Due to ongoing RAM shortages and the price of ram skyrocketing, we are now providing the option to select no ram in the build section of our website! If you already have RAM sticks or can source them elsewhere, feel free to use this option
✅

On the one hand it makes sense - but on the other - if you are tech savvy enough to install RAM why go with a pre-built in the first place?

Installing RAM is like one step up from plugging in a controller and will take about a minute. Probably plenty of people who are willing to do that but not willing or cba to do a full build.

Mirco Center in the U.S still offers lots of a great brand new Pre Built on sale right now all with rams included. I'll recommend buying one of their pre built if you're still on a really old computer.

"Wdym XMP/EXPO doesn't work and I have to run my 6000CL30 RAM at stock speed?"
"Wdym my Mobo may not support this kit?"
"I can't use more than 2 sticks at full speed?"
"Why doesn't my PC boot? All I see is an orange light on my mainboard!"

Buying RAM is the most sus when it comes to building a PC, especially for the inexperienced who have never heard of compatibility lists. It gets even worse on AM5 with higher spec RAM. Finding the right MOBO&RAM combination can be a bitch.

So I hope the seller here is making this very clear, providing part numbers for tested kits that work perfectly fine on their systems.

Yeah it's like changing a tire on a car. Anyone can do it.

I get that PC builders have to do this to stay in business if they can't source memory. But I wouldn't buy an incomplete PC.

We're in for some rough times. I read that motherboard sales have gone down by a whopping 50% last month as a result of crazy RAM prices. My guess is that sales in the entire enthusiasts PC market will totally collapse now. Vast majority of PC gamers are not going to build a new PC with these prices, so any company making motherboards, air and water coolers, cases, videocards, power supplies, etc will see their sales crater. If this situation will go on for 1-2 years this will kill many well known brands in the PC industry.

Yeah, that's crazy there's going to be so many layoffs in the industry because of this AI shit. I really hope some government WW shines a light on it soon because it's going to affect the overall consumer market massively.

My friend just bought a prebuilt pc (from very) it was priced at 2000 but he used the 20% off so 1600. The gfx card. Processor and memory alone cost more than the cost of the pc. Insane value.

Nows the time to buy if you're thinking.

I built my current PC back in August and I'm so glad I did it right now. only regret is I shoulda went for 128GB instead of 64GB. shit is just ridiculous. first the GPUs, and now RAMs. what's next that's gonna get hit because of these pointless "advancement" in AI?

I've got 16GB of DDR5 sitting around when I upgraded to 32GB. If I ever get another PC I'll put that 8GB back in and move my 32 into the new PC.
Then I'll have a backup PC when things start getting really bad.

I don't like the misleading thread title. But I suppose "One supplier offers it as an option" doesn't bait quite as many clicks.

How is that pre-built? Next without SSD, then without GPU, then without Motherboard, then without PSU, etc…

This is all just part of the plan to force everyone to use cloud-based RAM
If this ends up prolonged, I could see a massive push for the cloud, even more so than it is being pushed right now.
There is a sort of perfect storm setting in that seems like it could set the cloud up for such a push.
A way this gets better is if the supply chain gets bigger. More rare earths, more processing plants, but then we have the problem of fabrication and I think that is the main problem at the moment. The fabrication itself has been taken hostage by massive orders beyond our means. It's all bought up already before it's even made, lol. That's the funny part to me.

well, it has been a normal practice before to sell pre built PCs without a GPU.
where you get everything installed into a case, and then put your own GPU in.

so doing this with RAM makes sense given the situation.

I'll second this.

I still say that building your own PC is more worthwhile but I know a couple people who bought their in house Powerspec PCs and like them. They unlike most prebuilt companies just use off the shelf parts from good brands like Gigabyte and the like.

For example

This is $1500 right now. I quickly added the parts together the best I could (I couldn't find the exact Gigabyte B850 board so I chose the cheapest one they had and I chose the cheapest power spec non modular 750w PSU and the cheapest Samsung 2TB NVME since they didn't state the exact model) and without a case it came out to $1638 so once you throw a cheap case in there $1700 so it would save you $200 right now to just buy a pre built. Plus a 7600x3d + 5070 is a pretty good build IMO.

Edit: Also doesn't include a 240mm AIO which would add another $60 minimum so $260 under the cost of building it yourself.

Prebuilts are often cheaper

Micro center and stuff around here are able to get these combo kit together for cheaper than the individual parts idk how they do it

This isn't really anything new as long as it's very very clearly marketed as such. "Barebone" PCs have been a thing for a long time. They better have compatible RAM listing available to pair with the motherboard though.

Yeah I mean I don't see this as a bad thing. A guy I work with has bought a different pre-built system every year for the last few years, went from a 4060 to a 4070 and now 5080 - and probably could have saved quite a bit if this were an option. Also could have saved a huge amount if he wasn't a total buffoon and would have just bought the computer he actually wanted to begin with.

PC Bros defending this? Congratulations, you just beat Nintendo diehard fans.

this is literally nothing new.
prebuilds with certain elements missing have been common for years.

the PC I had before my current one was a prebuild that came without a GPU. I bought a 1070 separately a few months before that (it was dirt cheap in a sale) and then bought a prebuild with a Ryzen 2600X and 16GB DDR4 (also a dirt cheap sale at the time. the whole thing was less than 1000€)

I've never seen a pre-built that was cheaper - microcenter has (or had) great combo deals of RAM, CPU and motherboard but you are still assembling them and buying your case PSU etc.

I might be mixing up their combo ads with pre-builts

We don't have any near me just in my state so I see the ads but haven't been to one

I just got a pre-built for £2100, part picker priced at £2494. Pre-builts often work out cheaper. Mine was a cyber monday deal but even now it's £2299. Why wouldn't you want an option to remove a component if you don't need it? It's a fine idea.
