Marathon Releases March 5 '26 - $39.99

I'm not even sure if a have ever said that I actually deslike THE game.

I want the game to fail due to Bungie's wokeness 🤷🏻‍♂️. (I don't even care if our special boy Men in boxes clown himself again)... If the game is great, it should find success, im not saying anything controversial, right?
That doesn't make it better lol. I get there will always be ppl coming in these threads just to stir shit but it gets old cause all they have to say is OMG WOKE or OMG STOLED ARTE like come on now.

People are dooming Highguard for example in the same way (the game is shallow but fun - does NOT deserve all the hate, thanks Geoff).

But don't forget the use of pronouns or the art theft. Pleased be outraged or at least laugh with me when it doesn't hit 500k ccu.

Meanwhile the rest of us will just enjoy a great game or move on if it doesn't deliver.

People these days are way too invested in things other than games just being good and fun, and it sucks. Doesn't help that a lot of those same people are weird drama chasers. 🤷‍♂️

Whatever happened to not paying attention to things you don't like or don't care for? Lives would be much better if people just did that, lol. I get being hyped about a product, buying it, and it sucks, we've all been there multiple times. But it's weird to me to see such responses about F2P games. Cool, game sucks? Move on. Why waste your time on it? Lol.

Great movie, try living your life more like the dude instead of being a chump.
How can you call me a chump when there are people hyped and ready to defend and justify a shitty company like Bungie just because they're invested in the promise of a game they want to like?

I think you are projecting your insecurities and need for validation around marathon; you want people to like marathon in order for you to be able to enjoy it. 🤷🏻‍♂️

What are some games you like, Chorizo? I'm curious how impeccable your taste is.

The PSX FF trilogy + Parasite Eve
Silent Hill 2
MGS3
Shadow of the colossus
God of War (1-3 + 2018 reboot)
Ridge Racer Type 4
X-COM enemy unknown
2D fallouts
Roller coaster tycoon 2
🤷🏻‍♂️
Mostly older stuff, then. Some good picks. If you played those games when new that would make you a bit older than I am, although I'd count a lot of 90s and 00s classics among my all-time faves too. Skimmed your post history and it seems like you're pretty down on modern gaming as a whole. A lot of ranting about "purple hairs" and "the woke," a lot of shitposting and provocation in drama threads, and not much positive contribution to any discourse you've ever waded into. I dunno, maybe I missed something. Why do you spend your precious time on earth acting like this? If gaming passed you by than you gotta unplug, it just ain't healthy. I don't like JRPGs or fighting games but I don't feel the need to pull a drive-by every time I see a thread on one. I'd recommend spending less time on twitter and not listening so much to the grummz/pirat_nation types, they're not good for you, man. You'll thank me in the long term.

Sure there are people on both sides of the fence, as it's always the case. I'll only speak for myself here but I did get into one of the play tests and it's the reason I became so hyped for the game, I loved it.

I did insta-wishlist the game back when it was announced because I figured it would be a quality product. And though the April alpha was not it, it does seem like they're turning it around. That remains to be seen when it comes to release and actual performance but I know what I'm getting into here, I think the devs know they need to knock it the fuck out of the park and I have faith they will.

Hopefully it can withstand the sea of hate that likely won't go away.

Gaming discourse ≠ playing Videogames

Ok then. Nearly 20k messages on a supposed enthusiast forum. Let me know if a single one contains anything of substance.
What do you mean by "substance" like... an insight of sorts?
You can check out the MS ABK acquisition thread. I basically laid down what is happening now.

🤔. I terms of game design :

There are three types of gamers:
1. The one that wants escapism/fantasy achieved by the setting of the game, art, music, story.
2. The one that enjoys the act of play. shooting, jumping, running, navigating menus, etc..
3. the one that enjoys understanding mechanics/systems and figuring out the META.

of course, a gamer has different ratios of these characteristics

To me, Souls games skewed heavenly on numbers 1 and 3.

so...what kind of games offer the number 3 like Souls games do in today's AAA market?... i don't think there are that many. A lot of the current AAA games feel exoteric.
and their design language feels overly familiar between them....the sense of discovery not just for the world but also for their secret mechanics or systems makes those games feel like a mystery ready to be untangled

I'm lukewarm on the controller but I'm getting it anyway. Fuck me, man. I'm gonna single-handedly keep Bungie afloat if that's what it takes.

If it turns out it has no legs in the long run then I'll move on, its just a game.

Anti-fans are so prevalent these days. Like someone else said, used to be that people just ignored what they didn't like and move on but now they spent as much energy disliking something compared to stuff they do enjoy. They hate watch streams of it or spam the chat of their favorite streamers who are playing it, wasting hours upon hours spent with the thing they have a distaste for.

It's baffling behavior.

Yea man I'm just going to ignore the clowns moving forward. They're obviously not gamers so their opinion means Jack shit. Still loving Arc Raiders and I'm looking forward to playing Marathon.

Dont say this :( Its a bungie game, it wont die and its also quality. Hopefully Sonys expectations are not sky high tho
Does anyone have the most recent numbers for how many devs are on this vs. Destiny? It certainly seems like a smaller-scoped project in comparison. Its premise is inherently more niche and daring.

Bungie and Sony have made the right moves by extensively playtesting the game and using the delay to incorporate a lot of feedback. Recent successes (BF6, ARC) took similar routes and recent failures (Concord, Highguard) did not, and suffered a lot from lack of real playtesting. Hopefully there are no more fuckups and the game can overcome the negativity.

I think its around 300. No small number.

I also think even if this was a 50,000 to 100,000 averaged players at a time game there is more limited monetization available. Skins and battle passes.

Destiny offered more ways especially with expansions.

It's safe to say that from a "save the studio" perspective they have their most talented folks working on Destiny 3 now. A small batch is keeping D2 alive on life support. A strong ambitious team on marathon with room for expansion if it succeeds.

It could be a 60-40 split in a few years if D3 to Marathon assets if Marathon is successful to their metrics.

I'm just here to enjoy the game until it isn't. For arc raiders that was 75 hours pushed to120. Tarkov probably only 200. Marvel rivals was likely 350-500. But Destiny 1&2 combined? Two thousand easy.

I could see them charging for skins or new endgame content (I know there's been speculation of that) but it really depends on where the game is as after the first year. It's weird because Destiny 2 feels like it's in maintenance mode despite still getting full expansions. Regardless, Destiny 3 is a long way out.

In retrospect I wish I had gotten into Destiny 2 much earlier on instead of missing the boat. Every time I go back to give it another shot I can tell it's a great game that's just overwhelming. Would have been a better use of my time than some of the other garbage I've sunk hours into.

I'm not the type to sink thousands of hours into a single game but there's always the chance for something to come along and change that. Bungie has a good a chance as anyone. I just put 120 hours into BF6 and had 250 in BF2042 which I liked more. Now I'm going hard on Arc at least until Marathon drops. I think the most I've ever done is like 450 hours into Fallout 76. Those were dark times. Should have been playing Destiny 2 instead.

It makes absolutely no sense to me. There are so many negative things that exist in the world (and we experience as we get older), why would you want to focus on negativity in your hobbies? Even more so, potentially one of your largest ones? I don't get it. Why not just play and focus the games you do enjoy? Take time to look for new games that interest you, ones that are currently out, or coming out so you have something to look forward to and be excited about, etc. The amount of time that's spent on aimless and pointless mudslinging could be spent on better things. Like, gaming, or anything else more positive and/or constructive, lol. Some people REALLY drown themselves in it too, it sounds so exhausting.

The intense shilling is going to be bad luck. This isn't Arc Raiders, careful, boys.
Shilling is one thing, being excited or hyped about something is another. I think a lot of people here that are looking forward to it are doing just that. If it were somehow to come out and not be good at all, I'm sure everyone would move on, it's just what happens, we've all been there multiple times, lol.

Personally, I tried Arc Raiders, and it didn't click. I'm willing to give Marathon a shot, and if it doesn't, well then onto the next. 🤷‍♂️ I think the only other game I'm genuinely interested in that exists in the same realm is Hunger. Still so much is unknown, but I really liked the vibe and how it looks. But that isn't surprising considering I felt the same way about Hunt: Showdown.

Yeah this is the one game out of Sony recently I'd like to see succeed simply because it's so visually unique. It's attracting bad voodoo, though.

The game is just tough to discuss at this point because of everything that's happened. Numerous dev controversies, backlash to GAAS, backlash to Bungie, gaming discourse generally being in the shitter. I haven't looked forward to a game this much since I was a kid - it feels like it was made just for me - but I'm trying to keep realistic expectations despite my own hype. There are definitely fans of this game getting way ahead of themselves, but this thread is mostly just a handful of us sharing our excitement, not much else to do for now. Some of the hype from Men_in_Boxes Men_in_Boxes is absolutely insane, but that's his shtick. So we'll see. Interesting launch ahead.

I'll say the majority of my destiny time is destiny 1. That's likely 1400 of the 2000 hours. D2 had severe peaks and valleys. D1 was just all peaks for me.

I've also lost over 1000 hours in Dota 2, and probably 1500 in league of legends.

I know warframe is good and I had a buddy get me into it about 100 hours, but he basically told me where to go and what to do. So when I came back to it years later to try it on my own I had no clue wtf I was doing or why I was doing it. That's one I should revisit and commit to but I may just wait for their next game or no man's sky dev next game.

Yeah, exactly. Man, honestly in terms of the bad voodoo stuff, it depends on what it all is of course, but if it's just people trying to drag it for whatever reason I'm just gonna ignore it. But if something looks bad to me, that's of course a different story. If I'm genuinely interested in the game, I'll play it, and if I enjoy it, a bunch of people telling me it sucks won't change how I feel about it. Now, if I play it, it doesn't click, or I just don't think it's good, then that's another story, haha.

All the bad voodoo I've seen revolves around old news like, "LOL STOLEN ART" or "LOL MID GAMEPLAY", which both have been resolved. The art especially, but the gameplay and mechanics do appear to have been adjusted so they're trying to do something.

Back in the day I was bummed when Destiny didn't come to PC since I was a PC-only gamer. I finally checked it out last year and I didn't play too far, but it's cool that it's still up and playable, although 30fps + controller only were rough for me. Obviously Bungie are the masters of making FPS fun on a controller but I'll always prefer KBM.

Your Warframe story is like Helldivers 2 for me. I played that game with a friend who was no-lifing it at launch and it kinda ruined the fun because he couldn't stop himself from explaining everything and running ahead to do everything himself. Hurt the experience a lot and I never ended up putting too much time into it. Some people don't like it but I really like how a lot of games these days are designed for 3man teams instead of 4man. Getting that fourth player is becoming really tough when trying to coordinate my group who all have their own lives etc.

All my "insane" takes:

1) Marathon will hit over 200k CCU peak after launch.
Status: A 2ft putt.

2) Battle Royale is dead and Extraction killed it.
Status: FACT

3) Marathon will settle well north of Hunt Showdowns 15k Steam CCU average.
Status: A duh

4) If Bungie made an Extraction Adventure instead of an Extraction Shooter, they'd be a lock to have the 4th largest economy in the world.
Status: It is written in the Holy texts.

We will look back on these four truths as common sense in due time.

Kinda going back and forth on this game. Really not a fan of extraction shooters but... I do know that bungie knows solid gunplay. Even if they are filled with a bunch of weirdos. Somehow that dna has followed all the way from the original bungie and continues to the current not the same version. Then I get conflicted an say to myself. Why not just get Tarkov instead since that is already the premier fps extraction shooter? Hmmmm maybe it is just best to wait and see.

What were the problems for the game that caused the delays to begin with? I know there was some drama over art stuff(dont really care). Like what are the problems that matter?

Tarkov is still a janky ass unfinished game and its really hard to get into. Marathon aint gonna be mainstream, but its hell of a lot easier for newcomers to the genre than tarkov ever will be
