Tron: Ares | Official Trailer

RIP Tron series, again

Maybe Disney will try again in another 20 years

Probably thread worthy but no one cares about Tron so whatever

I just don't understand why you bring back the IP and make all the wrong corporate decisions besides music.

I know the 2010 movie is considered "bad" but I think it's awesome, and obviously the OG is an "of its time" movie.

But why resurrect a failed franchise only to have 0 passion towards the project? This almost felt like a tax write-off. I was very disappointed with the movie.

What even is TRON these days? For the original, the notion of life inside a computer was quite novel. But now we've had Reboot, Wreck it Ralph, and COUNTLESS other versions of that theme. So just the "programs are alive!" bit is insufficient. You see they still cling to the visual aesthetic of light cycles and disc's, but haven't really innovated into new aspects of how humans interact eith their computers. No notion of cell phones, mobile games like candy crush, dealing with the struggles of recovering passwords, solving captchas, all sorts of things modern audiences could relate to with computing devices they could fold into a basic adventure story.

Disney fucking sucks. The only smart person in that company is the person that uttered 'Let's get NIN'.. at the pitch meeting.

Oh for the record I quite liked Ares, watched it in IMAX which probably helped quite considerably.
Watched it in IMAX last night and liked it as well. Same concern I have with most movies these days. Trailer for the movie explained the entire movie. Never understood why studies do this.

Throw enough money there way I'm sure they would have done it

Liked it a lot, luckily Jared just has to be his Stony self which fit the script. Have nothing bad to say about it, the effects and music rocked!

i thought this may have decent word of mouth considering it has had good audience scores but looks like the 2nd week drop is projected to be 65% which is pretty bad.

They were offered millions for only a single show at some festival. They dont care, they are already millionaires. Not to mention when RAM came out, they didnt even bother to tour that album or make a surprise appearance anywhere. They dont give a fuck, and I like it.

Jared Leto aside, Tron franchise does not have a huge fanbase to begin with aside from some millenials/boomers. Im glad we got a new one, will rewatch the trilogy again once Ares hits the tv.

Ready Player One type 'fan service' is probably the more mass appeal way to leverage video game franchises. Tron's iconography is more rooted in the older games. I don't know how well you could translate a FPS into Tron, but they could have had some fun with tower defense type stuff. That Adam Sandler video game flick kinda stole some of the possibilities as well, it did a good job with pac-man, centipede, and the like.

I really liked the movie. I watched it with my wife in the 4DX and it was a fun experience.

Recommend people to watch it. It's a decent movie

Saw this last weekend and enjoyed it (enough). I am a die hard Tron fan (particularly the 1st film) and was never really too keen in this one, for the usual expected reasons; however there was no way a new Tron film was going to be in the theater and I wasn't going to see it (unless all the press actually said "it is terrible, worse than anything else ever, absolutely stay away 1000%).

Not a great film, maybe not even good, although I didn't find it offensive and it did enough well to keep me invested. I love NIN and wasn't sure that they were going to be the best match for this film, but in hindsight I love what they did. Keeping the action mostly in the real world seems to be ruffling a ton of people's feathers, didn't actually mind that as it is something a bit different for the franchise and that's not a bad thing.

If they made Athena a little smarter/deadlier this might have worked better. I can understand that they were going for spectacle and trying to stay within budget, so I guess this was how it was going to go (it would be great if modern filmmakers could operate much like their counterparts did years ago, "let's find a way to make things work with what we've got/less is more" than the whole machine gun at a molehill thing they've got going now, but I am certain unless you are a VERY established filmmaker like Nolan or Bay, you have to just color within the lines that the higher-ups are going to decree.

Anyway as a mega-fan of the 1982 film in particular, there was one part which surprised me which I felt was "just put in there for me" and that was a very pleasant discovery. That bit ended up falling a bit flat, if there was some cool battle or real exposition sequence there it could really have just made the film for me honestly - I'm partially of the mind to inquire about "what incredible parts did they cut from what could have been this amazing sequence" VS "better off not knowing since it will just make me disappointed that it didn't make the cut," but for what it is worth, I do appreciate (enough of) what we got.

As for the leads - like everyone else I was never jazzed about Leto, not even remotely, although I do recognize(r) that he was the driving force to get the film made & without him, this would likely have never turned up at all. I think it worked well enough, and his character did really NOT ruin the film in any way. I wish they did give him a different look that would have tracked more appropriately to the film, cut his hair and give him a shave (yeah I am well aware that his look is very much his brand, still it was distracting). His arc was a little funny and felt like it needed a bit more of a bridging, but I accepted it.

Eve Kim was another story. I didn't mind her in the role, and she did fine enough with what she had to work with, but man.. between this actress (Greta Lee) and Garrett Hedlund as Sam in the previous film, each of these leads felt a bit like they were more "along for the ride" rather than leading the film, her noticeably more so. They could have given her a bit more to do to flesh out her character, SOMETHING, she just felt kind of like an afterthought. A lot of the decisions for the production felt rushed.

I very much want to catch the film in the theater again, in 3D since I hear it's a more profound way to enjoy the film, hopefully I'll get a chance to do that before it is out of the theater - I have a very strong sense (yet again) that this will be the last time in my life to see a modern Tron film on the big screen in such a grand fashion, or at least the last time it will still be any kind of accessible to the type of film I'd want to see. I still feel like it is kind of a let-down following what Legacy setup, but in the week since viewing it, it has grown on me. Every Tron film, always an underdog.

OT, and I know she is retired for a very long time now, but I wonder whatever became of Wendy Carlos. For me, the first film and its soundtrack are so inseparable in the ways they have touched me. I loved the Daft Punk score for Legacy and, as mentioned, the new NIN score/soundtrack worked for me as well, but Wendy's whole thing was just so otherworldly, so magical, so strange. I would love to hear what kind of work she would come up to collaborate with these newer films (or at the very least, those who are descended from/directly inspired by the style of the audio worlds she concocted so many years ago). It is something that is often brought up maybe as a footnote when these films are discussed, but to me - and many others - her work, the soundscapes are just so critical to properly capturing the essence of what makes these films so effective. Hopefully, she is able to look back at her involvement with the original film and feel some amount of that appreciation even today.

OK TLDR part - if you are any kind of a real Tron fan, please see this film in the theater while you still can. The nerds have (again) really dropped the ball here "it is not exactly what I want, therefore I don't want to see it at all". The movie isn't great but it is a fun ride. If this truly signifies the end of the Tron franchise, that's a disappointment, but I'd still rather watch it die like this rather than suffer true Modern Disneyfication the way that Star Wars and Marvel currently are. In such a case I am satisfied to leave my beloved Tron franchise dead and buried in the past, with its relative dignity still intact.

Pretty well actually. Tron 2.0 was amazing.

As a game, sure, I mean conceptually within the tron universe in film, like pong for the discs and pole position for the light cycles. Take well know game experiences for us and show them from the npc perspective but not quite in a 1:1 translation. Reboot, the old CG cartoon, kinda hammered this to death though.

Finally, a movie made for 3D. It's astonishing in IMAX 3D. Ridiculously good visuals and sound. I got dizzy, which I never do. When the Recognizer shows up it feels like the theatre is collapsing!

Also, it's the best Tron movie, simply because it's not boring as fuck.

Seriously regretting not catching this in IMAX 3D! That's what I get for letting my friend get the tickets, oh well..

Went to watch this again last night (3D, not IMAX sadly). Actually enjoyed it a lot more on the second viewing. I have low expectations, but another film to tie up the loose ends would be great! Alas, feels very much like Disney sent it out to die, so I am not going to get my hopes up. Thinking of this as a "World of Tron" side-story makes it a lot more satisfying, I think..

Gotta be real with myself: Not a huge fan of Tron as in their stories, but fuck me, the visuals and music have been killing it since the beginning. Seems to continue onwards. Worth it for that alone.

So I'm watching this on D+ and GOD DAMN I'm sooooooooooo fucking mad I missed this in theater. It's a dumb movie but it looks and sounds SO GOOD. Whoever shot this is a genius. The reznor soundtrack is dope, just bought the vinyl.

Anyway, it doesn't really feel like a Tron film but is gorgeous and really fun.

I saw the movie and it's a good movie. It has a good soundtrack, the story is entertaining, and it has good sound and special effects. I liked it and I'd give it an 8 rating.

It has some nice Easter eggs.

I think it's an underrated movie because of Disney's track record, but this one was an exception.

I would have liked to see it in IMAX.

But Tron Legacy, with its 3D format, is one of the best 3D cinematic experiences I've ever seen.

I feel like it's underbaked in concept and execution. Hollywood gets so lazy with these "boy genius" characters and the "longevity code" thing was a TERRIBLE macguffin. It looked great and if you didn't think too much it was fun, but it has some really bizarre elements. Like those light trail quarterstaff things, much less the gliders, how exactly do they work? And for a fight they never really explored the tactics of weaving a force field around you as you spin the staff. I did like the stuff with the fighter jets. But ultimately it was "I look cool in slo-mo" with very little in actual kinetic choreography.

But the notion of digital beings desiring the chaos and tactile sensations of the real world is a cool one. But I just wish it was more cerebral in concept (like The Great Flood I alluded to in that thread), spending less time on the chase parts.

It was good but the soundtrack and atmosphere considering its age is miles ahead in Tron Legacy. I rewatched all of them in the same day. Daft Punk are just legendary. The reznor soundtrack didnt click with me at all, felt out of place with almost all scenes, whereas Daft Punk clearly made their music to fit the scenes perfectly. To be fair they are electronic music gods. Other than that Jared Leto played better than I expected, but I never had any issues with his acting.

I would just say (after watching it last week) that if you want to continue a franchise, maybe hire leads that have more than 2 or 3 expressions?

At one point, Eve is looking at ARES with what I'm guessing was supposed to be wonder, but all her face displayed was "disgust." It didn't fit, the actors didn't work (maybe that's a director problem) and you have a TRON movie without -- TRON.

Now, maybe this was supposed to be a bridge to bring the old guard back (I doubt it), as SARK was obviously "resurrected" in the end -- but ... damn. Just a wasted opportunity.

That Eve actress has almost ZERO expression. Either just the way she looks or she's botoxed to near immobility, her face has less range than a rubber mask. Very much the wrong person to hang the film on, especially when paired with "ultra chill" Leto. Poor industrial magnate boy had to do allllll the emotional heavy lifting as even Scully was overly cool and calm.

Agreed. Evan Peters was having fun in this film, and he was the only energy it had. Even the Acolyte actress was able to convey expression, even being a "program." I have to say, Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde are probably laughing at how (poorly) this did. What a waste of a franchise.

My wife: "I liked it." ... Oh, OF COURSE you did.

And another movie with a post-credits sequence that will likely never be addressed.
ah shit, I think I was drunk by then, don't even remember what it was.

I did like those security babes, damn. And the all too brief disc fight, wish there was more of that. I want that Tron cycle as well.

Was hoping Tron actually came back in this.

Ares wasn't bad, not as good as the second movie. I don't think I'd be as interested next time if Sam is not in it, which by the ending, should be the case, if they make it.

Pretty LTTP on Tron Ares, thought it was the most bland phoned in writing/acting/everything. Like a lot of movies now they just went all in with we-can-turn-nostolgia-into-a-full-multiyear-franchise without any effort.

Also, as an 80's kid I am beyond tired of the trope of LOOK IT'S A RUBIK'S CUBE SO 80's. The Depeche Mode reference fell so fucking flat they didn't even use the song anywhere else in the movie, even as a remix. I expected more from the music as well which was just meh. I guess Trent Reznor IS 60 and just took the easy paycheck.

Yeah, as much as people want to shit on Leto, I thought he did a great job in his role. The actress for Eve destroyed nearly every scene she was in.
