• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

What game are you currently playing?

I have to revisit this one.

I enjoyed my 1st walkthrough 🙂
I got the bad ending for acting rationally as core cast and letting the streamer do what streamers do (act a fool).
tongue tounge out GIF by Danger Mouse

I did enjoy it though.

Replaying Far Cry 4 & the Division, my favorite comfort games among others, the atmosphere is incredible and gunplay/gameplay systems is smooth and works very well. Addicting and special. You got to give it to Ubisoft, even though they do some irritating stuff, they are masters in their craft. Atmosphere & freedom is always on point in their games.

I have Far Cry 4 in my backlog but maybe wanna try out The Division 2 but I'm a Solo monkey.

Division 1: You can totally solo this game. It's a decent challenge but fun and rewarding. Campaign can be fully soloed, some parts will be a bit hard but nothing impossible. In co-op you don't have to worry about getting flanked as your teammate will take those out as well as revive you when you die (and vice-versa) but solo is entirely doable with grenades and carefully taking cover, good gear and skills. I have done the campaign fully in solo once.

Most end-game stuff is also totally possible and fun solo apart from legendary campaign missions that are made for teams of three. You can do underground solo, you can do RNG dungeons solo easily as it's customizable. The PvPvE zone ( Dark Sector) is also super intense, fun and solo friendly.

I have around 100+ hours in this game solo.

I can't say much about Division 2 as I haven't played the game a lot yet, around 10 hours in, 4 in co-op and 6 solo and I think you can easily solo this as well.

Thank you for your insight you didn't need to do that 🙂

Cyberpunk 2077 - Phantom Liberty

I just started the expansion as I wanted to try the Switch 2 performance mode on my TV, looks really grat

Funnily I've also started playing Division 1 again. Haven't played it since 2019, when I've put roughly 100 hours into it.
It's still ridiculously good to just walk and explore in this game. I don't have an endgame gear goal this time, so I'm just scouring the map trying to pick up all the collectibles and shooting what's on the way.

It's a shame to loss on a great game for minor thing like that, I'll be honest that didn't bother me at all.
I'm still planning on finishing it. That scene was just annoying. Especially after the whole Vatican chapter was free of that bs, and Gina is a great character.

Resident Evil Director's Cut - Finished 10/10
My second favourite game of all time, just behind the original FFVII. I played through as Jill, as I normally do. Almost forgot about Chris, but managed to rescue him in the end.

Probably finish Breath of Fire 3 next or start Alundra.

So I can speak for TD2 (yes, I'm one of the dozens who prefer it to TD1 - gameplay wise it's considerably more refined, the enemies are less* bullet spongey and as someone who has spent far too many winters in major North-East Coast cities, I have no passion for snow):

* ""Less""

TD2 is extremely soloable, probably more-so than TD1 if I'm being honest. That being said the coop aspect is quite well done: You can turn on your Co-Op availability at any time. If it's on and you just start a mission solo, other folks may drop in randomly throughout the mission - or they may not. Loot is generated per player so nobody is going to steal your drops, though I _have_ seen people who got a sweet drop they didn't need, drop it in front of me for me to take. There's no communication required (I'm not even sure it's possible; there's a text chat but aside from `gg` or `o7` I'm not sure I've ever seen anyone communicate with it; especially since there are a lot of console players and typing probably sucks for them).

I should get back into it and check it out again; I haven't played for a year or two.

Edit: On topic -
Been playing through Star Rupture Early Access. It's sort of a "Babby's First Satisfactory" with more of a tower-defense kinda vibe. It's very pretty and runs surprisingly well on the 2070S that I'll probably end up using until I die. The game needs a significant amount of attention paid to the gameplay systems though - there's very little incentive to do anything right at the moment and "satisficing" carries the day. We'll see how it develops; still I enjoyed my weekend with it.

I agree on everything you said about TD2, it's way more refined, the gunplay and movement feels very natural and just about everything slaps, it's polished and beautiful. TD1 however has an incredible atmosphere, there is no game till date that has captured NYC like TD1 has, it feels real. I should go back to TD2 as well lol, I haven't even completed the NY DLC and there's a new one as well!

Anyways, I'm looking forward to how Massive will take this franchise forward.

I had put Star Rupture on my wishlist, looks like it finally got released as EA! Same devs as Green Hell which is a hard but fun survival crafting game. Will get it once it's out of EA as I do like Factorio/Satisfactory and this seems similar but more into combat than designing/building.

On the positive side, there's a lot more good than many people are giving it credit for - possibly due to incomplete tutorial/documentation (which will come eventually, either officially or orgnically via Tribal Knowledge). For example people complain about the building system and placing things One At A Time, not realizing that there's a 2-Dimensional "Zoop" available from the get go (Hold Right Mouse to draw a Zoop rectangle, then Left Click to commit). There are a lot of intricacies with the rupture phases and how the planet reacts/what resources are available depending on the phase.

The Pull-based logistic system definitely throws Factorio/Satisfactory veterans for a loop however. Buildings/consumers request materials from the network, which are then dispatched from wherever they are, rather than accepting what's on the belt. Rather than focusing on filling belts to saturation (which you can't), it's about traffic control so that deliveries can make it to consumer buildings in a timely/not congested way. The rails are Roads, not Pipes.

FFVIII

And oh my god this game is awful. The junction system sucks out all the fun of the game. The story, music and characters may be good, but the gameplay itself is just so annoyingly confusing that I just watch a completionist guide on how to get the platinum trophy as fast as possible to be done with this game. And I only do it because I wanna have that game completed before I start with FFIX.

haha, this is what i said like just a page before you (except i refuse to use a guide, cus i'm stubborn, and i'm not trying to work through the series, just felt like giving this game a shot).

Crayon had some tips:

I love 8 and there's something I think is important to know about it.

For the type of person who hordes items and will not use them for the whole game, or otherwise wants to "max" things, this is a bad game. That's a lot of people, and is a big reason that opinions on the game are mixed. I think I would call it bad design because they should know people play like that. The problem is drawing spells and stocking them up, then having to spend them to cast. This drives some people nuts.

But if you're like me and you want to see what's around the next corner, only grinding levels if I really have to, it's a really fun system.

Dragon Quest 1 Remastered - Finished 8/10
Completed my first Dragon Quest game! Enjoyed it. Loved the art style, world, and music. Story was very straightforward and easy to follow.

Breath of Fire 3
I love this game, but it doesn't half go downhill once you decide to cross the sea. Thankfully, I have crossed the sea and got past some of the tedious parts of the game...the well mini game for one.

Great game. I played this game four years ago. I hated how lot of the minigames were mandatory though. One of the worst ones had to be be the counting the beeps and going downstairs to push the button with the added annoyance of random battles. Than going back to start the engine and you had to make sure it was at the numbered beep. That's the main reason why the fourth entry will always be my favorite. The story, cast, graphics and gameplay are all my favorite in that franchise. Thankfully they don't force you into minigame sections either. The follow the star segment was still a pain though

I just beat RDR2 in PC, finally. Then I beat Days Gone on PC. Also beat Sons of the Forest with my daughter. That game was amazing. Pretty productive holiday break game wise.

I'm almost done with Monster Hunter Stories 2…..man these games are MUCH better than I ever imagined.

I avoided Stories for longest time I thought be just typical RPG with MH IP but able put so MH mechanics in its turned combat in such clever way…..it really feels like I'm playing actual MH in turn based form.

Thanks to Stories 1&2 I'm hype for Stories 3 as much as I'm with RE9 and Pragmata.

Crayon had some tips:
If it'd explain things better and have some red arrows pointing in possible directions where you could go in the areas like FF7 had, I'd try playing it without a guide.

But constantly having no idea where I'm supposed to go or what I should interact with on the maps is crazy design. I wonder how many people could play through this game today if they'd try to do it without guide.

Grand Theft Auto Vice City running on the PCSX2 emulator. After 24 long years, I finally reached 100% completion. I never managed to do it back in the day and got stuck at 98%. I was missing one hidden package (99 out of 100, so annoying), plus one other thing I did not even know existed until now. It turned out to be the shooting range challenge that unlocks fast reload. It makes the game ten times more enjoyable, and I had no idea this feature was even in the game, lol.

Now it is time for San Andreas. That game is an absolute beast, even by today's standards.

I'm alternating between Cyberpunk, Hades2, and Ninja Gaiden Sigma.

The latter is kicking my ass. I want to hate it as a result, but it's a rewarding challenge to learn and progress.

I don't think I made it past the motorcycle dudes in ch4 back in the day. I don't know if I'm man enough for hard mode, but I'm determined to at least finish the game.

Hades2... I just can't get Chronos in phase2. I am learning each run, but not very fast. In the first Hades, I found a boon combo I loved and killed him with the same boon regardless of weapon. I'm not sure I learned the game itself, but made it to heat 32 anyway. Hades2 feels better designed because I'm forced to learn the encounters themselves.

Cyberpunk is fun, but I'm just using crowd control with lots of RAM and guns. I'm not seeing anything super interesting in the talent trees yet, and the game isn't forcing me to try. Still, super pretty, and a fun enough sandbox for now.

Breath of Fire 3 - Finished 9/10
I still love this game despite all of its flaws. In my younger days, I would have given it a 10/10.

I beat Breath of Fire IV last year and I enjoyed that. I have played a little of Breath of Fire 2 but never finished it. I might go back to that next.

Yeah, the mini games are a nightmare. I also hated getting to the end of a dungeon or somewhere, and having the game hit me with "You need Rei/Momo" for this bit. Ugh. Also, some of said dungeons are awful to navigate. I got lost in a few places.

So last week I gave Hollow Knight another go. I actually made it through probably 3/4 of the game (not counting end game stuff), but called it quits again yesterday.
The exploration in this game is awful. It just feels like a slog to play and a chore to go through areas so many time.

But I wanted another metroidvania fix so I purchased Record of Lodoss War Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth (awful name) which happened to be on sale. I'm only about 2 hours in but this game is a blast.
I've also been enjoying Ball X Pit and Viewfinder.

Stalker 2 on ice for now cause i just bought the Royal Edition of KCD2 and i have rarely been sooo addicted to a game like i am right now.

Thats 54h in 4 sessions LMAO

Hades II - Just crossed the 80 hour threshold today. In post-game cleanup now. Have a lot of mixed feelings. I think the cast and scenario is weaker than Hades I, the game's stingy with nectar and other resources endgame and some of those stardust concoctions could be traps in early game (although I think demand for nectar might be balanced out by how many runs prophecies demand). I'm also ambivalent about the addition of the spell cast into your core kit. I think when you've got a build it can contribute to an overall strategy but otherwise it's an action to keep enemies at bay and not quite as actively frenetic as I'd like. Hexes are pretty cool though. And otherwise the game is just more Hades, so it's good! It's not a slam dunk improvement over the original though, so my general recommendation to anyone asking is to play Hades I and if you like it and want more then play Hades II.

Breath of Fire 3 - Finished 9/10

3 and 4 are fun games, the peak of what Capcom was capable of doing with sprite art too. 3 has this comfy, fun feel around much of the playtime, even if the greater context can be very serious. Stuff like Ryu disappearing for years and unwittingly terrorizing a mine for years being immediately followed up by Rei being revealed to be alive, to be a little crazy, and then him immediately slaughtering an entire mafia town are able to darken the tone of the game without fundamentally altering its character or having those events themselves feel wholly out of place. Or maybe the game was too formative for me and I'm just coming up with explanations for why I'm ok with them after the fact.

2 isn't really worth the time in current year. A pretty novel, dramatic opening punctuated by a crushing defeat by a badass monster like Barubary is really exciting, but the game itself just does not deliver. The dragon system is even more basic and uninteresting than the original game, the encounter rate is famously atrocious, and most importantly there's nothing in the game's story that hasn't been done better by countless games since. 2's the worst game in the series imo, an unpopular opinion, but I don't think there's much real defending you can do for it.

But I wanted another metroidvania fix so I purchased Record of Lodoss War Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth (awful name) which happened to be on sale. I'm only about 2 hours in but this game is a blast.

It's so good...! The game is gorgeous, it sounds great, and there's no fat on the experience. ... I mean, there's a couple side things you can do, but the game doesn't drag.

Star Wars Tales from the Galaxy's Edge (VR2)
pure meh
There is a lightsaber level but rather short. As a whole game that would probably not work as great as everyone thinks anyway. It's a shooter which SW could also be, but it just isn't a good shooter either.
C3PO/R2D2 have an appearance, and Vader too, but overall it tries to tell its own story and not rely heavily on known characters. Already forgot what the story was about though... felt like they had some levels and than spun some narrative around it. Pointless effort. It's somewhat okay if you desperately want to play some SW stuff in VR, but feels low budget like most half assed VR games.

GTA III Definitive
Unlike Vice City and San Andreas this feels closer to its clumsy GTA I&II origins somehow. The foundation is built for its sequels but it is a lot more rough. Driving is just annyoing, with terrible suspension and braindead other drivers. The scope is more enjoyable tough. At least San Andreas is way too big and just getting worse afterwards with "What can we add on top?" always answered with yes ever since.

Like a dragon Man who erased his name
Same thing as always. Convoluted story, skipping hard on every boring dialog, main story that is easy to finish while optional stuff can be rather hard. Here leveling your team takes a couple of hours of mindless grinding the same stuff over and over while all solo fights can be done first try. Balancing probably done with some randomizer. ugh

Shapeneon Chaos
If this would have released before any Geometry Wars it would have been still not really even okay. But if you are just searching for anything that satisfies some GW twin stick shooter itch it will do the job. For 10-15 minutes. Then you have the Platinum trophy and seen everything. 1€ for that is okay though. lol

Prey
2 hours in and I don't see me continuing. It feels just off. Like some game that took elements from Portal, Doom3, Deus Ex, Bioshock and did not come together. I expected it to be different than the original Prey, it has pretty much nothing in common, but that was even though it was rather mediocre too, at least interesting enough to finish once. I have my problem with the narrative in eg Deathloop too, but here it begins way too vague to even get the foot in the door.

Hexologic
number/calc puzzle game. Nice for a few hours.

Cosmic Express
Puzzle game where you have to find the correct path to an exit and some stations before. Also simple, but also nice for some hours.

Dynasty Warriors: Origins

I was really craving some Musou gameplay after finishing Age of Imprisonment and this definitely scratches that itch

At least the framerate is stable lol

Serious Sam 4 in coop.

Well, it's Serious Sam, so it's pretty fun. The larger levels with more enemies work well in coop, things get insane towards the end. Some of the gadgets are OP as fuck, they can basically clear an entire screen. The soundtrack is great.

Technically the game is still a piece of shit, I don't think they ever fixed the performance/bugs.

Mother of god! that's what.. 13 hours per day? are you still alive?

Anyone gone back to Wukong since it came out? I finished it twice back then, but was thinking how good it may have gotten over time. I was going to get back to it but I gotta resub for my cloud saves. I was wanting to play NG3+ for the pole. Makes me think about what Zhong Kui could be like. I've basically been hyped for NiOh 3 this whole time. Also playing Dark Souls II and working on upgrading my Elite Armor. Just about to the chariot.

Was bouncing around many shooters but nothing clicked until finally playing Doom: The Dark Ages and what a thrilling ride it is. Love the colorful parry system and its unique blend of shooting, parrying and melee. Didn't care for some of the open level designs. Weapon variety isn't as distictive when playing up close. The customization and fast loading makes it fun to mess around with post game.

Now playing Detroit: Become Human (DBH) on pc after starting it years ago on ps4. It's an amazing glimpse into a not so distant future. It's fun being immersed in this world/simulator/visual novel. My neighbors happened to come over while playing and got totally sucked into the story. They're not gamers and couldn't believe things like this existed. One of them ended up watching the whole Kara story on youtube after, lol.

DBH is fun and all was itching for a little more action so started Atomic Heart, a sort of AA Russian Bioshock. The atmosphere is incredible and enjoying just exploring the rich world and all the details they lovingly created to tell the story. Gameplay has highs and lows but sticking with it so far.

My favourite new IP this gen.

Bought Cyberpunk Ultimate Edition on PS5. I've bought and played it before at release on Stadia.

This is now a whole different experience. Only couple of hours in, but I like it much more than my first play through, which ended halfway through the story and where I got sick of the bugs.

Looking forward to Phantom Liberty.
I had this on PS5 and now PC and I just can't get into it.

I just really don't like the characters I think and the ability upgrades make no sense either!
