Brendan Fraser & Rachel Weisz In Talks To Return For New ‘Mummy’ Movie From Universal

Universal Pictures is returning to one of its most beloved action-adventure franchises, with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz in discussions to return for a new Mummy movie, presumably reprising their roles from the studio's Mummy films of the '90s and 2000s, multiple sources tell Deadline.

Reps for Universal Pictures declined to comment, and plot details for the new film are under wraps. But we hear Radio Silence's Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will direct from a script by David Coggeshall (The Family Plan films, The Deliverance), with franchise veteran Sean Daniel to produce alongside William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein of Project X Entertainment.

This needs to happen

I'm usually not a fan of these late reboot nostalgia cash grab films, but I would actually really like to see this one in particular.

Loved the first one but please don't do the modern Hollywood writing trope and have them divorced, we Brendan Fraser & Rachel Weisz going on a fun adventure.

I liked both movies with them, but it's probably a bit too late. I mean the first Mummy came out in '99... Still, can't be worse than that Tom Cruise flick.

Ok but what if we made Fraser's character suicidally depressed because his son died

That could work but you would to team him up with a female character that would be better than him in every way, the plot revolves around her, she leads him about and is totally insufferable. To make sure its perfect the studio should make sure she is played by someone with no chemistry with Brendan Fraser, zero on screen charisma and is the Hollywood flavour on the month.

Spend 400 million and we might be onto a winner here. :pie_thinking:

Nope. Don't. Please.

I love Brendan's movies from the 90s and 2000s. He was a lovable actor who made me smile in many movies. But he's not in "movie star" shape these days, and even if we don't want to admit it, we want our movie starts to be in shape. I don't say that with any malice, it just is what it is.

Rachel Weis? She still looks like a goddess. Bring her back and have his character be dead. Have a new leading man step in if they really feel the need to bring this IP back.

They could also just leave it be and come up with something original...

So will Mummy 3 be retconned?
Well yes it's garbage.
It is really not bad at all. Some of the CGI is a little excessive and change in lead actress was peculiar but the film was fun.

You have not seen the 1959 Hammer reboot. Originally, The Mummy came out in 1932.

If they're going to do this for the love of god, please let this be a male-centric story. Let his character shine. Do not suppress his masculinity. Rachel's character can still be important, but work alongside him. I echo bringing back John Hannah as well.

I know Hollywood hates the "white hero/savior" with a passion, but please focus on doing justice to this franchise and not adding things for the sake of diversity or to subvert expectations. We don't want another forgettabel sequel.

Btw, despite Brendan Fraser being a bit old i think he can still do it. He would need to get in shape, but i'd certainly be excited if he came back.

Mark Hamill got in shape for The Force Awakens. I'm sure Fraser can do it too.

You know this is exactly what is going to happen, obligatory with Fraser character being depressed at the beginning of the movie and Weisz being the girlboss and annoyed at her ex-husband at the beginning but over time she remembers how charming he was and they get together at the end due to all the adventures they had in the movie.

The first Mummy was special because Eve was at the same time smart girlboss but also she didn't hesitate to run back to Fraser to protect her when needed.

I love the first one but always thought it was a missed opportunity not to have them go on completely unrelated adventures, Indiana Jones style, in the sequels. What are we doing? Oh, Imhotep again, then another mummy because hey [taps title of poster], it said Mummy on the 1999 film. There must be mummies!

I'll always have time for Fraser and Weisz but the time for this franchise to not go off in the wrong direction was the year 2000.

I don't think i ever watched the second movie in its entirety, it was that inferior to the first one, i think i had a shrek 3 moment and stopped halfway or 3\4...
