The Game Business - Nintendo Switch 2 sales stumble over Christmas

confused jeff bridges GIF

They boasted about exactly that (sell through) at launch as well.

At launch

Meanwhile digital prices in japan is less than 50 for new releases last i checked, easy to understand it sellls good there that stuff is basicly half price overall, and thats with a weaker currency.

Nintendo not even show the numbers of sales to consumers, there's was a lot of evidence that this would happen, Nintendo fanboys just don't want to believe
They show numbers to investors, not consumers. And they do it one month after the end of every quarter. So early-February we'll have figures

Or perhaps because people become crazy with the initial numbers only to lose to the ps5 in the holidays

Did the PlayStation 5 sold 15 Million in Record speed in the last 6 Months?

Did I miss Something?

I don't think the Nintendo Switch 2 is Struggling, especially not in Japan ;)

Even the wii u manages to sell out in the launch, are you guys going to live with launch numbers forever?

You keep saying that in every reply, and it may or may not be true, but one game does not make a system.

There are plenty of people like me who don't give a shit about Mario Kart. The only reason I own it is that it came bundled with my Switch 2. I've played it maybe twice, and at this point, I've uninstalled it from my system and will likely never install it again.

The lineup so far has been strong, but Nintendo has really dropped the ball in some areas, which I outlined in my previous post.

It didn't come bundled for free with your system, you paid an extra $50 for a game you didn't give a shit about. Brilliant.

It hit a speed bump during the holidays at $500 bundle/$450.

They took $50 off in Dec at most places in the US. Obviously that isn't done if you don't have units to sell.

Holiday game lineup only had 1 exclusive and it was Kirby Air which is a sequel to a weird/obscure/cult type game. The price to keep Sakuri happy?

MKW is big and will continue to sell. But families/casual probably find $500 expensive.

Nex marketed its way to stealing some of young kid audience for now. Cheaper price. ~$80/yr for all the games. Different experience. Your kids get 'exercise.' ...

Marathon not a sprint tho. With any console...vast majority of audience doesn't buy in the first year.

That's because Nintendo gave a Middle Finger to the Scalpers and did what every Gamer wanted, enough Stock at the Console Launch so that no one had to pay these unbelievable high Prices on eBay.

But People like you will always find a Way to bitch on Nintendo.

You should applaud Nintendo for doing a great and smooth Console Launch!

Edit: BTW: The Nintendo Switch 2 sold 15 Million until Today ;)

Then get a Job!!!

Video Games and Video Game Consoles costs Money!

Nintendo is a Business Company and not a Charity ;)

All the Consoles struggled to sell this Holiday.

Nintendo Switch 2 in the Headline just give more Clicks.

Jounalism at it Lowest as Usually ;)
Maybe it's because the other consoles have been on the market for 5 years and this is the first Christmas period for the Switch 2?

It's too expensive and Switch 1 owners don't see the gain, that's why people didn't buy that many in France. The main competition is Switch 1 lol. All the games are released on it, they are less expensive, the console is less expensive, the games are on the cart. Why would you buy a Switch 2 ? That's what happens when you release the exact same product.
So basically like every other console where you got a new machine with more power. I think this is very premature to start writing the Switch 2 off as yet.

They're comparing Christmas sales instead of comparing launch periods

S1 launched over holidays, s2 didn't

S2 had a stronger launch, so I'm not quite sure where the doom is coming from

S1 had stronger Christmas sales because it was holidays + launch
Context or indeed nuance will never get in the way of certain members agendas on here.

the troubles are obvious to anyone with more than 2 brain cells, if your 3 months old console gets beaten on its first holiday by a 5y.o one

Hey :)

Actually that's not the Reason ;)

The real Reason for that is that all People in the World right now has less Money to spend on Entertainment Devices because everything is getting more expensive, for example like Food, Clothing, Electricity Bills.

You maybe also noticed that you have way less Money in your Wallet in the End of the Month ;)

Strong launch doesn't mean anything, just look at the biggest of them all, Kinect, where it now?

I get the line of thinking, but I'm pretty sure this exact thing happened with Switch (1) Vs. PS4 in holiday 2017. So I'm not sure it necessarily should be unexpected.

That's doesn't explain why it lost for the ps5 at Christmas

You misunderstand. The PS5 and Xbox doing badly in their 5th year on the market isn't really news. It's expected. The Switch 2 having a substantially worse first Christmas than its predecessor is newsworthy.

It's clear the price is too high, just look at the Japan results. A minor drop over Christmas (although higher for the year) and that is the only market with the substantially cheaper version.

They don't care about logic

The Times were different 5 Years ago than Today.

From my feeling the Prices gone rapidly up for Food, Clothing and other nessesary Stuff that you need for Living for 2 Years now, and Prices are still increasing, that wasn't the case when the PlayStation 5 released. People have nowadays less Money to spend on Entertainment Devices.

But that's absolutely my Opinion ;)

I also don't think $500 Dollar for a new Console is to high, and Nintendo sold 15 Million Consoles in the last 6 Months, which isn't Bad ;)

Osaka,
No body is picking them up, even with all the promo. Pretty sure is lack of games , kiosks are always Mario kart and DK.

I don't think we need anecdotal "evidence" when we just got the actual sales for week 52. Switch 2 is now by far the fastest selling console ever in Japan, 3.78M in 30 weeks.

Previous record was held by GBA which reached the corresponding number in 40 weeks, followed by Ps2 with 45 weeks.

That's very common. PS4 outsold the Switch in its first year. Heck, the PS4's best year was the year the Switch launched. And the Switch's best year is the year PS5 launched

it would be understandable if PS5 were significantly cheaper than Switch 2, like $100-150 cheaper

Even with discounts it was much closer than that...

And again most people that wanted a PS5 already had it before Holidays 2025, it's a 5-year old product....

Switch 2 value compared to the previous Switch is simply not there, and not felt by customers especially in the Western World

The PS5 was sold at like 375, or even lower.

That's not how console sales work. Again, PS4's and Switch's peak year was around year 4/5. Same with PS5w It's a Bell's curve.

It already sold 10 million in 4 months, probably at 15 right now, in not even a year.

Too bad they didn't lean in more on Switch 1 title upgrades. The system they have is too stingy and convoluted considering the lack of Switch 2-exclusive software.

Still a great little game machine. I'm really enjoying my time with it.

That was in 2024, 2025 prices were higher than the previous year:
2024: $375 slim digital, $425 slim disc.
2025: $399 slim digital, $450 slim disc.

After Cyber Monday week, the Switch 2 Mario Kart World Bundle spent a significant portion of the month at $450 at all retailers (excluding Gamestop).
