Arc Raiders |OT| Gaming's Next Mario 64 Moment™

We are on the eve of an industry altering game. We will remember the launch of this in the way we remember Mario 64.

See you on the other side, Arc Raiders friends.

JRPGs aren't bringing down the overall state of the industry. These endless me-too Tarkov-wannabes are tiresome, derivative, and reductive to the medium.

Disagreement is part of discussion - and I strongly rebuke the value of this "extraction shooter" slop. "Mario 64 moment?" Mario 64 represented inventiveness and creativity - Nintendo at its nadir, and the advent of the next generation of gaming. This is just another copy-paste youtuber-bait slop-job trying to cash in on a questionably-popular fad. The comparison is irksome, even if in jest.

Interesting point of view, how many extraction shooters are there though? Surely not enough to bring down anything.

I never play these kinds of games, but I've been curious about this one…

And before any of you shove a garden gnome into my eye sockets for not jizzing out about this game…I fully acknowledge these types of games don't speak to me….but I have been pricked by the hype/curiosity bug.

I don't see why people are so ridiculously hyped? I watched that Riloe video, some build making videos etc….and I don't see what it makes it that much different than typical extraction shooters?

Load in, scavenge, fight against players/environment, build out your character with loot you made from successful runs…it looks competent design wise, but the hype seems way overblown

But - I am curious and want a reason to buy in.

I am a solo player, I don't have any friends who'd play this so…would it even be fun? I don't love competitive PVP stuff really because I suck.

No hype detected, its only the next Mario64 moment, happens daily on gaf.

Same. I played the server slam and think it's not for me, but I keep watching videos of it. None of my friends are into this genre so it would be mostly solo for me, unless I connected with some folks here.

Tough to say.

This is definitely a "steal yo sh**" genre, but I'd say ARC Raiders is far and away the best Extraction title to give lower skill / defensive players avenues to succeed.

- 3rd person corner peak mitigates sweat aggression to a certain extent.
- None of the quests force players to PvP.
- Some of the defensive gadgets like smoke and proximity mines are very effective.

I'd say go for it. This genre kicks all kinds of @$$ and ARC Raiders is the first one built for mainstream success imo.

That said, you really do have to grind for the first 10 or so hours before you can leverage the games design around your preferences.
Land of Thieves.

I've spent half my day watching streamers like JackFrags and Tomographics impressions. God damn, I have not been this hyped for a game since Helldivers. It looks unbelievable. Like PUBG, DAYZ, and Helldivers had a baby.

Have any of you seen footage of the in-game store? I'm hearing the prices are quite expensive. How much are my raider tokens from the deluxe edition worth?

2400 is like 1 quality outfit. I never buy these cosmetics and just sticks with the free stuff so these things never bother me

The biggest selling feature and draw for me is there is a real goal to work for before a season/wipe occurs.

That expedition system is genius!!!

Ooooo, tell me more! What is the expedition system?
Each season you will work towards getting to level 20, and specific items/amount of stuff needed to then send your character for that season out somewhere into the world. You'll lose that character but they go on to set up exploration expeditions.

In you doing so you'll get cosmetic rewards, exp boosts and item boosts for next season, and stash inventory space expanded etc.

Your skill tree and loot you had and more will be reset, but it's all optional. So if one season you don't play a ton and don't care about the rewards you can opt to retain and go into next season without giving up anything.

Allows people who are fine with resets to do so and get rewarded for it, or those who don't want to don't need to and can keep building up their character as is if they play far less.

I haven't watched this video but it's 5 minutes so it should explain it well.

Wow that sounds awesome! Thank you for explaining that. I'm liking the approach here and that seems very sustainable over the long run.

The "typical extraction shooter" doesn't exist.

There's Tarkov, which is arguably the most obtuse successful game in history. There's Hunt Showdown which plays more like BR than Extraction. Then there's 7 low budget failed Extraction Shooters that didn't stick for various reasons.

One would get ARC because Embark is the first contractor who didn't skip steps. They looked at all the other titles in the genre and did every core aspect the right way.

And this genre? Oh boy, this genre is gooood. Better to be there on the ground floor as this genre ascends.

Why are people hyped? I'll take a shot at it.

Nostalgic 80's retro futurism combined with an ascending genre that's been desperate for much friendlier machinations (and quality), developed by a quite beloved ex Dev team, resulting in tense, chaotic moment to moment gameplay, that has an organic cinematic feel to it.

Oh and the sound. The fucking sound.

Game looks amazing, but I'm worried about a new IP of multiplayer game being sold instead of F2P

I cant remember the last one that have succeeded

Edit: thanks for the Gold, clarky clarky 🫂

OK, I watched too many videos. Deluxe preordered on Steam. If people want to squad up, I am down. None of my regular crew are getting this.

Helldivers 2.

I think there are enough parallels here which make this likely to succeed.

(I know you said new IP, but most people's first encounter with helldivers was the second game).

Having played the server slam, I'm curious what the pull of the game is for most. The resources you take out can be used to make items and whatnot to take back in. You can get better weapons by crafting and/or buying them, but those are not safe should you die. The point of the round is to scavenge and escape with the resources to make stuff to take back in. Is it the novelty of "content?" If that's the case, I'd give it a few months before players have exhausted the game, even with 5 maps. I'm not trying to be too reductive. I'm trying to understand the goal. The gameplay loop that makes people excited for it? Even if I don't like something like Apex, I can understand what people are enjoying about it. I want to see what you see.

Its all about tension and risk. Find something good or take in your best items, engagements become heart stopping. The best runs are very memorable. Expect lot's of stories about people escaping by the skin of their teeth and such in here over the next few days.

The genre has very high highs and very low lows. Expect your soul to be crushed should you decide to jump on board.

The server slam was just a tiny slice of the game.
