The next-gen [Xbox] console is going to be a very premium, very high-end curated experience: Sarah Bond

Actually not surprised with current Xbox policy, over 1000$ for nextgen box probably 1500, subsidized xbox hardware is officially ended

$1500 Microsoft gaming device that performs as well as a $2100 Microcenter shopping cart of parts?
And lets me play games like BF6 with cranked graphics and against only other console players and avoid the PC crowd?

Soooo... build a very premium (read: expensive) device, while your major selling point (Gamepass) just got a major price hike, not likely come down any time soon?

I guess that's a business strategy. It worked for Cartmanland. For a time.

Probably an overpriced box with numbers that would be meanless for anybody except its fans. I can already see the stupid teraflops drama all over again.

"You're starting to see some of the thinking we have in this handheld, but I don't want to give it all away."

You gave it away Sarah, you gave it away.

They never recovered from the Xbox One debacle where the PS4 was 50% more powerful. And the PS5 still got better version of games.

Since 2013, you guys are getting a hardware inferior to your competition.

The Xbox One X was the best console in the world from Late 2017- Late 2020

I'll always remember what a great job they did with that system near the end before the series consoles ran the xbox brand into the ground

A console that can switchblade into a Steam/Windows rig would be pretty freaking cool, and probably pricey. Sounds rad.

Sony better stop fucking around and bring it with the PS6. That thing better launch with Wipeout!

I'm already sitting at $600~ in Reward balance.

I think some folks are understating how the prospect of a 'hassle free' PC storefront experience can be appealing to users as well.
I agree with you and it's part of the reason why despite having gamed on PC for my entire gaming life (as in for as long as I've been playing games since I was a little kid in the late 90s) I still play on consoles and spend my time pretty equally on both if not a little more on consoles. I just prefer the simplicity BUT honest question

At what point is it not worth it anymore? Like Xbox is obviously going the more bespoke high end route which lets them stay in the hardware game while also dropping out of the normal console "race" with Sony and that is obviously going to be expensive.

Let's say this new device costs $1200 but really only has the performance of a $800 PC. Is that really still worth it to you? Would it not just be better to buy the next PlayStation or build a PC?

I really don't understand this from a functional standpoint vs a regular windows gaming PC. After 2016 all Xbox games had a simultaneous PC release. If you're just buying this to play pre 2016 Xbox games it seems like a massive waste of money.

What exactly is the unique selling point of this unsubsidized device vs your average gaming PC?

They wont release a new console ever. XBOX is going to be an OS. OEMs will sell PCs having it preinstalled to run in a living room. Nothing more, nothing less.

Very premium, very high-end? These are the dudes charging $800 in 2025 for an Xbox Series X.

Most likely, the most "premium" aspect of whatever they put put will be the price.

If $800 isn't a premium price and product to them today, what will be in 2026?

The next-gen [Xbox] console is going to be very expensive because we're done losing money on each console so we'll try to market it as premium to justify the price.

Microsoft realized that the market is not accepting its product and is taking a page of Nintendo with the Wii, find a new market. In this case it's going for Apple market of extremely expensive products. Yes, it will go fine.
Microsoft is no Apple, not even close. They could only dream that Windows was as competent/stable/fast as their competitors.

Microsoft also has terrible brand image and marketing. It's not even close.

Isn't it the opposite?

Magnus is supposedly targeting a high spec system with an RDNA 5 GPU, what $800 PC will come close to that in 2027.

Is that entirely true though?
The Xbox One X was more powerful, better made, and IMO better looking than the PS4 Pro. That power also translated to games.

The Series X is also technically more powerful than the PS5 but the problem seems to be that it doesn't always translate directly to games. I heard this second hand on Sacred Symbols but I think Tom from MLiD said there's an inside joke within AMD that is essentially "Microsoft has engineers? lol"because the Series X is more "off the shelf" while the PS5 was more tailor made for games which is why a lot of times the PS5 can make up the difference despite being less powerful.

It can compete against enthusiast level PC, those are not many. It has zero chances against both next-gen PS (at roughly half the price) or mass market PC (those used multipurpose).
PCMR tends to heavily overestimate HTPC market

MS discontinued XoX almost 1.5 years before XS launch - so much for the "best console"
Best ones are the ones that are sustainable - i.e. a good value for both players and platform holders. Shit that sent to die because 5 people buy it and enjoy heavily subsidized value are not like that.

No, I chose Xbox because in its early stages...mainly Xbox/360 days...the hardware was superior for multiplatform games. The exclusives were a plus.
No sane person who supported OG Xbox/360 would support the corporation who destroyed the brand and its mascot Master Chief's game.

Also the multiplatform thing was not always sunshine in Xbox. The 6th gen GTA games were superior on PS2.

Many Japanese games like Tales of Vesperia and Eternal Sonata got extra content in PS3. PS3 versions of many games like FF XIII and Catherine had better cutscenes as they were compressed in 360. GTA V looked better on PS3 due to superior textures.
Splinter Cell Blacklist had superior textures on the PS3 disc than 360 disc. For 360 you had to install HD textures DLC to have textures as good as PS3. Now that 360 online is gone, you have the superior version in PS3 only.

It was all on case by case basis.

No, I don't agree with the prospect that it'll be equivalent to a cheaper PC.

It most likely will be if they are to go the route of hardware BC.

You're going to have to pay for that specialised chip that takes care if your existing library.

They need a box to keep the dotards paying them for the privilege of using their own internet connection to play online games. If everyone just goes PC they completely lose that revenue stream.

I'm surprised there are still people on this forum who rationally choose to support this kind of device.

Other than that, I still bet with all my strength that they'll simply give up on any hardware idea before this thing even launches. And if by some miracle it actually does, I give it a maximum of two years before production is shut down.

There's no future for Xbox with the ridiculous way Microsoft has been handling things.
