Tomb Raider Anniversary (PS2 classic on PS5)

This game has recently been dropped on PS + and I am playing it for a good few nights since. Actually further than I ever got in this game, I am in level 11 or so.

The thing you might be most curious about right now; how is the port on PS5?

Its good. If you told me its a bonafide remaster and not a PS2 ver, I might've believed you were it not for the menu icons etc. The game generally looks amazing, the IQ is really good for a PS2 game. This is like the opposite of the botched TR Legend Ps2 classic. The game is 60fps, but truth be told there are some dips in large areas. Do turn off Progressive Scan, because it isn't meant to push 1080p. And I think changing Region to PAL will put it to PAL60. Very solid work.

Now some history about the game.

TR was dead after Angel of Darkness. But then came TR Legend and that succesfully rebooted the franchise. That game was short and easy, very accessible. I remember really liking TR Legend on the 360 and I was thrilled TR:A was announced; being a remake of a landmark classic. I was gutted when it turned out to be PS2 and Windows only, well after Legend had been released on 360. This was in 2007; the 360 was making waves and even the PS3 was out. Quickly rumors surfaced about a TR:A port on 360, possibly episodic. This was true and one of the weirdest things in gaming; they would release 2 packs on the Marketplace, and you could only start them if you had Legend. I don't know why. They also released a stand alone disc version for a fair price.

The funny thing is, I bought the disc day one on 360 but then ended up playing it for perhaps 3 hours and put it away. I didn't remember why exactly.

Now after 10 ish hours with the PS5 version its probably because of some things I dislike.

-The controls. They are modernized, kind of like Uncharted before Uncharted was out. Who invented it, TR Legend? This means Lara controls well overall, but a lot of things are automated. Which means jumps are hard to judge, and sometimes the game decides you wanted to go for that other ledge and you jump inbetween into nothingness. The tile based gameplay is more clear, if you understand it you won't fail a jump, ever. However, being a PS2 Classic this game has Rewind. And you'll love it.

-The combat. They tried to make it more 2007. Which is with evasions, slow mo.. more fancy. I hate the adrenaline dodge. When there is an obstruction or another enemy chances are you will clip and fail it. I also hate the knockdowns, you can be stunlocked pretty much. They tried to make it cool but failed with it. There isn't too much combat though, which is good.

-The T-Rex was a wow moment when I found it in 1996. Here its a required boss with adrenaline gimmicks and QTE.

-QTE. Its 2007 so its forgiven, and in this game very easy.. but its still shit.

On the plus side I must say I kind of enjoyed the centaur boss fight with the shields.

But is it a bad game? far from it. This game smokes the survivor trilogy in terms of complexity, puzzles and pacing. Lara shuts the fuck up in gameplay, and you aren't being swarmed by enemies. I probably prefer the original, esp. lately the remaster with modern controls (its good once you get the hang of it), but I greatly enjoy Anniversary right now. I dare to say I like it more than Uncharted too. It got better because of its dumbed down offspring.

So now about Underworld...

I really liked it. Obviously not as good as the original but a very pleasant makeover all the same - certainly better than Legend - the qte was a bit out of place but inoffensive enough and controlling lara for the first level or so could be quite erratic, especially how fast she turned. It was nice seeing all the iconic scenes redone but as I said, they were never going to match the 96 game.

A nice addition to a series that takes a lot of very unnecessary flak.

It is a fantastic game. I didn't mind any of the "modern gaming" (for its time, Anniversary is close to 20 years old itself) additions and changes. Battles like the T-Rex and the centaurs require some actual thinking in Anniversary, compared to the mindless shootouts with tank controls that they were in the original. Combat was by far the clunkiest thing in TR, and while it isn't exactly exciting in Anniversary, it's still better than "pump enemy full of lead and heal when your energy is low".

The exploration is a bit more streamlined, yeah. But it has to be said that in spite of the game's (and Lara's, mostly) immense popularity in 1996, the original TR was just too much for most people. If we had achievements at the time, the percentages for even getting past St. Francis's Folly would have been abysmal. The Anniversary treatment made it much easier to swallow.

I was incredibly shocked to find out a backward ps2 game correctly upscaled in 4k on my ps5 pro (well outside the prerecorded cutscene and UI interface). It's the first time I see such stuff. Obviously TR Legend emulation wasn't updated by sony and still run with the same shitty IQ🙄 oh well.

This is what ive been playing and i was incredibly surprised at how good the port is.

My complaints are about the story changes and Lara having no motivations of her own. Its all about her dad suddenly.

The game is a dumbed down version of the original but it's Crystals best Tomb Raider game from this trilogy.

Also i thought i had played this on ps3 but no. It was ps2. That gen really kept on going huh.

I think the Legend trilogy was peak TR in terms of fun and overall art direction.

I loved Legend, though it was very short and easy. But I think after the ridiculously difficult sequels and AoD, it was a good pick for a revival game. It had a good vibe and ejoyed replaying it as well. One secret per level, that was often well hidden, wasn't overkill. It wasn't cynical like AoD either.

Anniversary is good. Its Legend but then with a complex level design.

Underworld is great. It was close to being the best TR overall. There is just too little of it. Thailand is peak TR. But soon after the game gets it going it suddenly ends.

There IS a PS3 version though. It was included with the Trilogy. But Legend was a PS2 port IIRC and Anniversary looked like the 360/PC ver?

It's okay. It didn't have a single ounce of the atmosphere of the original, and you could see some of the whiny, scared and boring DNA of the Survivor version of Lara start to manifest with Lara in Anniversary. But it was a fun little romp that I enjoyed at the time.

Great game!

Tomb Raider Underworld, especially on PC at 4K 120fps, is peak. Lara's wetsuit model is the stuff of teenage dreams. Also dreams at age 43.

Game looks shockingly good

If you watch the comparisons with the PS3 and 360 version you'll be shocked.

So now about Underworld...
Underworld is a problem because the PS2 version is different and not very good
A lot cut backs on that game.
A complete Remaster of all 3 is still needed but this latest is so good it might be hard to see what they could improve outside of texture details.

For fans I've remastered the original artwork , enjoy 👍

I remember that place as one where the SweetFX settings I was using made it stand out.
They weren't that good, oversharpen and the colors were a bit off, but It looked great to me with the display I was using (it was a TN panel).

You can do this with the Emulators picture settings, obviously not sharpen it but bring the contrast and stuff to replicate this

No. Anniversary in the ps3 trilogy is the same version released on the x360 with added normal/bump mapping, higher resolution texture and water shader where this it's the ps2 version just in proper 4k.

It was a surprise to see 4k presentation in emulated PS2 game yes, but more surprising is that it's double the framerate of the original, actually at 60.
Best I can tell this is the first PS2 BC title they've framerate unlocked (and let's be honest, even with PCSX2 this is a crapshot and only the rarest of titles have working FPS unlocks).

Sly Cooper also looks really nice for a PS2 classic on PS4/PS5

PC is based on the PS2 version, which I think looks best anyway. The 360/PS3 character model looks like shit. Similar with Legends NG mode.

I'm not normally a fan of AI texture mods, but there is a really nice one in Nexus from this year. No smudgy wax bollocks. it looks really nice. My only slight issue is that the saturation was slightly boosted. He's looking to put out an update with less sat boost.

Also incredibly easy to install these days. TR Menu Hook plugin allows drag-and-drop mod file loading, and fixes some game issues.

I am now at the Final Conflict. I missed the 50 cal in the mines apparently, who cares. I don't even know why weapons are there, okay, the others fill the rage meter a bit faster. I still dislike the combat, I feel less mobile than in the original for some strange reason. You'll get stunlocked and knocked down so easily here.

The game does feel dumbed down. Its more streamlined (levels are cut, or mixed together) but in return the pacing is better. They severely shortened the final biome, which I won't complain about. Never really enjoyed the last batch of levels in the original.

Grapple and wall running is shit. And taken from TR:L canon.

TIL how to manually reload lol.

I always switch my subscription tiers a few days before it ends so I get all subscription features for a buck. Used that time to play Anniversary.

Good emulation with excellent image quality for a PS2 game. I honestly didn't expect that.

But it can't save the game from its major flaw: 100% health on checkpoint after death. There's no need to use and hence search for any medpack. Checkpoints are scattered in abundance, like every 100 meter and when you die you just spawn at full health at the last checkpoint.

Any difficulty, tension whatsoever goes out the window.
