Of all the systems you have owned, which one were you MOST hyped for?

The last time that happened for a console for me was the Dreamcast. It was the first of that next-generation of console that was such a massive leap forward in 3d graphics from all the limitations of the PS1/N64. It was built-off Windows CE, the memory cards doubled as mini-Game-Boys, had an ethernet jack for playing Phantasy Star Online, a slew of fantastic arcade ports, weird games like Space Channel 5 + Seaman, stylish games like Jet Set Radio, graphical benchmarks like Shenmue, etc.

I know the PS2 was massive, but I wasn't that impressed at the start because some games just struggled to use the emotion engine well, but after the 1st year it was an easy buy for me. Last time I felt any hype was the Xbox 360 because of Gears of War 1 + Xbox Live feeling the a cool step forward for online gaming on consoles.

PS3

2 launch was before my time
PS3 had hype but was a letdown for me because it came long after Xbox 360 and didn't deliver a noticeable leap in power. The big jump had already happened a year earlier.

Same thing with PS2 arriving after Dreamcast. Many games even looked worse on PS2, lots of jaggies and no PAL60 making it quite awful early on in euro land.

Probably Super Nintendo. After popping my gaming cherry with Atari, once I moved to Nintendo and they started talking about SNES, my hype went through the roof. Me and my friends used to walk up to the local shopping center every day to play the SNES kiosk they had at a place called Video Express (family owned Blockbuster type place). It was just so magical. I mowed a lot of lawns that year to save up for it with my parents matching me some on the money. I felt similar with ps5, but Covid fucked that all up and my life went into a tailspin, to where once it released I didn't care much about anything really.

PS3 was indeed hype, and it was an absolute delight hyping myself up, the magazines were there

That ps3 hype was a different level

PSP because playing all these hi-quality games on the go blew my mind.

PS4 because it had Bloodborne and I was a broke university student when it came out so had to wait to start my 1st job to buy the game and consoles.

People saying PS2, I just don't get it. It had like zero games at launch. I got mine, not on launch day but a few weeks later, and then I realized there was nothing to buy for it. I ended up getting Madden and then I looked online and the general consensus was the best launch game was SSX so I went and bought that and it was very good, but I did not feel the hype at all.

I was definitely more Hyped for the Dreamcast the year prior. Soul Calibur was a killer app.

Most hyped for? Might be Dreamcast. I was pretty hyped for Playstation 4 as well, but that was more about how Sony masterfully curb stomped microsoft at E3 that year and not so much the launch games.

GameCube. First console I bought myself. Went out of town early morning with my parents to grab one at the nearest Media Markt.

Nothing will quite compare to the launch madness of the playstation 2, despite the launch games being quite mid in hindsight. I think I got smugglers run, midnight club amd Orphen.

I whitnessed some crazy shit go down at the Electronics Boutique where I bought it from. People were outside in fucking tents, for 2 days leading up to the release. People skipped food to not leave the line, I remember someone had their mum drive to the local greggs and clear out steak bakes and sausage rolls to share with everyone in the line.

Those times are long gone now tbh

Nintendo Switch, the first time I saw it I was shocked at how such a thing could even exist especially after Wii U, and it didn't disappoint what a glorious year 2017 was for games.

PlayStation 2 was insane. I read every single damn video game magazine a hundred times, analyzing every page in detail. The launch was reported in TV news. The console itself looked physically like a space ship. And it had DVD capability. The graphics looked so good.

Any other console after that had nothing like it.

Dreamcast. Was (still is) a great system and ran games almost arcade-perfect. So much originality and there were so many games across so many genres. So many great games.

Playstation 1, my brother and i wanted it for Christmas, got it with Crash Bandicoot 1 and Fifa World Cup 98, what a Christmas Day that was!

Every console post PS1 we traded for it.

PS1. The UK PR blitz that was heavy on Wipeout and Destruction Derby filled me with anticipation. Coupled with the fact that I could see what aleap forward from my SNES it would, at least graphically, be. I also knew that there would be a lot of "arcade perfect" namco games coming soon after launch. Couldn't have been more hyped.

And you know what...it essentially lived up to it.

PS1 hype was real but I hadn't planned to get one straightaway - that was until the guy working in Dixons that day showed me that you could load Ridge Racer, remove the disc, then play your own cds while playing the game. I bought it right there and then.

Nintendo Switch.

My wife bought a refurbished Wii U when we were newlyweds, and I loved it. I know it had its warts, certainly, but the first party library was amazing and the Wii U generation, along with my 3DS, got me back into Nintendo after I spent a long time away from their systems due to life circumstances and college. I'll never forget the launch weekend of Splatoon, or the agonizing wait for Xenoblade X, which ended up meeting the impossibly high level of hype I had carried for it for years.

When NX was announced and the Switch unveiled, I knew Nintendo was going to have a hit on their hands, based on the awesome Wii U first party games, and I was desperately hyped up. It is was the first console I ever pre-ordered for launch, and those seven weeks between the January 2017 Switch presentation and the 3 March 2017 launch date were like...excruciatingly hyped for me. If that makes sense. I felt like Cartman trying to will himself forward through time for the Wii launch on South Park.

And the Switch met the hype, and completely exceeded it for me. My favorite console of all time.

Mario 64 demo kiosk was magic.
That is still the craziest thing I ever tried in gaming. I remember trying Mario 64 in my game store as a kid and almost couldn't believe what I was seeing. I was used to 2D games, and here I was running around on the grass and jumping in the water.

Probably PS2.
Completely relied on parents for it so it also added anxiety. lol

All other consoles after i paid for myself and was in control of my own destiny. I believe for me anyway accessibility and age lower hype these days.

I don't really get hyped, but I really enjoyed getting my N64 on launch day. It was the first console I bought with my own money.

The Super Nintendo had been out for a couple years and my parents found a Nintendo at a pawn shop and a ninja turtles game.

They couldn't afford a SNES, so they got that one. They gave it to me for my birthday and when I out the cartridge in, no power the Nintendo was broke.

It was years later after meeting my wife, that I actually got to play a console at 19 and it was the N64 she had bought for college a couple years back and never used. I played Star Fox 64 and some Toruk game I think with Dinosaurs.

It was the most hyped I had ever been, as I was homeless pretty much 3/4 of my childhood and lived at rest stops on I-95 as the old man would get daily handyman jobs and then after he couldn't find work we'd travel north towards Virginia.

The N64 is most hype for me, but it could just be a bias as I had never played a video game before then.

Easily PS2, hype was through the roof but other than tekken tag and ssx the launch was poor, then 2001 hit like a freight train and the hype was justified

Easily the Dreamcast. and it lived up to the hype. I was generally shocked to find out it wasn't doing well with so many great games in 2 years time.

I was 10 when the 360 launched, and I don't think I've any console launch has ever had that magic again. Kameo and Call of Duty 2 were a lot of fun. Ironically, the DS came out around a similar time and I was also very hyped for that.

  • I was once super excited for PS1, but I actually never got to buy it (couldn't afford at the time).
  • Then it was Xbox 360. I did get that one. MF'er died on me due to RROD.
  • Then it was PS5. Got it 3 months after launch. Loved it the most.
