One Battle After Another | Official Trailer | Leonardo DiCaprio | Benicio Del Toro

I looooove the way PTA uses background music in he's films.

Also that last scene at the end 'thank you sensei thank you! Goddamn it, viva la revolucion!!' :messenger_tears_of_joy:

DiCaprio has become one of my favorite actors over the years. I don't know if he's a method actor or not, but he really nails the personas he's asked to play.

looks decent enough, the only thing is the pregnant strong woman of colour shooting guns and shouting "Daaayuuuum" or whatever she says ... Like oof, very 2020s type writing, I hope that's not indicative of the entire tone of all the "Wacky revolutionists".

but leo can act and so can many others on that list so I'm curious to see more

He did incredibly well even very early on in What's Eating Gilbert Grape.

"Freedom is no fear, just like Tom Cruise" :messenger_grinning_sweat:

The first shot is of an ICE detention center, and within minutes, members of a rogue resistance group known as "French 75" storm it, freeing over 200 detainees. From there, the film sprints into madness.

So we are on to the cringe antifa revolutionary larper worship movies, looks like cringe shit.

Oh, you don't like making fun of those types of pronouns?

Deferential dad saying without a hint of humor, "I just want to be polite" sounds like the furthest thing from taking the piss out of that nonsense.

No, it's pretty obviously not making fun.

Sure felt like it was. Clueless dad not up to date on whatever the latest dumb teen thing is.

Leo is absolutely one of, if not Hollywood's best leading man.

Still boggles my mind how many years it took for him to win an Oscar. Especially so when you look at some of the useless wankers that have won many during the same era as him.

I do wish we had more films with him and Nicholson sharing screen time. Those two can create some fucking magic together.

Its ok bro, nuance is not for everyone. Not every movie can be a safe space like daily caller productions ಥ╭╮ಥ

Seeing a lot of hype for this after it was screened

Got my ticket booked today, can't wait.

I'm looking forward to this one.

The first trailer I saw had an odd energy and vibe to me. It left me unenthused. The second trailer I saw was persuasive - it seemed to convey the actual tone of the film, looked interesting and energetic, and had that PTA energy. Now these early critical reactions are icing on the cake.

It's going to be a heavy month for crime dramas for me this month, given my recent Criterion pick-ups, Caught Stealing which I'll be seeing this weekend, then this later in the month.

Currently in at 98% on RT.

It's early yet so we'll see how it goes but there's definitely a lot of hype to this one. I'm really looking forward to it.

Hard to know if its good even after the reviews cause its PTA.

Critics will hype anything from him, even boring stuff like Inherent Vice or Licorice Pizza and call them masterpieces

And this movie is obviously very political. So I expect opinions about it varrying depending on the viewer political views.

I don't think this is going to be one for people into the culture war. Maybe there will be something that gets spread around that boils their piss. But with it being a movie for adults I think it might go under the radar for a lot of them.

I mean, Eddignton was a movie for adults that was very political and didnt go under the radar

Yeah? I feel like I didn't see that much discussion about it from the culture warriors and it seemed like it kinda passed them by. I didn't see much discussion about it in general for that matter, other than some people on Twitter and stuff on Letterboxd. I remember being kinda disappointed by how little talk there was about it on here. Although there's much less film discussion on here than there was in the past so maybe I was just getting my hopes up.

I thought Ari Aster had me for life with Hereditary and Midsommar. But with Beau is Afraid, he lost me. Beau has the #1 best representation of a stress dream (different from a nightmare) on film with its first hour, in my opinion, but then it just. Kept. Going. Too indulgent and twice as long as necessary.

So I plan to watch Eddington at some point, but I'm not in a rush.

Hope you like it when you get round to seeing it!

The 1st trailer didn't do the movie any favors. The 2nd trailer looks way more interesting with the more serious tone. Gonna check it out on Saturday.

Looks good, more interesting premise than Licorice Pizza.

Licorice Pizza was better than I expected, but PTA rarely misses. Plus, we got coked out Jon Peters:

Fun fact, Jon Peters provided feedback to make the portrayal of him even more insane

Saw it in IMAX

It was weird, in the sense that it's all a bit surreal with both sides being extreme to the absurd, it also runs a bit too long IMO.
Aside from that it was cool, and the constant discordant backing tracks keep you on edge about what's coming next.
Dicaprio's character is also very funny, in a really dry/absurd way.

It's so, so good :pie_savoring:

Bested only by Phantom Threads for best movie in last 10 years IMO

I'm going to see this tomorrow, a midday screening since I'm busy in the evening.
1030-1130 screenings are my fav.

Always a civilized audience, and can follow up with lunch or coffee to discuss movie ☕

PTA releases are so exciting 🤗

It's good - not as great as I thought it would be, but good. PTA nails the pacing, but it feels like this comes at the expense of character development. Many of the characters are interesting, but they're not fully fleshed out, which leaves a lot to be desired. It also feels as though it was written as a series or with a sequel in mind - or perhaps a lot was simply cut out in the editing room.

I liked the satire, dark humour and social commentary. Performances were also brilliant, and as always the sound design is so fucking good. I want to watch it again, I feel like on a second viewing I might enjoy it even more.

I recommend you watch this 👍

I won't spoil anything, just impart some general thoughts:
  • For a drama thriller it has some genuine humor
  • Despite how frenetic it is at times, it manages moments of warmth and never loses its core focus of a story about a father and his daughter
  • Topical in a number of ways
  • If they release a vinyl of this soundtrack I will pay $50 for it day one
  • A solid 5/5
This movie and its cast deserves one Oscar after another.
