Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

Anyone who is still sane after spending $500 + $700 on these next gen consoles, paying $70-80 for these next gen games simply for being next gen has my respect. The unhinged are the enlightened ones who simply cannot make sense of industry leading studios settling first for cross gen games, and then when finally given the opportunity to do next gen games settling for the same last gen graphics.

Then how the hell Chinese developers come this strongly after the COVID? They were even in ground zero country, their talent, their minds should be perished!!! How can this be? And there are western studios coming too weakly that I might think they are affected by a mutated COVID strain which cause brain rot.

One thing is certain about Yotei: Sucker Punch and Sony really wanted to play safe. Maybe it is laziness maybe it is "60 FPS fetish" but like I said above: They act like their brains are rotted and they lost all their fires. Copy/paste "sequel" is kinda low, you know, even the bamboo texture is same as in GoT, come on :messenger_unamused:

I said this in another thread, but covid excuses are just excuses. it made by software engineering firm more productive from engineering to consulting and even sales which were almost never done in office anyway.

And a lot of western developers released game right in the middle or at the tail end of the work from home mandates and managed to produce industry leading next gen visuals in 2021-2023. Sony's own Ratchet, HFW, and other western studios games like Callisto, Plague's Tale, Avatar, Starfield, Forza, Jedi Survivor, Alan Wake 2 etc all came out in 2022 to 2023, and looked phenomenal.

Again, this goes back to them reusing the fucking textures for trees, bushes, shurbs, foliage, grass, huts, houses, and even the ground. It is shocking. Even DS2 and Spiderman 2 didnt do this, and at least updated those textures even if the underlying tech was the same. I can understand reusing the same lighting engine, lack of mesh shader support, leading to a cross gen look but the same exact textures is just lazy.

Updating textures for a sequel, let alone a next gen sequel, is something the industry has always done. DLCs, no, no one updates textures for DLCs. Sony is treating this game like DLC.

Yeah, missing several passes here. No AO, no self shadows on characters, zero volumetrics, and piss poor bounce lighting off textures. This feels like an early ps4 title.

Game looked wonderful in other videos so im hoping this is just a one off.

This game seems to have had a massive visual downgrade from initial reveal to what's being shown closer to release.

Chinese work ethic for one. And #2 is probably less corpos in general hanging over studios trying to save a penny and abuse the goodwill of gamers.

The Chinese government unleashed their own massive economic stimulus in the years since covid (not just because of covid) and I believe a lot of that actually made it to burgeoning companies including gaming studios. Whereas in the US it just went out to everyone as stimulus checks and lined the pockets of execs.

It does look way better, but its missing basic "next gen" features. Why is the geometry so low in the character models? Where is the RTGI?

The best though are unique and technically up to standards.

Which is not what we're seeing with Sony titles or others (and they used to be).

You're conflating two completely different arguments into one. Originality or "art style" has nothing to do with tech.

Just look at something like Lego Journey, or some nice AA recent games. Even indie ones.
 
Releasing next gen only sequels to games from 5 years ago that don't look any better isn't unique, it's lazy.

GoT is on ps4. GoT2 is on ps5. And they basically look the same.

Now compare Uncharted 3 and Uncharted 4. Or the two TLoU.
 
I really don't understand what happened to this industry. Games takes longer to make, cost more and yet they don't improve the graphics and don't evolve the gameplay. It truly defies all logic.

I would question if it is a lack of talent but I can't do a developers job so that's unfair.

I have noticed is an uppity attitude to any criticism and a tail wags the dog kind of thinking. Publishers/studios dont like differing opinions, it's probably why a fair number have a concentrated effort to control narratives by using sell outs to dictate opinions for them, all for the cost of integrity and a few chairs.

What gets me the most is every birth of a new generation there is a stern effort to make clear how powerful the consoles are compared to their predecessors and what they can render, expecting a avalanche of pre orders .

Yet when the consumer questions the quality of the content, it's that they are never satisfied, always negative and expectations are too high.

You know when a game is a step up from what has been done before, you see it immediately, it's evident straight away. I think that's what some folk miss, or I could be mistaken.

I barely post in this thread beacuse frankly you guys are fucking mental (In a likable endearing way!)

However one thing that seems a big improvement to my untrained in current gen open world games is draw distance and sense of scale.

Landscapes and details seem to stretch out far further than last gen games. This is really obvious in Spider-man 2 sitting on skyscraper and you can see boats in the river that you can web sling down to get on board. Death Stranding 2, Yotei and even shock, horror FFVII rebirth have really good draw distance. I was impressed at least that you could see Highwinds moving Propella about 2km in game distance.

One thing I hated about Forbidden West was how boxed in everything felt. There's always a convenient mountain or patch of fog stopping you viewing far out even when your flying. I assume this is from it being a cross gen game.

Anyway carry on nothing else to add.

And yes shut up I know about Death Stranding 2 mid range detail being poor if you zoom in. The overall image still looks very impressive

You're comparing an open world to a much more limited game, with closed environments, mirrors, and smoke to create a beautiful visual. It's much more about art than power.

This is exactly what I mean in my post above. Look how conveniently the forest blocks everything out in GOT. All last gen open world games were like this even RDR2.

At the same time the copy/paste texture feeling and proof is not good for a 5 year gap sequel game. Also I'm not a graphic person per se but the overall lighting in Yotei seems too bland in most of screenshots. Probably this game would be a looker with RTGI and some ray traced lightings.

If they even have somekind of real time lightning like software lumen which have very low cost on gpu it would look amazing they are just very lazy developers alongside bullshit management

Why create new hardware and new technology and then not use it? Yotei looks like a PS4 Pro game because of it…
 
Ghost of Tsushima 2 looks really good, just not the level of graphical fidelity I expect this generation. Damn, looking back, the PS4 was such a beast and a true generational leap over the PS3. The PS5 generation feels like a wet fart.

Look, I'm all for pushing graphics tech but the people who say some current games look like a PS3 game need to find their old PS3s, plug them in and play these games and then come back here. I did just that recently and I was shocked by how these games actually look like on your TV when you play them...yikes.
I think YT compression helped these PS3 games look better than they actually do when played while doing a massive disservice to current gen games by washing out so much actual detail.

Sony is clearly limiting budgets here, they lost so much on Concord and other Gaas that they don't want to waste money on tech development.

PS3 era "arrogant Sony" was losing billions and yet their developers created the best looking games of that time...

Apparently, you have zero knowledge of game development. This processing power leap isn't proportional to a game's visuals. It's just numbers.

No one is pretending such an exponential jump; we're expecting modern tech on modern hardware.

The comparison, in fact, is against same kind of games already released: AC Shadows, SW Outlaws. Even RDR2 on pc still competes with GoT.

Well, we are not talking about the average PS3 game which yes, looks like shit in 2025. Top tier games like Uncharted, Killzone, Halo 4, Beyond, GOW3, and GTA5? Thats where the comparisons become a bit more accurate.

And yes, youtube and gifs help those games as well. But some of these games coming out dont even look as good as some PS4 games, so people will naturally think PS3.

And obviously, Mafia looks stunning at times, but that particular screenshot is awful. The whole point of lumen is to ensure that graphics never look that bad under any lighting condition.

Something is off indeed. Some parts looks OK but in other parts it doesn't look like it has any RTGI at all. It's very strange. The footage from their mini documentaries looked way better so we will have to wait and see if this is some kinda of console performance mode or the game is just an uneven mess.

Companies are making games to sell in the market, and graphics don't always sell. AC Shadows and SW Outlaws may look good, but nobody cares about them.
Sales is the real competition.

Besides, not everything necessarily comes down to visual fidelity. The game can have more detail, better animation, greater draw distance, more enemies on screen, better AI. The studio can still play it safe and take advantage of the hardware to achieve better performance and higher resolution.
