this is directed not at you but at these developers, but this IS about laziness. They did not even create new textures. They are literally reusing all the textures from the first game. Foliage, rocks, ground level detail, wood, ground level detail, everything is exactly the same. Go take some fucking pictures or just buy some new textures from the megascan website and import it in your game.

Everyone here was bitching about lack of RTGI and mesh shaders but that requires actual effort in R&D by the engineering team. Taking fucking pictures and creating new assets is literally the only job of artists who spent 5 years on this game apparently not doing anything new. It's literally the same.

This is what we used to see in DLCs. Sequels used to use brand new assets. Sequels on the same platform btw. Sequels that took 2 years. This time around it almost sounds like all the artists and engineers were let go and a bunch of designers just reused assets from the previous game.

Not having enough engineers for doing R&D on RTGI isnt lazy. It's a budget issue. Reusing textures from a last gen game is a laziness issue. Plain and simple.

And that's fair, but I think it's silly to blame it on the random associate art designer that's making $80k a year instead of the multi-millionares on the leadership team that are supposed to be providing vision, direction, and structure to put together a quality product with the budget, time, and talent they've been allocated.

you are used to overdetailed graphics probably.
Just because you can make texture sharper, does not always mean you should.
I finished got and acs this year. one got way sharper textures than the other.
But got looks incredibly impressive at times despite being way lower fidelity.
You're quickly becoming the next Chief Dada

But what I'm saying is it's SO short-sighted to suggest that the reason that textures are being reused from the first game is because Junior Associate Game Artist #3 showed up to work for 6 months and went "eh, I'm tired. I don't feel like creating new textures, I'm just going to chill instead and copy these over from the first game".

It's because a strategic and conscious decision was made by a leadership team that instead of putting time/resources/budget into creating all new textures from scratch, it would be put into marketing, or "pre-production", or to overpaying for voice actors, or for bonuses, or to line the pockets of their buddies at the top, or to waste time and money meandering about trying to put together a "vision", etc.. etc..

The whole "lazy dev" argument has always been misguided because it lets the people who are really failing us off the hook. The 9,000 employees that were let go by Microsoft last week weren't let go because they were all lazy. It's because leadership made and continues to make massive mistakes and poor decisions at the top.

In fact, what annoys me most is the complacency that players have, it's always the same phrases, "beautiful", 'incredible', "I can't wait to play".
Imagine if YT didn't exist, it would be much worse.
Can't anyone be rational anymore? I'd better get back to retro games.

This is just pathetic levels of lazy....they just upped the draw distance over got1 but everything else in untouched. Ps3 era disgusting textures, very flat lighting, even the old, its only saving grace is bad... embarrassingly low level of geometric detail i mean you should not have visible polygon edges on screen on a freaking ps5 while in cinematics. Honestly this looks bad even by late ps4 standards. Sony needs to reign their devs in because they are basically sucking up money for no reason...where did the funds from doubling the budget go exactly? They are reusing assets and textures, they literally upgraded nothing in terms of tech. I am legit confused how bad its become.

I don't know how they overlook this kind of shit. It's weird.
These are likely presented by only a handful of assets that are heavily duplicated too, so someone could easily go in and in a matter of minutes have that tidied up.

I expect a lot of these are straight out of the first game, in which case I don't see why -- with 5 years and millions of dollars -- they can't allocate just a few man hours here and there for artists just to go in and touch these up. It really shouldn't be a matter of too many polygons for an asset like that.

Yeah, this one is on Sony's leadership and them imposing their studios to minimise cost and recycle old tech. It does beg the question though, what have the people who's job it is to create assets been doing for the last half a decade? Like it seems some departments have barely had anything to do in the last 5 years. I'm sure they did create new assets based on old tech, but it's clear these guys were making decent pay doing minimal work. Same goes for animation guys.

Lazy gets the point across more effectively.

I'm hoping the hot tub shit was for the trailer and that they did a quick and dirty copy-paste. I'm gonna be blown away if that bamboo is in the final game.

We can blame leadership all we want but these same artists used to create brand new assets when they went from Infamous 1 to Infamous 2 in two years then brand new next gen assets for infamous in 3 years. And finally brand new assets for Ghost of Tushima in 4 years after their first game got cancelled in 2016.

So the question remains, just wtf were these artists doing for the last five years?

Again, we are not asking for R&D on mesh shaders and RTGI, we are simply asking for stuff that used to happen every 2 years and still happens in most new games. With the exceptions being Spiderman 2, Death Stranding 2 and now Ghosts 2. And of course Zelda botw, but at least their designers went to town on physics. WTF have these devs been doing for five years?

Laziness. Devs who have stopped caring. People who collect checks and work maybe 1-2 hours a day. There is no other explanation.

I thought it was crazy that Spiderman 2 took five years and cost $300 million, and they still reused the same map, but at least they upped the detail and reworked nearly every single building texture. These guys are literally using the same exact textures and models for trees, foliage, and grass. It's embarrassing.

In school, i knew kids like this who slacked off all day. Never did homework. Never paid attention and if you got stuck with them in lab, they would leave you with all the work. For some reason, sony studios have been infested by these losers with zero work ethic. There is no way you come to work every day for five years and produce something copy pasta like this.

And it's not just sony studios, Arkhane just announced that Blade has finally gone into production. 4 years after their last game Deathloop came out. They have 190 developers who were literally sitting there holding their dicks for 4 years. I am sorry, but how the fuck are you in pre-production for 4 years and what does the rest of the studio do in that time? Everwild was in development for 8 years and people were upset at MS for cancelling it. Im sorry, 8 years in pre-production? wtf are you doing for 8 years? Perfect Dark as well. Brand new studio. Elite developers from ND, Rockstar, Infinity Ward, Crystal Dynamics, insomniac all failed to make a game for 7 years. 7!!!

The industry is infested with these lazy losers. THere is still a LOT of talent in the industry. Expedition 33, AC Shadows, Avatar, Outlaws, Silent Hill 2, Wukong, Hellblade 2, GTA6, witcher 4, ILL, Atomic Heart 2, etc all show that the talent is still there, the drive and ambition to be the best is still there. But for whatever reason, some studios are attracting the worst kind of worker.

This is nuts. Failure of leadership.

They're probably over there having meeting after meeting to go over market research on which game to start developing in full, and by the time they find a direction, some new analysis comes out because time has passed, trends have changed, and it says they HAVE to change direction up again, all while burning cash in wages and other overhead.

Just choose a passion project and GO. Your studio's going to get shut down anyway, might as well go out swinging.

That's one game im positive won't disappoint. We knew already that Yotei wasn't going to impress based on the first big trailer. The writing was on the wall. Of course the hope was that it would be improved as we hear launch.

Yotei is a pathetic turn out for a ps5/pro sequel to what was a beautiful game back in (2020?). Just a shameful use of ps5 hardware.

When is the gaming media/youtube going to say "what the FUCK Sony?", because until that happens most gamers will be content with these products, despite them being a total slap in the face to Ps5 and especially Ps5 Pro owners.

Console gamers are the most subservient, brainwashed group of people though ive been saying it all gen, after I saw the reaction to Ragnarok, LoU1 Remake, and Spiderman 2 I knew we were screwed.

If Sony hierarchy decided that they were gonna save cost and reuse same tech this gen then you really can't blame the devs here. I'm sure they created some new assets, they're just based on the same old tech. Nothing devs can do here if the mandate from Sony is to save cost and reuse same tech. I would agree with you if it was one or two studios, but it's literally every Sony studio. They clearly had a mandate. Also don't forget, some of these studios were known as top tier studios when it comes to cutting edge visuals, so I'm sure they didn't just become bad at their job at the turn of generation. Sony is happy with making money with minimal effort and they're happy with letting lot of their devs do very little, because that's cheaper for them in the end.

In my opinion i think Sony have been kind of caught in two minds , with single player stuff , they received so much praise last generation and many awards that perhaps it's become a "if it ain't broke don't fix " kind of attitude.

All the while having a good look at the multiplayer/live service sector and wanting a piece of the action too, which has not worked out all that well has it.

Personally I think they have some talented studios that as being more of a Xbox guy i wish they had but fatigue with Sonys stuff has kicked in for me. Yōtei looks decent imo but nothing that made me feel "woah day one no doubt "

Wow that was underwhelming, AC Shadows comparisons will be a bloodbath.
it will hold up when you are out in the open world exploring fields mostly lit by sunlight.

it will begin to fall apart when you go into camps at night or during overcast shadows with no direct sunlight which is when the indirect lighting fails, and fail to properly light last gen assets.

Cities, shrines or bigger towns will also suffer even in day time.

Sony clearly spent a lot of money on live service stuff (which failed) and decided that single player side is where they were gonna save money by recycling. Both of these ended up being disasters gor gamers, but only one was a disaster for Sony (live service).

You are right. Shu did confirm recently that there was a mandate about 'pulling back' on the graphics, but you can pull back and still have new textures for your next gen game. This is frankly insane.

Like i said, tech or lack of investment in tech like RTGI or mesh shaders I understand, but its obvious that they are reusing all the same assets like this is DLC. I've never seen anything like this before. Not even in Spiderman 2. Even DS2 updated some snow shaders, borrowed water from HFW, added realtime time of day, and updated some ground textures, and of course the character models and cutscenes are a legit generational improvement. HFW reworked all assets too and its a cross gen game. Ratchet and Demon Souls though i guess with Demon Souls they had to.

This is something completely different.

Pretty funny that Double Fine of all studios is a whole generation ahead of Sony 1st party graphically. And this is likely not even their main game since Shafer isn't directing. And they're small.
