Peter Molyneux is making his last game: "....haven’t got the energy left to do this again"

After working in game development for over four decades, Peter Molyneux is calling it quits after he finishes his god game Masters of Albion--that is, if you take his word for it.

Speaking to Edge (via PC Gamer), Molyneux called Masters of Albion his "redemption title," adding: "... it's my last game. It just is."

Masters of Albion is in the works by Molyneux's independent studio, 22cans, which he founded in 2012 after leaving Lionhead Studios. The game, which has players managing a medieval village, currently lacks a release window.

Molyneux, most famous for designing the god game Black & White and the first three Fable games, is perhaps equally as famous for his pre-release hyperbolic and over-enthusiastic descriptions of his games, often leading to disappointment when they fall short of expectations or lack promised features.

To his credit, Molyneux is aware of his tendency to exaggerate, telling Edge: "I know people are going to say, 'Come on, it won't be your last game,' but, you know, I'm 66 years old." The veteran developer, who once said in 2014 that he's "just gonna die" instead of retiring, added: "I'm working as hard as I've ever worked in my life. And I just haven't got the life energy left to do this again."

Everything this person says needs to be divided by two, then the square root extracted, and only after that will it somehow correspond to what will actually happen, and even that is not a fact.

Neither me to play his games

Peter Molyneux, a man well known for sticking to his word.

Joking aside, if he is retiring then I hope he enjoys it. I've enjoyed a bunch of his games over the years.

his god game Masters of Albion
I've had a lot of fun with Black and white and Fable back in the day. People always shit on this guy but I have a lot of respect for him. Creating a legendary game is hard, creating two legendary games is even harder. I'm not a fan of his recent games but I'm adding this to my wishlist. Good luck Peter!

Populous, theme park and dungeon keeper are enough to solidify him as a legend. Those are some great games.
That was 30 years ago, Molyneux's last good game in my opinion was The Movies and after that I'll generally remember him for having cool ideas and not enough resources to translate those ideas into good games. And I'd say that's a mild opinion, some people will probably call him fraud and I wouldn't argue with them too hard. You should be able to tell if your idea is doable or not before you start making promises about your next project.

Don't disrespect Molyneux. If you dont love and cherish his contribution to games in the 90s and early 2000 you are not a real one.

No one gives a fuck if he overdramatized some marketing later on, who gives a shit, he gave us Dungeon Keeper, a glorious game beyond any critique.

If 20 years, people will "who" Miyamoto and Kojima and talk shit about them as well. People who diss Molyneux are like those future ultra-zoomers, you have no respect.

In Finnish, we used to call him Peter "Möly"neux, which roughly translates to Peter "Mucho-ado-about-nothing"neux.

dont insult miyamoto and kojima

Peter should have owned his bullshit over the years and not let the bad press get to him.

He's a fucking legend and created decades of bangers that both defined fucking genres & made their mark on this good for nothing, ungrateful industry.

Retire like a fucking rockstar Peter and "Fuck dem kids!"

Despite his big mouth and some recent flops that made him fell off Molyneux has created some truly excellent games. There is no denying it. He has definitely left his mark on the games industry and some will go to bat for him and say he's a legend. Not many people can earn that respect and claim such a reputation.

Love Pete, will always be excited for his games, to hell with people who get mad at an old man who just really loves games and gets overly excited about them. Sure he shoots off at the mouth, but most of his games have ended up great, despite his hyperbolic nature, so the disrespect to his legacy seems childish and unwarranted to me. Fable is great, one of my all time favs, Fable 2 was tolerable but it's my wife's favorite of the series so that's notable, and Black and White, Syndicate, and Dungeon Keeper are incredible titles.

I'm actually excited for his next project, can't wait to support it.

He did some good games which I always will remember in his early days. But then with Black and White, he just started to talk big instead of making good games. I remember the hype for Black and White and the game was just boring.

Thank God
I literally said this out loud when I read the thread title. I can't stand this guy's pretentious ass games, plus it's not like he's ever made a good one anyways. Same with David Cage.

Thanks for the laugh mate

I'm slightly hyped for this, since it's channeling DK and B&W. Not having a too ambitious scope and not being a graphical power-house indicates development should be okay.

I think a certain breed of gamers hate some game dev personalities more than Putin.

Molyneux is a flawed genius who just bullshitted a bit too much.

Educated yourself with this:

Miyamoto is also living on games he made 30-40 years ago

a AAA management game is what I crave. Founded in 2012 so the guy been working on this for more than a decade.
Now watch him release it in Early Access.

wow the trailer looked bad for 2024

Yeah, he's 66 years old. I wouldn't want to be working hard at that age. Heck, I wouldn't want to be working hard at 50 years old. ;p

I don't blame him a bit. He's had a good career, with some struggles. Time to call it a day.

Why did he have to speak up?

Seriously, just work on the game and release it without putting your name to it.
If it's a good game then you can retire on a high/positive note. Put out a video or press release or whatever saying it was your last game and a joy on, blah blah blah.
If it's crap or poorly received then say nothing.

Molyneux putting his name on it and speaking out just makes people more cautious about a purchase given his huge track record of over-promising and under-delivering.

Stop that nonsense! Populus, Magic Carpet, Dungeon Keeper, Theme Park, Fable 1 & 2 were great games!
The man is full of shit and talked like a snake oil salesman when it came to his later games. His ideas took control of his mouth, but the tech could not keep up. He had no control. He became a cartoon. A meme. But to say that he never produced a good game?
Fucking nonsense!
