Divinity 2 vs Baldur's Gate 3 vs (your coop RPG suggestion)

My buddy and I are planning to play a coop cRPG together over the holidays and would like your suggestions. Given that we're on different continents at the moment this is the closest thing we can do to table-top. He's rather new to gaming but enjoys taking his time and deep diving into lore of whatever he's playing. He's averse to anything that's fast-paced/needs quick reflexes.

I have played neither, or Original Sin, or any other coop cRPG.

Oh and he has never owned a PC in his life. PS5 or Xbox Series only.

I would go with Baldur's Gate 3. Each game Larian has made since Divinity Original Sin 1 has been making improvements, especially to interface and gamepad controls.

BG3 I do think is easier to pick up, easier to understand core systems, and the nicer production values help.

Only thing I would maybe suggest, is whichever one you pick, maybe lookup a youtube video that gives an overview of the classes. That way you get a better idea of what character to make, an don't get stuck there.

I haven't played them co-op, but I'd say BG3 if you lean more toward narrative and DOS2 if you lean more toward combat. They're both great games though.

I think they're both pretty good introductions to the genre.

BG3:
Better visuals and cinematics
Dungeons and Dragons IP

DOS2:
Faster combat
No dice rolls and less need for reloading saves
Better pacing
$15 on ps5 right now

Both are fantastic games and even more fun in coop. My pick is Baldurs Gate 3 simply due to the better production values and rolling dice for checks is fun. You won't go wrong with either though.

Yeah, I would go with BG3. The production values are better, systems are easier to understand, storyline/dialogue I think is better and like other said, dice rolling in co-op is pretty cool.

That said, D:OS2 is outstanding if you can want to save some $.

I would consider first how much time are you planning to dedicate for this becuase both games are rather long. You might be better served doing something that can be done in short contained bursts like Demeo.

Played both in coop. Close to 150 hrs each.

BG3 has more choices to make, is pretty straightforward once you figure out positioning, menus, and what actions you can take each turn.

DOS 2 has worse story / writing (not by much), but more tools to interact with the world. Taking it more in the im sim direction. Combat is more fun to me cause BG3 just becomes overly straightforward at some point. DOS 2 encounters always keep you on toes.

I would also recommend Wasteland 3 in coop. Smaller, better writing, more meaningful choices and consequences. Less freedom and im sim elements. Much simpler combat system than either. But those choices will have you debating with your partner.

BG3 is more noob friendly since it has much higher production value and it follows DnD rules. There's a lot more explanations and materials out there to help understand it's core systems.

DOS2 doesn't use Dice-rolls. I feel like the dice-rolls in BG3 were the main turn-off for a lot of people (even in this thread you already have someone talking about keep reloading saves as if it were a given). This is an element that if you aren't capable of being a good-sport about (basically accept whatever results you get at a time), it will make the experience considerably worse.

As for combat, both have it's pros and cons.
BG3 systems feel more mature (since it has been refined for over 40 years), but as mentioned its very dice-roll based and this can piss off people who aren't used to this kind of play.
DOS2 on the other hand is a lot more chaotic as well as exploitable (there's a particular skill that pretty much breaks every combat encounter), by the end of every fight you'll basically have half the map on fire and the other half covered in ice.
