Modern Vintage Gamer: The Xbox Situation is not good...

The amount of water that these retards carry for Phil Spencer by laying all the blame for XB's missteps at Satya's and Mattrick's feet is astounding. That's all I have to say about these shills and their views.

Who knows? One day we might find out that Spencer Phil was the hero who protected the Xbox division for as long as possible amid shareholder pressure!

Phil spencer had over 70 billion dollars to use on a spending spree from the microsoft overlords and he managed to fuck the entire brand over and piss away all of that money. He took all of that money and tried buying his way into making gamepass the premier subscription service, but instead he managed to make one the biggest gaming blunders in history by going all in on gamepass. People can shit on don mattrick all they want 'he wasn't good obviously' but he never had the resources that phil spencer had available to him. Phil spencer is a walking embarrassment of a man and the worst gaming CEO ever period.

Seems strange for Xbox to keep releasing dedicated hardware at this point. I think their new focus is gonna be as a publisher, as they're obviously having huge sucess on that front with all their studios.
The Game Pass thing will probably fade away within some time, as the big money is in the publishing business.

I thought about this, and it didn't compute in the end,

Phil saving the Xbox only served to collect more money via marketing to fund a failed business plan. Without him, I would be richer. Bethesda would be a publisher driving to make content YOY for their E3 show, the COD brand would be thriving and not teetering with a double black ops strategy, Sony would have a tighter grip but might have gone straight after Nintendo/PC in a pro consumer war, Halo would have died a hero rather than the villain (or be rebooted by a qualified team years ago), Gears doesn't go woke and then go dark, Titanfall would be an annualized franchise.

We would have been better off if Xbox went away around the time of Tomb Raider exclusive. They didn't get it from then on.

I mean at this point is anyone even considering xbox consoles anymore, releasing new first party hardware at this point would be a terrible business decision.

Shit, if MS actually exists the race it'll be down to Sony and Nintendo forever as I doubt that anyone else will dare to enter the race.
I can see a Chinese megacorp enter the ring at some point. And when that happens, both Sony and Nintendo (but I think primarily Sony) will be under pressure because the Chinese are fairly aggressive and don't play fair (but no megacrop is playing fair nowadays) when it comes to enter markets and get market share.

They'd be establishing a platform from scratch with zero libraries or brand loyalty.

A Chinese company like Lenovo could make some console-form-factor Stream devices, that's it.

I mean, they will have a significant advantage in their home market already if they can get the big Chinese IPs exclusive to their platform. And from there, it's playing the long game.

It's almost like they are acting like we aren't in recession conditions, My theory is that these price increasing are to make the population "think" there isn't recession happening OR They are expecting Trump to push for a major stimmy check and Xbox hopes to capture some of this when people get given 5k stimmy.

It's actually impressive to see a company with such resources and opportunity to throw it all away over stupid reasons because of Microsoft being Microsoft. MVG couldn't have said it better on the waste.

No way, unlikely Valve will ever even release another deck and leave that up to actual HW manufacturers in the future supplying just SteamOS.
Official hardware or not, a good balanced Steambox might be serious competition to Sony, with the free online and much lower game prices.

Yep, most likely option IMO.
I'll stick with Team Japan though.

To be honest it's a never ending sight to witness such failure, lol.
The writing on the wall has been there for years. It started with Xbox One.

But cheering is very short sighted, it is gonna affect the console market alot.

Sony plaers will get the Nintendo treatment of super expensive price hikes because of no competition.

The way I see it is Microsoft just going full third party publishing on other platforms and PC, with me buying the odd game like Fable or other via Steam (and the odd time to sub to Game Pass to play some stuff in a month or two). The rest is Sony and Nintendo for the traditional console platform on those first party titles that I like and want to play Day one (and as a home media box).

That's the synergy and future I see, and as long as the games are still quality and doing well then I am happy.

At that point it's just a PC with SteamOS. Thats fragmentation, there's no cohesive hardware with one user base where you can target development towards. The classic console is dying so as a new actor go into creating a ecosystem is just not happening. MS going multiplat and PS already releasing their games on PC, Nintendo will be the last true hw/sw manufacturer.

I genuinely thought allowing the ABK aquisition was as bad as what we got with Adobe and Autodesk, allowing them to buy up way too much stuff and crippling competition. FTC failed back then and could have potentially failed with this. I thought MS could endanger Sony by pulling everything, except Cod, and then GP finally suceeding. But alas, they skipped the possibility to actually rival Sony, bleeding some more money on the path, and became a probably less but probably still lucrative third party, which in the end isn't great either, since only having Sony, Nintendo and Steam, each in a rather own unique niche, isn't good competition anymore. The handheld space might be fought over after all soon, but consoles seem to be done and probably will get overpriced af as PCs are already.

Microsoft going third party can hardly be noticed as a PC player, as they have been third party to PC for years. You can play Halo, Gears of War etc all on PC.
Now they are just coming to PlayStation as well

From a PC player perspective, games not being locked behind a certain platform is always a win, since PC gaming has no quarrel in the console market.

But Nintendo has upped their prices, both game prices and hardware prices insanely over the few months, because they know people buy their hardware only for their first party titles.

Didnt the games get a price hike to 80 and 90 euros? Thats fucking insane.
And I remember reading news where they also upped the prices of their hardware, even for the original Switch.
I know there are new tariffs and all of that, but still utterly insane price increase.

Microsoft and Sony are/were competiting for the same segment, and Microsoft dragging more and more to the end of Xbox, Sony has shown they dont actually see them as a threat anymore, and up their prices as well.

From a players perspective, no one should ever wish monopoly, as since Nintendo and Sony arent competing for the same market, now has nothing to make them competitive.

Sony has almost release no exclusives this gen, yet PS5 is the most sold PlayStation ever made. Why do the effort on pumping millions on first party games when they can get easy money from just sell third party games?

This gen has shown that is exactly what is happening, and it is only going to get worse.

The only place Nintendo is aggressive is on PC front, but that is because there are people working on making Nintendos games work on PC. That is the only competition Nintendo has.
And Nintendo are using more money sueing game developers and people than actually spend money on making exclusives.

I read a pretty good quote somewhere, stating "Nintendo is a law firm that just happens to make computer games".

One game, that everyone gets as a pack-in with the console and in reality sells for 70 or less.

And I remember reading news where they also upped the prices of their hardware, even for the original Switch.

Yes, all manufacturers did, there's basically a worldwide recession taking place (hidden with the AI bubble) with crazy levels of inflation, tariffs etc. not Nintendo being meanies.

That's a terrible quote, they have the greatest gaming IP and protect it, the protection is only because of the 40 years of creativity.

You're right. Just checked amazon.com, majority of games are 70 or less.

Afaik Steam hasn't with Steam Deck. And the Steam Deck isn't even a walled garden.

Yet they are sueing Palworld because it slightly a Pokemon game on PC/Xbox/PlayStation.

And because that somewhat failed, they have now patented 40% of gameplay mechanics.

I am not just talking piracy here. but basic mechanics and ionsane amount of patenting.

Spencer has no clue about what makes a quality game. They pull the wool over his eyes and he has no idea. He thought the vampire game to be good, he thought halo infinite was quality, etc etc, the list goes on.

This is the opposite of what Sony has or at least had, the uncanny ability to spot talent and quality - like a sport scout in their relative field.

Now however Herman…..🤷‍♂️

It would be really weird if Microsoft did abandon the hardware market with Xbox to become a publisher only like SEGA. I loved the Dreamcast, it was a gem of a console in my opinion that desrved better but I always remember thinking when I got the original Xbox how much it felt like the Dreamcast 2, especially with all the awesome support from SEGA in the early days.

The original Xbox really was amazing for its time, Microsoft were new to the market and as well as incredible hardware (1080i support for HD TVs! A hard drive! Online gaming! Custom soundtracks for games!), which in my opinion put the PS2 with its ugly jagged visuals to shame. It had lots of exclusive games, including Microsoft branded sports games. Not all the games were great but Microsoft were highly experimental back then, throwing everything at the wall so see what stuck, and not afraid to take risks. The console was relatively short-lived but it produced some memorable first-party exclusives even outside of Halo and Forza Motorsport. Blinx: The Time Sweeper, Quantum Redshift, Oddworld: Munch's Oddysey, AMPED 1 & 2, Racing Evoluzione, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Voodoo Vince, Project Gotham Racing (following on from Dreamcast's Metropolis Street Racer), Crimson Skies and so many others. It was a wonderful time to be alive. The Xbox became my console of choice which carried on right through to the Xbox 360 era (and six consoles due to the infamous red ring of death issue!).

It saddens me so much that the Xbox has become this unexciting, negative console platform but the writing was on the wall as far back as the Xbox One. Never have I been so disappointed with a launch platform than I was with the Xbox One. Still, didn't last too long as PS4 launched exactly a week later and replaced Xbox as my go-to console for games.

Not sure what Microsoft / Xbox can do to change things at this point. I think the damage is irreversible and the best course of action would be to abandon the hardware market for good and just focus on making and publishing great games on all platforms, like SEGA did to great success.

Yeah, one OTT patent does not mean they're a law firm.

Yup. And now people are trying to deflect blame from Phil, pin it all on Satya, Amy Hood, whoever. I'm not defending the latter, but these are Phil's chickens coming home to roost.

I love how Gaf loves to beat a dead horse.

Xbox death is completely overshadowing any other news.

You think it's just GAF? You see these stories everywhere. Why? Because we're living through an important part of videogame console history right now.

Plus, it's fun to watch.

People would not be printing stuff if they weren't hearing it from inside the building. Usually this time lag is simply the company trying to get their affairs in order.

When that AMD announcement came out I said that this doesn't actually mean that new Xbox consoles were going to come out, Microsoft can and will cancel if new information comes out or the situation changes.

It's much less weird than Microsoft getting into the hardware market.

They were always a software company and even when Xbox was successful, some investors/shareholders were saying they s hould divest and get out of that market because it is a poor fit for them. But really, what 25 years on the market, how many of those years were successful? Six or seven? The results speak for themselves.

Yeah, one OTT patent does not mean they're a law firm.
They've patented things like how you throw the ball, how the animals are entering battle etc.

It's like if a company patented first person view, being able to jump in a shooter, and having patent on using a pistol.

I was really hyped for XB at the start of the generation. They had so many studios and games along the pipeline. Then there were long stretches of nothing, and a lot of the games that did come out were bad. I wonder how things may have went if Halo Infinite was available at launch and was also a top of the line game. Instead it got laughed at, delayed and ended up just being ok. Kind of set the tone.

Phil has done a lot worse for the Xbox brand than Don...but no one is ready to talk about it.

Gamepass + Activision deal alone were much worse than "Kinect everywhere + always online". The thing is one was felt much quicker (Don's mistakes) while Phil's mistakes have taken quite a bit to be felt.

Even with all the mistakes, Xbox One still sold quite a lot on its main markets. But teaching your audience that buying games wasn't needed, and then buying Activision for 70b made sure MS wouldn't just give Phil the long leash anymore, which he had before.

It's so weird to see "good guy Phil" PR that happened for years is still felt nowadays.
