So, ever since the SNES release, Nintendo had the habit to introduce some kind of subtitle in their releases so everyone know that release was part of a family of products or whatever.

Some were cool(advance, deluxe, 3d), some were whatever(super, 64, DS) and some were terrible( U, new, wii). But not one of them where so on the nose and plain boring as we got in this generation: Nintendo switch 2 edition.

Damm man, look how it ruin all logos artboxes:

It's so extra and in your face, I feel like it ruins all titles a little bit. Couldn't they come up with anything else? I thought that "new" was the worst we could get, but now I'm not so sure.

What do you guys think?

It just says exactly what it is, the Switch 2 version of an old game. You don't need to learn its secret meaning. If it was "DX"-wtf does that mean?

It's only for Switch 1 games, so this can only fade away as time goes on.

Subtitle? Not sure they are all subtitles. Some like Deluxe are suffixes but Nintendo 64 is a name, they just added the Edition as it could have been "Nintendo 64 Edition". I think it makes it clear that it's for Nintendo Switch 2. I think the most messed up was DS → DSi making some games unplayable without the camera but the names are literally pretty similar.

I always hated "New". Made things so dumb and confusing in the 3DS era.

Imagine being some kid's grandma looking at a used Limited Edition New 2DS XL at a GameStop and trying to figure out what the hell you're even buying.

Though there's something to be said about how bad "U" was during the Wii U era, since that arguably contributed to the failure of that entire system.

Came here to say exactly this. We used to have stuff like Super Sprint for the NES (not SNES). Lots of SNES games had "Super" added to them, but we still had "Super Mario Bros." that didn't play on the Super Nintendo. Grandparents everywhere hated this. Same with the 3DS and their stupid "New" moniker.

'New' is easily the worst. Just so lazy. New Super Mario Bros., Yoshi's New Island -- dreadful names.

That whole era for Nintendo had rough naming conventions. Like the also creatively bankrupt "Super Smash Bros. for Wii U / 3DS" that everyone hates so much we just call it Smash 4.

the issue with the Deluxe subtitle was the inconsistency.

some games they wrote it out as Deluxe, like in SMB. but then some others just got the DX abbreviation.

and SMB wasn't even an upgraded version, it was just a port, while other DX games were gameboy games with added color...

it was a weird and inconsistent naming scheme

I understand that it's complicated to get old games to just work on a new system, but I'm bummed that so many games don't just have better performance on the Switch 2. Sad to think that a lot of the titles I bought on the original switch, that work on the Switch 2, probably wont get optimized.

At least for now as long as there is still major support for Switch 1. Besides, I like knowing it's officially the version they put some actual effort into to look/run as it should on newer hardware

I bet many on this forum didn't know this.

so these are in fact not Switch 2 games. they are Switch 1 games with Switch 2 enhancements, exactly like Mario Odyssey, yet that game doesn't have a Switch 2 edition...

No it tells us the game was made for Switch and it has a subset of bolted on features we have to pay extra for Switch 2.

No it tells us the game was made for Switch and it has a subset of bolted on features we have to pay extra for Switch 2.

If I own a Switch then I'm not going to want the Switch 2 edition because I can usually find the og Switch version cheaper. Pretty clear cut to me.

Some games, they decided to release free patches, while others a Switch 2 Edition, with the pattern determined purely by business reasons on a case by case basis.

But did we ever think they were anything but Switch 1 games with 2 upgrade patches? No one thought these were from scratch remakes like Demon's Souls.

The TOTK Switch 2 cart contains the same Switch 2 upgrade pack that you can download if you already own the Switch 1 game. But it does contain assets like higher resolution textures, it's not just a resolution patch.

Companies adapt to this reality by making things clearer, and as a result, people get even more stupid.

64 was charming, great console. Switch 2 needs depth, it's a raw console that's attempting big console things, bad online, graphics are a big problem, it's amazing to me that Nintendo keeps going cheap on those things. Spend the money.

IMO Microsoft did this far better with simply having this on the cover:

I think it would be far clearer what these are if they A: used the Switch 1 cover art, and B: instead of being called Switch 2 edition, just have a label saying "+ Switch 2 Upgrade Pack" or something along those lines.

but because they themselves also knew how confusing their packaging and naming is, they had to slap a whole disclaimer on the bottom of the case, which itself isn't even making it clear that this cart in fact works in a Switch 1 as well. not even on the back of the case is there any indication that it works on Switch 1.

even GameBoy Color games did that at least.

If someone is buying a Switch 2 Edition of the game, chances are... they own a Switch 2. And will be playing the game on that. If they own a Switch 1, they'll be picking up the Switch 1 version and can upgrade later.

I'm not seeing this huge contingent of confused Switch 1 owners buying software with big SWITCH 2 banners on it and being distraught that the game isn't running.

Because 1) they have above room temperature IQ, and 2) the cartridge will work regardless of platform anyway...

ahead of launch there was a whole controversy where people throught (due to the bad messaging on the case, and even conflicting answers by Nintendo's support workers) that all Switch 2 Edition games simply are the original game and need a download for the switch 2 features.

the entire Switch 2 edition program has been confusing from day 1 for different reasons.
and IMO selling a Switch 1 game in a Switch 2 box that never mentions that it's a Switch 1 game is pretty damn confusing.

and I think you are once again MASSIVELY overestimating the average consumer's intelligence.
I've seen multiple people online (including a twitch streamer) buying an OLED Switch, thinking that's the new one...

The Switch 2 covers are awful; the large red stripe and all the asterisks and letters, or the key card icon, ruin the cover art. They were much better on the first Switch.

Name is fine. It's the having to pay for that 'edition' that I find boring. I did it once to BOTW. I don't think I will ever pay for another upgrade on a Nintendo game again. So the name only has meaning for me if it's a free upgrade.
