I'm a fan of trun bass RPG myself, Persona 5 introduce me to this is genre.

But do you guys think expedition 33 is the best game in this decade as some people say, or those just soulborne lunatic crowd talking? lol.
I cannot compare this game to Persona 5 or metaphor refantazio maybe just in Music.

or maybe I just too old for this shit, as I too old for tiktok and Instagram shit.

BTW, I have played tons of Soulsborne games and finished them. I do know how to parry.
 
Expedition 33 is better. The music is perhaps best in a game. Turn based combat and difficulty are perfect. I'm a fan of Metaphor, got the plat on P5g, don't enjoy Yakuza. Keep playing. E33 goes back to games like FFVII and FFX to draw inspiration. What issues are you having with the game? I encourage everyone to play it. Especially those who hate turn based. It will change your mind. By the end the story is better than tlou1.

Also, the voice acting is only rivaled by BG3 and may even be better. The music…. The French aesthetics also invited me into a world I have never known. Few other games do this. The graphics are wonderful. The way the game is done is with a fine touch in every aspect. There is also no filler. Filler is a huge ruiner of many other JRPG's. This game has zero filler, not even 1/2 a second of any filler.

never played it .......... but no it is super horrible boring cutscene fest as overrated as the Louvre and Eiffel Tower combined... makes me want to put a striped shirt , black barrett, and act out that im struggling in a wind storm of awfulness.

I did not like the E33 combat system. I don't want parryshit in my RPG. But the story, presentation, waifus, all 10/10. Didn't think the music was all that.

The Music was very very good but in other aspects, it's just OK game NOT a masterpiece.
 
BG3 and Pathfinder:WotR are the best turn based RPG's of the last decade. Not a huge fan of this japanese style turn based games where everybody stands a in a circle and makes his move. It takes away the whole "positioning" strategy aspect.
 
I got a question for turn based peeps, as someone that's always hated turn based games but actually like Expedition 33 with it's active parries and what not, what turn based games are similar when it comes to active gameplay?

Just picking options from menus the entire time just isn't for me.
 
Clair 33 is the game of the generation for many reasons. One of them is that is revolutionised the "stale and old" turn based RPG system, by adding the dodge and parry real time mechanic. Having a lot of time to think about offence and defend in real time was an epic decision and led to a combat style that changed everything.
The game for gamers and non gamers alike, for RPG fans and non RPG fans.
 
What made it tolerable for me was that you can dodge + parry literally every attack in the game. Usually the "stand there and take turns hitting each other" style of turn-based JRPG combat bores me to death. This one involved just enough skill to make it fun and keep it interesting.
 
No, Expedition 33 is not the best turn based game, lol. People saying this are usually people who avoid turn based games to begin with, and this is one of the few ones they have played in years.

But Persona 5 Royal is absolutely a significantly better turn based RPG than Expedition 33 is. Final Fantasy Tactics is better (although to be fair, also a whole lot older). You can make a case for Yakuza: Like A Dragon being better. Baldur's Gate 3 is certainly significantly better.

Expedition 33 is a great game, but it has been overhyped to an incredible degree by its fanbase.

Dropped it after 20 hours. Honeslty when I see people referring it as the "best JRPG" my thoughts go to "this person hasn't played a lot of JRPGs".

I found it to be dull and poorly designed.

For example, this right here is proof of what I am saying. Saying Expedition 33 "revolutionized" the genre by doing something that turn based RPGs have been doing for 30 years before Expedition 33 even released.
 
Story, characters, world, graphics, and gameplay were all very good in rarely done ways. Not unique but rarely done.
It excelled on all fronts and launched at a price point that really made everything it offered even more appealing.

It's a top tier game and deserving of all the praise it gets.

Other games have come out that are really just as good but not in some of the areas I mentioned. The overall package wasn't as great as 33.

So your argument falls apart right away.

It could be, and you know this, it just didn't click with you. Like I don't like Witcher 3 and I've tried many times to get into it. Loved Witcher 2. Sometimes a game can be celebrated by many and for whatever reason it isn't for you and that's ok.

Dismissing it with the argument you used is disingenuous lol.
 
It's a nice fresh air added to the old turn based genre, but you are making things up saying people love it as best rpg because of its combat.

For turn based combat to be fun, the system has to offer ingenuity for synergy and depth. 33, persona, Yakuza 8 all doing well in this regard.

(also: i personally haven't played expedition, & wasn't a fan of either persona 5 or metaphor - okay games, but neither really more than that. so, yes, tastes do change...)

JRPG is a vast genre with many different approaches as you know.

What games do you prefer ? It's a matter of personal taste, it always is.

I really loved the game and don't see why it couldn't be one of the best "JRPG" released.

My point is the majority of the people who says this game is a masterpiece is not big fan of jrpg or trun based genre.
 
playing Metaphor after Ex 33 earlier this year and it's a snoozefest in comparison

And while Metaphor has good music, ex33 music is way more memorable IMO.



Metaphor actually kind of stinks IMO. SMT:V was better. Way better combat.

I didn't made any argument, I just stated my opinion.

I'd already disclosed my argument several times but here's for another one: the battle system makes no damn sense. You have tons of pictos, many different skills and even elemental weaknesses all of that resulting in a lot of "build-making" potential. Yet guess what, I played on hard and beat the entirety of Act 1 playing each combat in the exact same way: set enemy on fire, mark enemy, girl goes into virtous stance, deals a ton of damage rinse and repeat. That shit is whack. Also why would I bother with the pictos and different skills and shit when I can nullify all the damage? Makes no sense.

At least Paper Mario had a similar combat system yet managed to keep it interesting thanks to a clever encounter and boss design.

Witcher 2 is miles better than Witcher 3. The open world did a diservice to the 3rd entry turning it from a well paced RPG into a padded collectathon with a map filled with ? markers. Fuck that shit. Also the story was more interesting in 2.

Games that are well designed that make me to engage with their mechanics in a meaningful way. For example, if I played SMT V without engaging with the negotiation and fusing mechanics the game would fuck my ass. Meanwhile I can't say the same about COE33 because the parry overshadows every other aspect of the game.
 
I'm a huge fan of traditional jrpgs and I've been playing them most of my life. This is too French for me to enjoy tbh. Not a fan of the parrying and dodging either.
 
I tried Expedition 33 and it was good but I don't understand why people hail it as one of the best games/RPGs ever made. The only thing that it does outstandingly better than its contemporaries is that it's not as fucking bloated as, let's say, Metaphor or Persona 5:R . But Atlus' "press-turn" turn-based system just flows and feels better, imho. And if you are in the flow, it almost feels like playing an action game. To me at least. It feels like playing Tetris: You set up your party and attacks in a way that keeps the enemy from getting a turn (which is feels like getting a Tetris after setting up your blocks right). Metaphor evolved this by letting you just literally slice through weaker enemies (and fill up your MP or heal your party, if you've got the right archetype on your main). I feel that Atlus' games are better designed in that way. And BG3 is just on another level, especially if you like the older Ultima games. You can literally cheese the game or certain encounters with the weirdest idea. And it often works. Climbing up to an area you are not supposed to be yet by stacking shit up that you find? Sure. You know that shit is about to go down fairly soon in this area? Just get every explosive barrel that you can find and place them strategically around. I do like the writing and music in Expeditions 33 more than in BG3, though.

Expedition 33 is not a bad game and a good base to grow from for their next game. Is it the best turn-based RPG of all time? Well, at least to me, it isn't. It's not even in my top 10.

No, it most certainly isn't. E33 is good, but being blown way out of proportion for being praised as if it redefined the genre; just like Hollow Knight and Metroidivanias. Having played RPGs since the 80's there are a multitude of other RPGs with just as engaging, deep and addicting gameplay/combat that have done it better (in certain aspects) decades prior. Not to cop out, but there's too many to list. If you really love turn based, do the research; it's worth it. There's generations of classics that won't disappoint and will surprise you.
 
Claire Obscure is a fantastic game that I had been graving for a long time. I can't stand weeb shit, so to finally have a turned based based game with a proper story was the perfect storm for me. Usually, if I play a turned based game, I have to skip the dialogue because it is so cringy and off-putting, so I end up not getting the most out of the game. This game had a brilliant story, fantastic soundtrack, and amazing gameplay.
 
I haven't played E33 yet but I recommend Dragon Quest XI if you want a great classical JRPG with modern amenities. Octopath 2 is great as well.

Expedition 33 is my favorite JRPG.
It's not perfect, of course, and there are other games that do certain things better. But as a whole, when you combine the combat, world, music, characters, story and writing I like it better than every other JRPG I've played.

The only turn based system I think is as good or better is what Larian has been doing with the Divinity Sin games as well as BG3. The level of flexibility and player freedom that they offer blows every JRPG out of the water.
 
It is good for what it is, a big Turn based rpg made by a little studio. But i find the game really overhyped and in no way GOTY material (for me atleast). The music is S teir though love the soundtrack
 
As a fan of turn-based games, I dislike active elements in combat. So yes, I disliked the parry and dodge nonsense.

However the game is amazing despite that. It has a great story, interesting cast of characters, an overworld like the old FF games, and bunch of different areas to explore. And the combat shines for me due to the extensive and varied lumina system, which can allow you to kill enemies without them getting a turn (thus allowing you to not deal with active combat elements at all).

So yeah, it's a great RPG but would have been even better if they didn't include the active elements in combat.

I only played about 10 hours and thought the music was hit or miss. I'm with you on the combat system and I do roll my eyes at tearjerker beginnings like found in E33 or Ori.

Not liking the Witcher 3 should be against the law and punishable by hanging. Spent 100 hours on that gem and still have not touched the DLC'S which many say is better than the base game.
 
I'd have it at least in contention for best game of the past decade for me personally.

It's more like an incredible game which happens to sort of be a turn-based game though, rather than an incredible turn-based game... if that makes sense. If someone loves turn-based games primarily for the turn-based gameplay, they could quite easily not enjoy Exp33.

Similar? The first two Paper Mario games.

Other games with active inputs during battle, but different: Vagrant Story, Valkyrie Profile, Super Robot Taisen OG Saga Endless Frontier, Resonance of Fate.
 
Ex 33 is the GOAT and one of the best games of the year.
However, you're asking about turn based games specifically. In this regard, no, it's not the best.
As mentioned above, the parry mechanic is OP. Another thing - there's not much strategy in the combat. Well, except the final true boss where I seriously needed to rethink my picto setup and come up with a plan.
Compare it to FFX, in that game, I thought much more about what to do in the combat encounters with the different bosses. It required some level of strategy that Ex 33 simply doesn't.

Witcher 3 is written and performed well, but the combat system and open world are by-the-numbers making them serviceable vehicle for the story. It's one of the more overrated games in recent memory.

After playing Souls games for a little while, the combat in the Witcher 3 def feels off to me and then there's all the spells you gotta do. I want to get back into it, mainly for the DLC.
