Marathon Releases March 5 '26 - $39.99

Kinda going back and forth on this game. Really not a fan of extraction shooters but... I do know that bungie knows solid gunplay. Even if they are filled with a bunch of weirdos. Somehow that dna has followed all the way from the original bungie and continues to the current not the same version. Then I get conflicted an say to myself. Why not just get Tarkov instead since that is already the premier fps extraction shooter? Hmmmm maybe it is just best to wait and see.

What were the problems for the game that caused the delays to begin with? I know there was some drama over art stuff(dont really care). Like what are the problems that matter?
I've only played a little Tarkov but it's as hardcore as it gets. It gives you almost nothing to go off of. For example, it doesn't even tell you where the extracts are. Its emphasis on realism and obscure mechanics can be incredibly punishing. It's a one of a kind game that can suck people in for thousands of hours, there's nothing else like it that I'm aware of. But getting into it seems like a steep uphill climb. There's a DLC that lets you play PvE, I think there are mods for that too. The other main exfil shooter niches are:
  1. Hunt: Showdown. Unlike the others, not about scavenging and looting. Single objective. Gunplay is largely about single-shot weapons that prioritize accuracy. Very cool weird west setting. Playerbase seems stable but pretty hardcore, lots of long-time players.
  2. ARC Raiders. If you play friendly, game will usually match you with similar players. Very PvE focused, emphasizes the social sim aspects. PvP is fun but shallow. Loot and quests seem kinda boring based on what I've played so far. I'm having a great time with it, but the most "casual" of the bunch. Currently has no real endgame content.
  3. Marathon. Based on my playtest experience and more recent footage and impressions from others. Highly PvP focused, maps feel like PvP spaces with open areas between. Different shells/classes will enable different playstyles, mobility, stealth, medic etc. Team-focused although devs have added solos mode. Loot is more compelling than Arc, directly impacts your character/weapon builds so you can go zero to hero within a single round. Fantastic Bungie gunplay. Endgame content is looking pretty compelling. WIll be heavy on the storytelling aspect with a big voice cast, high concept sci-fi lore etc. Less casual than Arc, certainly less hardcore than Tarkov.
If you're really wondering Marathon vs. Tarkov, well, Tarkov is hardcore realism simulator and Marathon is heavily stylized and trying to bring that classic Bungie PvP feel to extraction with a class/ability twist. In practice they couldn't really be more different. Marathon will have a free preview before launch (date TBD) so you can always check it out then.

Yeah, ill be leveling this faction first.
Well at first there will be only 1 faction no? 2 more opens up later and the rest after that. I havent even looked at their skilltrees in the test. Only saw a couple of talents. Wonder if there will be new events on the maps since we last played it

My memory might be fuzzy but I was under the impression there were 5 factions and you can level whichever you choose via the contracts offered from each?

I may have just made this up btw.

  1. Traxus
  2. CyAc
  3. NuCal
  4. SekGen
  5. MIDA
  6. Arachne

A little video about the interior design in this game without commentary. Mind you this is from the april alpha so the game will look much better at release. No tweet today, because its the weekend so i thought im gonna post something instead :)

Talk about lifeless and sterile.

Idk I feel like we need to distance ourselves from the April alpha because all it does is draw in tourists for drive-bys. It just doesn't look good.

Someone keeps posting clips on reddit of their April gameplay and it just isn't what Marathon needs.

I know we're starving for content now but we're almost there.

This is really old footage now. It's missing th new lighting, the weather, time of day, the AI roaming the map, the events that can occur, etc.
Ok, I like Bungie so I want it to be good, and I'm enjoying the extraction gameplay currently but only Raiders, I'll wait on reviews though.

Reviews are meaningless for this type of game. The gaming press are generally fucking useless at PVP. Best waiting on full honest impressions from folks you know are solid on here imo.

Trying the free weekend would be your best barometer. You know best after all.

The interiors have been looking great since the first alpha. I don't expect much to change there. The outside what was needing further work on the lighting. Not much on the interior is going to change.

Every game has previews 1 month before launch. Dont think this will be an exception
Yeah, just think that will come in the form of another vidoc and the preview weekend. Let the game speak for itself.

The videos on the NDA discord channel from the December test test look amazing.

I think we'll get 1 more video about their post launch support and seasonal plans

Yeah didn't they promise a roadmap before launch?

Eager to see what they have planned. Expecting a new section of the Marathon ship each season for endgame, reworks of the existing ones along with a new regular map every other season.

That would be hitting it out of the park for me.

Yes they did. New shells per season is probably expected aswell. Wonder how they gonna handle the faction quests, because they tell a story here so repeating them every season sounds dumb, atleast the story ones

Think they have set it up were we'll see different variants of existing shells.

See lots of speculation on how the fungus plays into the story as well.

I spent all that time hating on the game, but now, after seeing some gameplay videos, I'm really digging what I'm seeing. I'll wait for the reception, but I'm definitely considering buying it around the launch window.

Just try it yourself this month. No point waiting for someone else opinion
