Star Trek: Starfleet Academy — Teaser Trailer

This show is an awful, and would have never been greenlit in the 90's the with Next Generation and DS9. Truly bad.

Maybe, if Paramount is serious about acquiring other studios than WB, then maybe they should raise cash and sell Star Trek to Apple or someone who will do it justice.

oh noooooo...

This might be where they fire that kurz guy who runs Star Trek, apparently the viewership is in the low thousands.
Who thought it would be ANYTHING else? Just the pre-production and the casting should have clued in paramount that this was gonna be a disaster, much less the first few days of dallies with that ugly cinematography, cringe dialogue, and questionable acting choices.

How many chips do they gotta throw on one end of the woke scale before they realize its totally off balance? Just how slowly they grind out a meager 10 eps of SNWs should tell them that something is VERY VERY amiss with how they are making these things. These shows could be done on like 2 good sets (bridge and an engineering/power core/engine area) and a few nice models. Everything else could be on adhoc sets and locations. Instead they go SO HARD on production value for a bunch of worthless shit and they cast bland actors with no personality or ability to fill a character in just a few scenes because everything is sanded down and focus grouped into oblivion. Makes me sick.

One thing I hate so much about that "prank war" episode (3) was that these cadets are treated like children, and they do things that should have severe consequences or even ejection from the academy, and the authorities just shrug it off.

The transport nude and semi nude students from the locker room into public places. They steal genetics from a high ranking official and use it to replicate his eye. They create a dramatic biohazard in the dorms with restricted plants. They hack security systems.

Any of this by Wesley at the academy would be met with an expulsion or at the very least a major reprimand and setback of his rank and progress. But this show is apparently modeled on "Xmen First Class and Hogwarts" (according to Kurtzmann... found an interview where he said this lol).

I think they started off with good intentions but now I'm convinced these latest ones like this and Section 31 are some kind of tax write-off.

No I don't think its that, I'm pretty sure its just Kurtzman and his band of peeps pushing their personal world views into Star Trek, a big franchise, in order to help push "The Message". They probably think they are doing good work. 😂

I want the paramount execs that signed off on this hundreds of millions of dollars atrocity named and shamed. How long has it been since a Star Trek property actually brought in $$$?

According to this article, which doesn't really say exactly how they are calculating "streamer revenue", the Star Trek IP is STUPIDLY PROFITABLE and even something like Academy is just a drop in the bucket and could almost be written off as a retirment gift to Kurtzman.

2.6 BILLION(!!!!!!!!!!) in the past 5 years or so. Now that is almost assuredly some serious 'funny munny' accounting and I doubt that much $$$ would be gone from streaming had Star Trek not been available, but it does suggest that the shows, or access to the older ones at least, drives a lot of subscriber retention as well as some rental $$ and probably ads.

If this were actually true and factual, they'd have no problem giving DS9 and Voyager the HD remaster treatment that TNG got. TNG's 7 seasons were all reportedly done for $13m. About the cost of a single episode of this slop.

You'd think, as the breadbasket IP they would want the most pristine and amazing sets available to sell to their faithful fans. But I suspect that after TOS and TNG the attach rate to the rest falls off a cliff for physical media, though I would agree Voyager and DS9 especially deserve a quality archival release.

RedLetterMedia addressed this recently on one of their new DS9 chats... their argument is that (sadly) the economics that made something like the TNG remaster possible were based on the high expectation of a profit via blu-ray purchasers, but physical media like that is a much smaller, vanishing market today.

I'm gonna get a load of hate for this, but I don't think its that bad actually for what it is

The most recent episode (four) was genuinely good, possibly the strongest episode of live action New Trek. It explored a theme without preaching, the characters were treated seriously and without any stupid jokes, and the only instance of memberberries, the Aaron Satie reference, felt appropriate: it was just plausible enough that someone whose judgements and speeches shaped the principles of the Federation would still be known hundreds of years into the future, and worked within the episode given it was exploring the importance of culture and history in binding people together over time. It did wonders for Lura Thok, the Klingon/Jem'Hadar hybrid, taking a character who had previously been an insufferably shouty joke and giving her some dignity and solemnity: I've always found Gina Yashere to be exhausting, even when she was a comedienne on UK panel shows, but she did good work in her conversation with Jay-Den (whose character I also enjoyed in this, though that name is irredeemably godawful). Yes, I can quibble some details - the Doctor continues to be shoehorned into the show without any rhyme or reason - but it was the first time in as long as I can remember watching New Trek that I felt engaged (no pun intended) with the story, the characters and the theme, without the show sabotaging itself for a bad joke, fourth wall break or nod to the past. I'm not holding out much hope for the remainder of the series to maintain this standard given the impossibly low bar New Trek has established, but if it keeps at least trying to tell stories, explore ideas and write actual characters, that'd represent a big step in the right direction.

I am watching DS9 - and I finished season one. It is good. I found a copy that had been AI enhanced to 960p and it looks pretty good.

What I really want is a remaster. Have they remastered Babylon 5?

Could they? I'm guessing the CG was all low resolution stuff for TV back then, not models on film with a higher resolution master.

But damn, do loves me some B5, I hear rumors every now and then that J. Michael Strayinski (cough cough) is gonna reboot it but sadly few of the OG cast are left :(

Hmmm, says here there is a high res version on HBO max with live action in 4k and upsampled effects. From a few years ago.

edit: so I looked, and it's not on HBO anymore, at least not in my region. Its for sale on amazon with a HD version. I fired up roku where it is free and....it's not muddy 480p but it isn't crystal clear either, especially the space scenes. May be compression or the roku feed though, but I suspect the show just isn't gonna look great for today without a lot of work.

Phew, they made some choices on that show, that's for sure :P

But it is some of the best characters and writing in a sciFi show that has a complete 5 year arc that gets set up in season one, and plays out in the end. We just don't get that type of show anymore.

Well, a 4 year arc and then some stuff happened after :P

I do need to get back on the TNG/DS9 horse and if I can find an easy way to stream B5, add it to the mix. I like to watch this stuff in the mornings when making breakfast because its safe for my kids, tv these days is basically F bomb central with the occasional surprise boob or butt shot so the classic stuff is easier to have on.

Remember, S1 of DS9 is the worst of it. The show gets better with every season, right up until the end of it. Enjoy the ride!

On the initial run I watched all but the last season because my local stations did not pick it up in syndication.

Can you link me to it? I only have S6/7 remastered :< 'ai upscaled'

Not watching this trash but I look forward to Mr Plinkett shitting on it (he probably wont tho)

Holy shit.

Oh good grief that looks terrible!

The kilt, if that's what that is supposed to be, has a VERY specific length. Back of the pleats touches the back of the knee. There is no mid thigh, and it doesn't go to the calves. That length, as well as the front apron and back pleats, gives a more masculine appearance as well as working better with the male body type.

A fucking tennis skirt like this....JFC.

Holy Shit I know I'm probably late on this, but they really did let us know ahead of time the quality of the show we were getting with the main promotional image

I mean if you took away the name of the show there's almost nothing here that says "Star Trek"

I'm confused. I just watched Dave Cullen's review of the new episode and he described it as being really bad, but then I went to Reddit Star Trek and was told that it might be one of the best Star Trek episodes ever and everyone was crying as they watched.

I guess Kingon's in dresses and 4th wall breaking characters are more moving than I imagined.

From Warrior to Yes Ma'am.

So in the future, they must have banned so many words that hurt feelings, it is now reduced too..."eat glass".
