The complete lack of awareness was gold. And the fact he was killed early (like the Black people in movies trope) damn there sent me to the hospital.
The real crime is allowing the Drow (and to a lesser extent duergar, orcs and other mythic races) to be associated with black people AT ALL. These are not humans, their skin pigmentation is LITERALLY a reflection on their evil soul, and their visual aesthetic shouldn't be even remotely connected to actual earth races.
But now we get these ridiculous purple Drow and some of the best DnD storylines/characters for film adaptations are locked away for fear of internet harpy judgement, folks who have not, and will NEVER, buy any actual DnD product no matter what.

First they dumbed down the gameplay, then they let the woketards run the show.
Sure, that stuff as well, but no one was ever gonna work with those idiots. I'm talking about the golden years of TSR and early WOTC when they forged their best characters and stories. I guess these days you have critical role and whatnot doing that stuff but I only watch the cartoons for them.

Facts. I might be mistaken, but that was my reading of the episode's underlying message in that scene. Not saying that was the writers' intent, just my takeaway. And honestly, it was hilarious. Chang was always oblivious and inappropriate, that was his whole thing. Everyone's reaction when he showed up fully committed to the character is what made me laugh. What floored me was his lack of self-awareness.
In a way, the episode even ends up putting the writers in Chang's shoes. There was no intent to associate Drow with Black people, because they simply are not the same thing. The controversy came from a disconnect between intent and interpretation (albeit later), which is in part what happened with Chang in that scene. Brilliant if you ask me. If I remember it right, the real message of the episode was about bullying and empathy. That scene was a tiny, insignificant moment compared to everything else going on.
