Battle of the ports: Salamander 2

This video looks at the various ports of Konami's 1996 shooter - Salamander 2, as was in-vogue during that time, pre-rendered graphics were the order of the day and it is featured in this game also...what surprises me though is the state of the modern versions of the game, compared to what the other platforms had got (reason why as explained in the video...)

Damn, cool music and visuals! I'll try this on the Saturn.

Too bad I suck at those games, but it won't hurt to try :goog_relieved:

series x version with slowdown
how is the ps5 version?
Not sure on that one, I thought DF Retro may have picked this up on their review of the collection but I don't think they have....would be interesting to know if the developer's are aware of this, and why did they choose it to be this way..

Or maybe the newest port with slowdown is actually arcade accurate and is presented as intended. MAME often does not emulate slowdown accurately especially later arcade titles.

Without comparing to the actual game running on the arcade PCB at the correct frame rate you cannot really say for certain that the newest port is emulated incorrectly. Official Saturn and PlayStation ports at the time were not always accurate to arcade especially when it came to slowdown so it's not a good comparison to make either.

Apparently Konami Japan always gave their best when it came to titles they did for the Saturn...and it shows that they didn't opt for a bare bones emulation like the PSP version

My favorite console port is the Saturn one. Konami's Saturn ports just felt right in a way that they didn't on any other platform.

I love Salamander 2, personally - very satisfying game and beautiful to look at. I typically stick to the PCB if I want to play it, and I ain't letting that thing go.

That is a shame if the lag didn't exist originally. One would hope for updates.

Konami clearly had to do their work porting over to the PS1 and Saturn from the GX2 hardware. Apparently they did fine on both consoles.

Semi-OT: Fingers crossed for more Gradius collections, including first-party licensed home ports.
