The Outer Worlds 2 hits 18,251 all-time CCU peak on Steam

Honestly the choices, dialogues etc so far seem much improved from first. Visually I would say it is bit of downgrade because its very heavy and is relying on RT to make everything look better. I dont know how this and Avowed came from same studio, they lrobably left all untalented ones to shit out Avowed.

Day of the official launch,

4 hours until release and still at #12

I've changed my tune a tad on this, I'm happy that people are enjoying it, and there isn't a bunch of woke shit (allegedly). I still don't care for their studio at large, so if it finds some success, maybe it will steer the company off the path they were going down. And if it doesn't, I'll just assume the sons are paying for the sins of the father.

The flood gates have opened baby lets gooooooooo
Has the game already released (not EA)?

Edit: It released 20 minutes ago. I expect it to peak at around 20K over the weekend. If it does not, well, MS should have slapped the Fallout label on this thing and marketed it appropriately.

So do you have to have played the first to play this? I have the original free from somewhere or other but never even installed it.

Those of us who possess a hint of the tism know it doesn't matter if a game releases in the middle of the day, in the middle of the week. If there is an audience clamoring with anticipation to buy a game, it's going to launch to decent numbers out of the gate.

Don't forget the dozens of BNet purchasers!
I'd imagine the number of people buying it on Xbox and BNet are probably higher than usual, considering how cheap it is on those platforms. It's full price (or near enough on Steam) but you can pick it up for $55 on those stores. Despite that, most sales would be on Steam between the three stores on PC.

I'm having issues with the game on Steam. Will get moments where the frame rate tanks badly then seems to correct itself BUT, whilst playing it yesterday, the frame rate tanked hard then I had a crash that booted me to the desktop. Really loving the game but unsure what the fuck they've done to make this shit happen. And no, I'm not playing on shit hardware. It's on a 4070ti super with DLSS on set to performance at 4k. Easily runs this game 98% of the time except for these exceptions. Strange shit.

You guys are so caught up in pretend console wars that you are not even noticing that normal games are becoming less popular. My kids are in the 5 th grade and I hear about nothing but what new events are happening in Roblox and Fortnite.
To be fair my son was that way between 12 and 14. Back then it was roblox, Minecraft, goat Sim, and Gary's mod. Then it was call of duty, fortnite and siege. Eventually he returned to normal games as he got older and beat mad max, God of war (2018),need4speed payback, the crew, gt sport.

My daughter was all into the Sims 2,3 and plus all the spinoff.

I don't think many kids today are into traditional games until older. It makes sense in a way, there isn't many kid friendly games made anymore. Plus social media.

And yet somehow the top 30 or so STEAM all time CCU is littered if not the majority of games released in the last 3 years or less.

Take a look at this:

If you combined Steam and Roblox, six individual games within Roblox would be in the top ten CCU on Steam right now. Roblox is untouchable with the 15 and under crowd right now.

Forever games are certainly capturing the attention of the youts', but I havent seen that many examples of excellent, agenda free games failing to still do gangbusters (Helldivers, BF6, Silksong, ect).

Personally, I find with my kids it's largely because parents don't want to fork out the money to keep buying new games. Or fork out the money to buy the latest console or upgrade PC hardware. My kids don't have that issue and like other games. We have a PS5 and Series X in the house and while their PCs aren't cutting edge, my daughter has a 3080 and son has a 2080 TI. However their friends don't have 99% of the games my kids have, most don't have the latest consoles or a PC and their parents won't buy them so my kids want to play Roblox and Fortnite because that's what their friends are doing. Good chunk of their friends are playing on Switch, last gen consoles, their phones or tablets.

After seeing the positive reception its getting, I'll likely play it at some point in the next couple months (especially if patches improve performance a bit) by subbing to gamepass PC. I feel bad for obsidian - I don't expect this to sell well due to the gamepass effect.

Were people expecting mega numbers for this? It's an Obsidian game, they haven't had a real popular game in ages. Even great games like Alpha Protocol and Tyranny were flops. Hell, they can't even release sequels that do better than the previous games in hit series, despite actually having the better games. KotOR 2 and New Vegas stand testament to that. They couldn't even do the same with the one franchise they had that actually had any sort of popularity, namely Pillars of Eternity 2. Not even the press give them a pass, look at the meta scores for New Vegas, Tyranny, and Alpha Protocol.

Combine that with Game Pass and well, here we are. If it wasn't for Microsoft this studio would likely be in extreme trouble, or shut down ages ago. Downsized at the very least.

No. Right now it's looking like it will do worse than Avowed after months of heavy marketing. Being on Game Pass doesn't prevent people from buying games as we saw with Hollow Knight and Oblivion. What we're seeing here is a total rejection by users on Steam.

Outer Worlds 1 was pretty successful, it sold over 5 million copies despite being on Gamepass. It even got a (shitty) remaster.

I can't imagine MS would've spent double the development time for the sequel if they weren't expecting a hit.

Is a games success determined by Steam numbers? It's on PS5 lest we forget, having said that I just want a good game to play, so hopefully it is.

5 million over 4 years, and multiple platforms mind you. Some pretty deep discounts as well. Despite that the Steam peak CCU was just over 20k. Sure it was on Epic for a year, but come on, that the Epic store. 10% of sales (if that) come from there. The sequel is on Game Pass, so with that and all the previous numbers, I wouldn't expect the game to do amazingly well in terms of CCU, even if it's a good game.
