Marathon Releases March 5 '26 - $39.99

On the topic of onboarding in general. I played in the last alpha we had and it was bad. The tutorial is not very encompassing but this is a design choice. They want you to feel lost and get that sense of discovery.

I'm all for it and appreciate it but Arc Raiders Johnny will be confused as fuck.

Post some pictures if you can. Is the Thief as good as it look in real life?
I'll try to post some later. I live close to work so I ran home when I got the delivery notification just to bring it inside. Wasn't going to open it until later but couldn't resist. Pretty impressed on first look. Thief is already in the running for at least my top five favorite character designs ever, and they did it justice with the figure. Noticed one or two tiny air bubbles in the "water" but not a huge deal.

I'm just hoping the inevitable backlash from the Arc Raiders social sim types won't hurt the game too much.

Yeah agreed.

Tell you what i did like though, the missions basically gave very limited information and sent you on you merry way, no quest markers, nothing. Hopefully they don't change that although it will be lost anyway once you can Google everything.

I will be shocked if this game retains more than 20k average players once a month passes. I just think too much damage has been done and more to come from rage creators.

I'll be doing my best not to look things up and also not pay the wider community much mind. No I do not give a rats ass what the "meta" will be two weeks in, let me figure things out on my own thanks.

That's how I played Arc and marathon alpha. More enjoyment to be had figuring shit out on your own.

I couldn't get my Fortnite buddy to play ARC Raiders. He definitely hated the 200 different loot items that all felt like meaningless junk to him. I suspect that's a big reason people bounce off and I wonder if Marathon will fair a bit better because it doesn't have crafting in it like ARC. All the loot seems easier to understand. (Still complex obviously)

Thing with this game will be whatever the meta maybe you'll only have it until you lose it. If the best gear is also the hardest to obtain then the chase will be real.

Imagine going into the Marathon ship? The loot will be glorious.

The mod that added another barrel to the sawn off shotgun was nasty as fuck btw.

Love the direction they've gone with the music. In a sea of orchestral game soundtracks which don't usually do much for me, it really sticks out and fits the visual aesthetic perfectly.

Yeah. I fucking love the art, the world and the music.

Btw i dont remember, have you played any of the tests? The factions looks sick as hell too

This song fucks so hard.

This might be my worst take, but I think that song sucks.

It feels like something I could make if I was given a laptop with 20 different "cool sounds" loaded on it.

"This sound every 1.2 seconds. This sound every 2.4 seconds. This sound every 12 seconds..."

The GOAT extraction song is still...

That said, I don't really value music in an extraction game.

Not quite your worst take but its up there.

The music in this game slaps.

My first impressions of the music were also less charitable, felt too "random" as mentioned above. But then it clicked. Perfect mix of dark ambience and ominous soundscapes with the occasional banger theme rising to the surface. Can't wait to hear more and hoping for an LP release.

I'm mean pre ordered already tanked on Steam. If a platform will carry this game, It will be Steam.
The only people preordering the game are the ones who are sold on the game after playing the recent tests and did so when they went live.

See how the test lands, its certainly up in the air but i don't think it will out right bomb. The 7 people on gaf that have actually played it are all booked on the hype train.

I see that you said steam will carry this game. Why is that?

I didn't play the recent tests ngl

A man of faith. Nothing wrong with that.

May I ask why you are on board dispite all the negativity?
Lots of reasons. Some I've discussed in my longer posts in this thread and others. The game is coming at a perfect time for me, very interested in the extraction genre but bouncing off the longstanding existing entries. The art style feeling like it was made specifically for me. My general love of Bungie despite their missteps. Love of the classic trilogy and believe the hardcore extraction premise is a fitting evolution. The "controversies" being blown out of proportion far beyond reason. Being in the spring and fall playtests enough to see the potential here. Haven't played the glow-up versions but I've certainly seen enough to be very confident about the game's quality

Any guess about their post launch support? I think they gonna do bigger seasonal updates with wipes, instead of the drip feeding like ARC. We will get new maps, shells, hopefully new faction quests with new lore, nem enemy types etc. The longevity is there because of the quality PVP and there are tons of items to loot and craft different builds already.

Hope we get to see Lh'owon eventually.

This is exactly how I played Arc Raiders and honestly it was awesome. You only get to experience a new game once, why ruin it by looking everything up? I'll be doing the same thing here. I'm even contemplating not playing the free weekend and just going in blind.

I remember playing the test and for the first few hours I just kept thinking wow who the fuck is this actually aimed at? Harcore Tarkov players will dismiss it, casual Arc Raiders players won't like it. The usual suspects will cry that its not got a campaign or PVE mode etc.
Did you try Trials of Osiris in Destiny? I could be wrong but it is my understanding it it was pretty popular with the hyper-competitive PVP peeps. It wasn't an extraction mode, but it did have the idea of small squads fighting each other with one death per round and revives (sweaty). It seems like this is an expansion of that style of gameplay.

I played it a bit at the time and accepted it was the kind of mode you cannot compete in casually (no PvE mode, mic mostly required, pre-made team reqd) if you want to do well, and I expect there will be some element of that in Marathon too. Anyway that is who I think the game is for, at least as the core audience. Maybe Bungie will make it more casual friendly.

Just saw this on steam page

"Completing faction contracts grows your baseline power via season-long unlocks like Runner shell upgrades, stronger starting loadouts, expanded vault space, and specialized wares on offer for spare loot."

There will definitely be wipes each season. Also the little videos on the page looks sick. I watched a lot of videos from the april alpha in the past few days and goddamn it looks so much better now :D

Hopefully any stash space you unlock by doing seasonal stuff is a permanent unlock...

It wont be. Its tied to faction unlocks
So factional stuff is going to be reset too you think? I don't know how it all works but was hoping all of that sort of stuff was permanent.

I guess I never even thought about it but are wipes going to be mandatory in Marathon?

ofc. They will wipe everything. You can unlock a lot of stuff through faction reputation, they probably gonna add some new stuff each season

I saw this, but these are 1080p secreenshots. Thats not what i call high quality :)
Are you sure? I'll have to check my home PC later since I've been downloading everything on there as it's posted. You might have to dig for the good stuff. They've also removed some materials from that page, if there's anything good in my backups I'll upload and send a link.

You'll only be able to keep cosmetic based unlocks and lore stuff between seasons.
