[Weekly Software & Hardware Sales] Mario Kart World continues to do well in the final week of 2025! It takes the top spot for the 19th time. Also keep an eye on Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which is about to be released on Switch 2 [12/22-12/28]

Famitsu's sales rankings. This time, we bring you a summary of estimated weekly sales figures for game software and hardware from December 22nd to December 28th, 2025 in Japan.

Although there were some changes in the rankings, the top 10 remained the same as last week with Mario Kart World taking the top spot for the 19th time. An in-game event called "Online Challenge New Year Opening Cup" is scheduled to be held online on Monday, January 12, 2026 (national holiday) and is expected to be a big hit.

Next in second and fourth place were the Switch and Switch 2 versions of Pokemon LEGENDS ZA . Coming in fith and sixth are the two versions of Momotaro Dentetsu 2: Your Town is Surely There Too - East Japan Edition + West Japan Edition and both have recorded strong sales.

Next we want to draw your attention to Animal Crossing: New Horizons which remains in 10th place, just like last week. Animal Crossing: New Horizons Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is scheduled to be released on Thursday, January 15, 2026, but if you own the Switch version, you can play the game by purchasing an upgrade pass (550 yen [tax included]). It seems that many users decided to purchase the game at this time in anticipation of this.

Meanwhile, looking at hardware sales, the Switch 2 is doing well again this week, with over 200,000 units sold.

Switch 2 can survive by Japan alone. Lack of Japan centric exclusive is not helping PS5. While xbox, well, in Japan it is "what is xbox?" 🤣

Holy moly, Switch is wiping the floor with PS5. They are in danger of being pushed aside by the Japan, and who could blame them.
Tranny game has being dead for so long, wonder if Sony even care about being selled there. If this is how Japan feel about Sony western games (and for good reason), they will probably push that Intergalatic crap as well.

It's done.

Not even being able to crack 20k is absolutely grim.
Lacks of Japan centric exclusive and other exclusivity deals witb 3rd party is killing Ps5. Price cut is not enough or even Pspnextgen. PS needs exclusive that is for Japan taste. Good thing Ps5 still leads the other regions and world numbers but Switch 2 can survive by Japan alone and profit more from it. Japan has less love for PS brand this days. Japan studio really needs to be revive not just using the name team asobi and sony xdev.

Japan will definitely carry Switch 2 lifetime sales. I expect a huge percentage of sales to come from Japan and North America—up to 50%—with the rest coming from the rest of the world.

Thats a thing I've being saying, people seem to be very halucinate by farts or something.
They still believe Sony can win Japan by throwing handhelds there. So what? So people there can play LoU or Ghost of tranny?
Sony failed miserably to cather the japanese with their western focused lineup and GaaS bullshit. Prices might help them in other countries but not in Japan.

Pragmata and RE9 could have help Ps5 but now this games will also appear on Switch 2 which means Japan will prefer Switch 2. Even monster hunter wild is rumored to launch in switch 2 soon. Romeo is a dead man cannot help Ps5 either, its not a big Japan IP and that game is rumored to launch for switch 2 soon. Ryan and Hulst has to be blame for leaving Japan and not respecting the market. No exclusivity deals unlike in the past. To be honest the sony upcoming western exclusive like saros, wolverine and woke infested intergallactic cannot help Ps5 numbers in Japan. Even Marvel Tokon, is not even in the ranking as most anticipated game in Japan. Its like Japan gamers still hates Sony abandoning Japan and transfering to woke and leftist infested California. Yes PS is still number one around the world, but Japan is a very big lost. Sony has to revive the Japan studio name and bring more Japan centric exclusive especially RPG.

they should interview the 15 people who bought a PS4 in the last week of December 2025.

I don't think Tokon is going to move the needle anywhere.

PS5 is the old Xbox in Japan. Embarrassing.

I wouldn't go this far since the PS5 is actually trending ahead of the PS3 in Japan, not sure how it compares to the PS4, so the playstation is selling within the later norm for the brand. That said, PlayStation's real strength has never been about dominating a single market—it's the brand's worldwide appeal. Across North America, Europe, and large parts of Asia, PlayStation consistently maintains relevance and momentum, which is what ultimately sustains the platform over the long term.

Brain fart Sony. The time when FF7 rebirth or FF16 or Monster hunter wild was launch, that could have been the perfect time to lower the price of ps5, but this brain fart Sony management headed by Hulst instead increase the price of ps5. Sony reap what they sow in Japan and lost the interest of Japan customer because ps5 was to expensive that time those games was launch. The bad decisions of Hulst could also be rank along with Phil of xbox as the worse decision makers in gaming of all time. Let us not just point fingers to Phil as the worse, because Hulst is also the worse.

And I have no idea why.
Because Kirby is really REALLY popular in Japan not just the games but the manga, he appears in quite a few different manga magazines for both sexes as well as a metric fuckton of merchandise from game related gadgets to home goods to fashion items to the many maaany figure sets & gacha released. Also the various realworld kirby kafes serving themes kirby food it's mindboggling.

Low sales around the world but is a hit in Japan. Japan market can carry it alone. Sony made a mistake of disregarding Japan which is a big money.

I partially agree with that take. Sony absolutely could—and probably should—have made a bigger effort in Japan, especially culturally and with hardware that fits local preferences. But it's also not accurate to say Japan alone can carry a modern console long-term; the global market dynamics have changed too much for that.

Where Sony still has a realistic path to regaining some Japanese momentum is hardware form factor. A portable PS6 that taps into the massive existing PlayStation library, while offering far better third-party performance than something like Switch 2, would instantly address a core Japanese demand without reinventing the ecosystem.

That said, Sony's current strategy is actually more future-proof than those Gaf sales threads give it credit for. They're clearly prioritizing growth in emerging and expanding markets—India, the Middle East—and PC-centric regions like Korea and China through initiatives like Project Hero. These markets are growing faster, scale better, and align more with Sony's third-party-heavy identity.

The reason people keep acting "surprised" by PS5's sales is because these efforts aren't visible in forum narratives. But you do see them reflected in Sony's financials. While Japan gets the headlines, it's the worldwide footprint that keeps pushing PS5 numbers higher—and that's always been PlayStation's real strength.

Can't blame sony. you got the whole industry making games that did not come to nitendo consoles cause of the gulf in power and the console still sold like crap. for context we are talk about ps3 and ps4 where PC and xbox were still irrelevant, now with switch 2 and pc gettiing thirdparty games its dead. They really just want nintendo consoles its not about the games. imagine xbox was dead for ps3 and ps4 in europe and US markets we talking about 180 million back in the day.

Pragmata and RE5 showing up day and date on the Switch 2 is exactly why Sony felt a tremor in the force and released the region-locked PS5. The reduced cost did little to stem the tide. Major Japanese releases will be coming to the Switch 2.

Japan is the perfect country for a console like the switch. For tons of factors. No need of AAA big budget games and can survive with low mid budget titles in this market.

Pretty sure that was/is the case with Switch (1) already, with Japan and Americas representing >60% of LTD sales.

Is switch 2 still supply constrained in Japan? gonna be interesting if demand still stays strong when supply is no longer a issue.

I didn't know that but it seems awfully lopsided for a console closing in 160m units sold.
Yeah, Nintendo provides the regional split and update it every (fiscal) quarter. Here's the most recent Switch split (Q2 FY25/26):

Japan 37.77m (25%)
Americas 58.98m (38%)
Europe 39.56m (26%)
Other 17.70m (11%)

Total: 154.01m (100%)

Japan annual console HW/SW sales at retails for 2025 (only publicly available data included in Famitsu Weekly Top 30)

Software:
NSW: 7,668,298 (48.8%)
NS2: 5,569,796 (35.4%)
PS5: 2,381,657 (15.1%)
PS4: 106,886 (0.7%)

Hardware:
NS2: 3,784,067 (60.9%)
NSW: 1,520,384 (24.5%)
PS5: 879,204 (14.1%)
XBS: 31,226 (0.5%)

So PS5 ends with about 900k for the year. It should cross 8M this year. It'll be interesting if it crosses 9M the following year. 10M will depend on price cuts after PS6 launches. It'll probably end up close to PS4.

PS5 annual sales will continue to slow down year over year in 2026 and beyond.
The current PS5 momentum in Japan is slower than PS3 and PS4 at the same point in time which makes it likely that PS5 will become PlayStation's worst selling stationary console in Japan (actual worst selling PlayStation console remains the handheld PlayStation Vita).

Great Data, Switch 2 had the third best launch year ever in Japan for Nintendo just behind the 3DS (The 3DS launched in February) and GBA.

Switch sales is truly a miracle and one of a kind; with Japan declining population, I doubt we will see another console that can reach its height.

Also looking back, 3ds was extremely successful in Japan, sure it was not as good as DS, but still comparable to the best selling Playstation (ps1, ps2) hardware wise.

I don't know if PS5 can reach 10 millions at this point,
FF XVI and VII collections, Monster Hunter, all of them barely moved ps hardware.

What else remain?
RE IX will also available on switch 2;
I bet FF VII-3 and Dragon Quest 12 will available on switch 2 as well.

Perhaps sub 9 millions is the best forecast, which will put it as the second worst selling Playstation in Japan after Vita.

Pragmata and RE5 showing up day and date on the Switch 2 is exactly why Sony felt a tremor in the force and released the region-locked PS5. The reduced cost did little to stem the tide. Major Japanese releases will be coming to the Switch 2.

Sony also lost the exclusivity to the Final Fantasy IP to Nintendo which is also a big Deal in Japan.

I mean not surprising rethinking about it... DE sold shitty from launch what can change a 50 bucks cheaper model in Japan in the ps5 endlife cycle? Too little too late.

To be fair, that cheaper model is still more expensive than the OG model was when it launched. It would never move the needle.

So PS5 ends with about 900k for the year. It should cross 8M this year. It'll be interesting if it crosses 9M the following year. 10M will depend on price cuts after PS6 launches. It'll probably end up close to PS4.
Considering how horrible the holiday sales were this year i doubt PS5 is going to sell 800k this year. Let alone next. The only unknown so far is the GTA impact.

The problem is that you should subtract all the consoles that were bought by scalpers and shipped out of Japan. Even if it looks close it's really not and the software sales prove it every week.
