They just want to remove all confusion. If they name it remaster people will think it will work on the old Switch.

Let alone subtitle, they should have called the Switch 2- SSNES - Super Switch Nintendo Entertainment System

You are conflating these very different things. NSW 2 Editions are patched versions of NSW games when both are playable on Switch2 that conveniently cost 10 bucks at a minimum. Super, 64, Wii, and U were all new games on the platform indicated.

Everything about the Switch 2 game box is ugly as hell. Somehow the Subtitle is the least offensive part.

I suspect they have put NOE in charge of Switch 2 box art.

NOE are the most joyless cunts with zero design taste. I lobbied so hard against that box style in Scandinavia.

My proposal was that NCL would give Scandinavia the US box art instead. There was a precedent for it, as in the Super NES era NOE did black boxes and NCL produced completely different colourful boxes for SCN, UKV and AUS.

But with N64 it didn't fly anymore, NOE had gained power.

"Marginally Improved FOMO Edition"

Not so. Many of these editions include, up to;

Increased resolution to 1440p (or higher)
60fps (or higher)
HDR support
Mouse Mode Support
Improved textures
Added VFXs
Completely new added content (e.g. Kirby and the Forgotten Lands)

Switch 2 Editions can, and usu. are, offering much more than just a simple resolution/framerate bump a la Mario Odyssey's Switch 2 improvements

ahead of launch there was a whole controversy where people throught (due to the bad messaging on the case, and even conflicting answers by Nintendo's support workers) that all Switch 2 Edition games simply are the original game and need a download for the switch 2 features.

the entire Switch 2 edition program has been confusing from day 1 for different reasons.
and IMO selling a Switch 1 game in a Switch 2 box that never mentions that it's a Switch 1 game is pretty damn confusing.

and I think you are once again MASSIVELY overestimating the average consumer's intelligence.
I've seen multiple people online (including a twitch streamer) buying an OLED Switch, thinking that's the new one...

It was initially confusing, but if people are still confused then that's really on them. There is ample information now about how "Switch 2 Edition" works.

The packaging has a large disclaimer in multiple languages:

For the lazy, there is a QR code next to that, taking you to a website explaining it which clearly says in the first paragraph:

The way Switch 2 Edition upgrades work has now been consistent across releases ie. it's just a Switch game with a Switch 2 upgrade bolted on - to the point where if you have any prior knowledge at all about how the Switch 2 Edition scheme works, seeing it mentioned on the box should tell you everything you need to know.

It's also been commented about how ugly Switch 2 cases look compared to the Switch - and I agree with that opinion - but the fact that they're so visually... distinctive also further reduces confusion. Big 2, red case, "Switch 2 Edition". It is as granny-proof as Nintendo can make it, short of completely changing the whole look of the branding.

The main concern for normal people when it comes to cross-platform compatibility though is "is this version of the game gonna play on my device?". The cartridges being platform agnostic Switch carts solves that completely. Again, granny-proof. Doesn't even matter if she doesn't buy you the 'right' version at Christmas.

If people are still confused then perhaps schools ought to start administering Switch 2 Edition tests instead of IQ tests.

Nintendo should go back to Super as prefIx.
Super Nintendo
Super Mario
Super Metroid

Super Nintendo Switch 2 would have been amazing

Super is superior

I hate the 'nintendo switch 2 edition' . Just makes me think this is a switch 1 game with a minor upgrade.
Give us some more exclusive switch 2 games so I don't have to stare at these cross gen games thrown in my face with those ugly banners on half of the game case.

You're complaining about crossgen games for a console less than a year old...😂

I'd at least rather have a moniker that says "We made this version specially tailored to the stronger hardware" than whatever the fuck Aspyr did with their Tomb Raider "Switch 2" version.

Doesn't seem obvious these are Game Boy cartridges and not GBC ones at first

I adressed this

even GameBoy Color games did that at least.

and GBC games that didn't work on GB were labeled as Only For GameBoy Color

and of course GBC only titles had a different cartridge shape (one that prevented the DMG to even turn on) meanwhile Switch 2 Edition carts are the same as all Switch 2 games, while working on Switch 1...

2 of these work on Switch 1, but only 1 of them makes that clear.

Remember when companies started doing remasters and putting HD in all game boxes? Remember how out of place it looked in almost all cases? That's what I'm imagining we will see those titles a few years from now.

Also, few years ago switch owners used to go on Twitter complain directly with the devs about how logos looked bad on the switch home screen, so...

😆Yes because I invested in the console day 1 and have yet to play a exclusive game thats justify my purchase. Cross gen is to be expected but no killer title after 8+ months on the market?

Wii U is the worst named console ever. Should be Wii 2 or Wii Too. But Wii U was not marketable. Go with Super Wii and it would still be in stores.

Sorry to hear but that's the risk you run of being an early adopter. If you're only interested in the Killer app exclusives you should probably wait before buying a new console because there's actually dozens of quality games to play on the system, exclusive or otherwise...🤷‍♂️

Yeah but 2 years after the release of the GBC, with a big amount of Game Boy Color games being GBC only, Pokémon Gold/Silver being on a Game Boy cartridge rather than a GBC cartridge, and then having Pokémon Cristal being GBC only, while the cover being identical to Gold/Silver made it more confusing

It is a subtitle that clearly tells us that the game is made for Switch 2. I'll take "boring" over confusing any day.

/thread in the first comment.

Nintendo has taken so much shit for their weird naming conventions over the years that it's nice to see them just tell you upfront exactly what to expect.

"New" is the worst of the bunch imho, because it was simultaneously vague and bland. It told you almost nothing about the product, while also doing nothing to jog your imagination. Oh, and it was tacky. Just bad all around.

Crystal is a weird outlier,
in Japan it had the GBC only mark on the cover (bottom left in the green wobbly circle)

but in the west it didn't. however, even that one still had the compatibility table on the back that clearly said only works on GBC and GBA.

It is really lame, and not too far for the lame "new"

But now that you have listed the names, they really should have named it: Switch Advance

It would have been so much cooler

My wife said I looked happy in my mancave, laid back with a malt liquor, calmly using Zelda Notes GPS navigation to hunt Korok seeds. I told her, "I paid $9.99 for this. Bitch don't kill my vibe."

I don't really care what Nintendo calls it as long as it's good. My only gripe is that after buying a Switch 2, I'm mostly replaying games I already own, since I'm not particularly interested in DK Bananza or Metroid Prime until they hit a price drop. I'd rather spend that kind of money on Ghost of Yōtei, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Hades II, or Kingdom Come: Deliverance II on other platforms. By the time I circle back to DK or Metroid, Nintendo will likely have released new Switch 2 exclusives, and there will probably be other games on other platforms that feel like a better value again anyway.

The Switch 2 just doesn't deliver performance that makes $80 games feel justified. It still feels like a damn Etch A Sketch.

Well tbf, Nintendo Switch 2 is the most boring nintendo console since the SNES. And even the SNES added buttons to their input device, what did Switch 2 add?

My first thought when I see "Nintendo Switch 2 Edition" is that the game is a port in some description, like a Switch 1 game "upgraded" to Switch 2. Seems weird they'd need to have it as a subtitle when the Switch 2 logo is already there.

As for boring, it's more bland or numbing to me, but things could be worse.

Switch 2 Edition would have sufficed but they wanted to have their trademark name all over it.

Seems kind of redundant too. If it's a remaster just say it's a remaster, if it's a new crossgen switch 2 game then the switch 2 box/logo is enough. 🤷‍♂️ Not that I'm complaining, its just a damn subtitle so who cares.

Yes they learned from Wii U and different verions of the 3DS. They avoided some of issues Microsoft experienced too with their naming standards.

You need to do Super NES or NES 2

Super NES 2 makes no sense. Its like a sequel to the Super NES.

Someone from Nintendo is on record saying they were tempted and close to calling it Super Switch, which would have made us all happy. But they have learned from experience and made the best choice slapping on a 2 like PlayStation.

It's got to be "New". I was playing "New" super bros wii earlier on my 2006 Wii. So dumb
Ive always hated the naming for that line of mario games

The last one used three of the subtitles mentioned.

NEW super mario bros U DELUXE

Feels like a weird comparison in some of these cases. I mean, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, for example, is a new title while Super Mario Bros. Wonder: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is an update of an already released title.

They're not meant to convey the same thing.

That said it is definitely a boring, straight to the point, subtitle.
