Watched 28 Years last night. Was just OK.

Entertaining enough but the more I think on it the more it annoys me.
The Pregnancy thing was dumb and the way the kid completely failed first time out but then decides to up sticks with his mum, they'd be dead in 10 minutes. Should have had a little time skip, made the kid a little older and more experienced imo. Actually didn't mind the ending. But I dunno, the apocalypse just doesn't seem that desperate or threatening here. Think I'd be OK in that timeline, and I'm a pussy.

Really enjoyed it, tense as fuck. Figured out what was going on pretty early but very well executed.

8/10.
Watched it today and enjoyed it the ending was good

For Bring Her Back fans out there.

Pretty cool.

What even is that site?

Weapons is a gem of a movie but it is not what you might expect from the trailers. The last quarter or so of the film is undoubtably a quirky comedy horror and you will either love it or hate it.

It reminded me a lot of Drag me to Hell (sam raimi) in it's execution.

This film literally made my skin crawl.. it's a hard watch if you know the history, probably worse if you dont

Another winner was this if you can get hold of it :messenger_ok:

This is quite fun as well, don't think I'll ever forget that Cop duo story..

Saaraahhhh..

Saw Dangerous Animals yesterday, pretty funny tho didn't surprise with an extraordinary plot, it was something watchable.

Bloody love Necronomicon! Not seen it in quite some time. Might have to watch it over the weekend.

Re-watched Blair Witch Project tonight. Still gives me the creeps

It's often panned as being mediocre but I strongly disagree. I am an avid hiker / camper and let me tell you if you let this one immerse you it's fucking terrifying. I have been in a few creepy scenarios deep in the woods in the past and when it's just you and your thoughts in a tent with noises outside there is nothing more frightening.

it's one of the most profitable films in history. I think the budget was a few hundred thousand and it made a couple hundred million

the very nature of the film made it draw criticism from folks for a few reasons IMO:

1. going back to my point about success, this film has one of the most insane return on investments ever. I think some say the film might have even cost less than $100k, and it made over $200 million. this made a lot of people feel like it was a scam, especially people who were critical of horror to begin with. I think this is dumb, but this sentiment was definitely a thing when it was first released

2. then when it came to horror fans, I think a lot were annoyed that it was being described as the first found footage horror film, when better found footage horror films existed long before it (films like Cannibal Holocaust and Man Bites Dog)

It was really oversold as well. News stories of people collapsing in the cinemas and it being the scariest movie ever were all over the TV. I was super excited to watch it in the cinema and came out pretty pissed off that I'd wasted my money on a turd.

yeah, there was that too

the problem with this sort of found footage film is that while it might be effective on some, there are a large portion of people who find these films boring and not scary at all

my parents are actually like that. if I put on blair witch project they'd fall asleep

I actually appreciate films that are slow burn or subtle and don't need in your face scares, but this sort of film definitely has the potential to be a snooze fest for some, which going back to your point, is not what they were being sold

Weapons was good - at the point it starts explaining itself it switches over into thriller/black comedy territory, so same thing as Barbarian.

I'd put Bring Her Back and Sinners above it this year.

Talk to Me was one of the best horror movies I've seen. Bring Her Back was disturbing, and not in a cheap way, but I didn't appreciate it because of who the violence is directed towards. So I guess you could say it was effective, but not something I enjoyed or would ask other people to watch. I'll still be on the lookout for those guys' next movie, though.

28 Years Later was aight. Wasn't a fan of some of the intentionally outlandish stuff.

Weapons was decent. I'd give it a 7 out of 10. Better than Barbarian, that's for sure.

That movie was fantastic but I'm never watching it again due to how much of a cunt the antagonist turned out to be. She was pretty effective in raising my blood pressure lol

For the longest time I've been checking every new horror film getting hype of the moment with absolute dread, having little to do with scares, and everything with knowing it's gonna be a crushing disappointment. Happy to report it finally paid off as I just watched Bring Her Back and it was bloody fucking amazing. Like holy shit, faith restored. From top-notch acting, cinematography, plot to audio. IMO must watch, instant classic of the genre.

I love the movie too, what did you think of the villian?

I have to toot my own horn I was the main one on here hyping this movie. I posted the trailer back in April and saw it on opening day. I'm glad people are enjoying it insomuch as one can enjoy such a brutal movie.

So while not really classified as Horror, I haven't been able to stop thinking about The Girl With The Needle since I saw it some months back. I'm a pretty jaded fuck quite frankly but this movie really hit me. It goes to really ugly places but never feels like silly exploitation. And it's fucking dark.

It's also visually stunning and reminded me of The Elephant Man and Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari despite not looking LIKE it. Also felt like the time period, not just look like it. It stuck with me like most modern films don't anymore and I do think it fits the Horror tag loosely enough for me to recommend in here.

Again highly recommended but do yourself a favor and go in blind.

Gave this a watch tonight. It's been a while since I watched some oldschool Kurosawa film.

This is a really good movie. It's more of a thriller than a horror movie perse, but it's a damn fine one at that.

Definitely recommend a watch if you haven't seen it boys.
This one is close to a 10/10 for me. It's fucking fantastic. Like a Japanese take on Seven with a heavy dose of Lynch but wholly its own thing. One of the most satisfying films I saw in the past few years. This also must've had a serious influence on Silent Hill. I could gush about this one for a long time, it's so good. I'm also a big fan of Pulse but this is an objectively better film craft-wise.

Best enjoyed with a headphones imo, the sound design is really eerie and quiet.

I just watched Talk To Me because of this thread. The promo image and title just seemed...really corny so I had avoided it.

You guys are right, that was real quality and surprisingly affecting. The makeup effects in this movie were on another level. I don't get chills easily after decades of Horror flicks but especially that woman in the bedroom when she's with the boyfriend, somebody put in that extra 10% to make something actually chilling looking. Also jesus christ the state of the brother, I cringed so hard every time I saw him.

I loved that it slipped into that Hellraiser 2 kind of surreal space in the third act where the movie lets itself lose any grip on reality and you just feel unsure and unsettled. I could've actually used another 5 or so minutes of a further slide into the surreal to lose traction but it was great.

8.5/10 for me and I hate most modern horror sadly.

I can agree with that! I basically grew up in the woods near Epping forest, and like you have had a few weird experiences..

The film really hit me on a level I didn't know possible when I watched it in the cinema

It really got me good :messenger_tears_of_joy:

This one was pretty good. A nurse loses her child and you can guess the rest.

Quite grounded and hard to watch at times but good non the less 7/10

Didn't realize there was another horror thread here. I'm going to cross post from the other thread so everyone here can see how much I hate modern horror

2024 horror
*i take back my original rating on Late Night. just compared it to all the other bullshit to come out this year.

on a 10 scale i would give it a 6.5/10

Night Swim - 1.5/5
Watchers - 2.5/5
Abigail - 3/5
The Strangers Chapter 1 - 1.5/5
Tarot - 1/5
The First Omen - 2.5/5
In a Violent Nature - 1.5/5
Maxxxine - 2.5/5
Late Night With The Devil - 3.5/5
A Quiet Place Day One - 3/5
VHS Beyond - 2/5 - not very impressed at all with this but it was watchable
Lisa Frankenstein - 1/5 - awful trash
Spin the Bottle - 1/5 - ^^^^^^^^^
Longlegs - 2.5/5 - I wrote more about this above somewhere
Sting - 3/5 - I thought this was pretty fun
Trap - 1.5/5 - Watchable but not worth the time
Alien Romulus - 2/5 - fuckin hell Fede. Why. Loved ED2013, one of my favorites of all time.
Speak No Evil - 2.5/5 - Original is better, unnecessary
Azrael - 2/5 - Watchable mainly due to Samara Weaving
The Substance - 3.5/5 - Surprisingly interesting, lots of nudity as well
Terrifier 3 - 3.5/5 - Finally, they got it right. First 2 sucked.
Smile 2 - 3/5 - Wife hated it, I enjoyed it fairly well. It was a long movie but I felt the pacing was kind of ok.
Oddity - 3/5 - Just a decent horror movie for once
It's What's Inside - 1.5/5 - Barely watchable, like a wack ass episode of Black Mirror
Monster Summer - 2/5 - Watchable, slow and boring, child acting was pretty bad
Never Let Go - 2.5/5 - Aja's worst movie by far that I've seen (haven't seen Oxygen). Aja is my favorite horror director. This looked average from the start
Heretic - 3/5 - Pretty good, Hugh was nuts. Love to see him as a genre actor more. He was pretty cool in Dungeons and Dragons movie too.
Nosferatu - 1.5/5 - I hated this movie. Nosferatu's voice was hilarious and Ms Depp can't act for shit.

2025 so far:

Bring Her Back - 2.5/5 - I don't get the hype. I thought Talk To Me was very solid, but this...I dunno I just wasn't feelin it.
Clown in a Cornfield - 2/5 - Meh, pretty shit, even for a slasher.
Companion - 3/5 - Pretty interesting, worth a watch.
Death of a Unicorn - 2/5 - Watchable, but not good.
Drop - 2.5/5 - Watchable
Fear Street Prom Queen - 2.5/5 - I remember thinking maybe it was better than the other 3? I dunno I can't remember shit about any of'em honestly.
Final Destination Bloodlines - 3.5/5 - I thought the make believe Sky Tower thing was kind of retarded but the setpiece was cool. I'd put this one at maybe the 2nd or 3rd best FD.
Heart Eyes - 2.5/3/5 - Remember thinking it was okay, been a while.
Sinners - 2.5/5 - Definitely watchable and interesting, solid acting even though I dislike MBJ, he did pretty good in this. They could have done more, and the first half drags.
The Monkey - 3/5 - Kind of like Final Destination but with a cursed object. Entertaining.
Until Dawn - 3/5 - I liked it. Worth a watch.
28 Years Later - 2.5/5 - Watchable, I actually liked the ending. I'd rather the whole movie be like that honestly.
