Metal Gear Solid 4 Remaster | PS3 vs PS5 | Graphics Comparison Trailer

Yep that's definitely a PS3 game running at higher resolution. Looks like very minimal changes/improvements to textures other than the resolution bump.

I wonder if the removal of DoF is due to performance problems it causes at higher resolutions or if its strength is tied to the resolution and increasing that to a value higher than ever considered during initial development makes it seem like its off.

There was one shot where it looked pretty similar so I'm going with "disabled on a case by case basis for performance reasons".

Normally I don't mind DoF effects being turned off to gain frames because they're implemented and used poorly, but with MGS4 it seems sort of integral to the presentation, without it your eye is drawn to detail it shouldnt be, like the Frog at the back of the pack in the multi-shot.

The bloom being toned down/removed (and hopefully replaced with good HDR) makes sense in the world of modern displays but it does also kinda make some scenes look flat in comparison, like the tablecloth in the Big Mama shot.

Its not just bloom removal, it looks like they interpreted the gamma differently. Hopefully not a battle of artistic intent vs. technical correctness incoming, though I do feel for people doing work like this, damned if you do and dammed if you don't.

I'd actually love to see a "making of" for this. Must have been a pain in the ass to port but it looks great and seems to maintain the original visuals with a bump in resolution. I played it for the first time a few years ago so I won't be getting to it for a while but I hope it has a smooth launch. Glad to see it's no longer stuck on PS3.

A great Metal Gear game.

I liked it on PS3 for its gadgets and futuristic setting.

The best fight, in my opinion.

Although Sons of Liberty is, for me, the best Metal Gear game. This Metal Gear still looks fantastic today.

Please, let me turn off the yellow/green filter, game looks so much better without it

So hyped for this, I got the platinum years ago, gonna do it again no doubt, also playing Rex vs Ray again is gonna be glorious, one of the coolest most fanservice game ever

The bloom and gamma issue seems to be a thing some modders found out a while ago, mainly the Fusion Fix team for GTA IV on PC, they discovered why bloom intensity and gamma was different at higher resolutions and that's because those stock values are only calculated at 720p, so increasing the resolution diminishes the effect.

It's an often overlooked thing with modern ports of older titles and has been around since the PS2 remaster days on PS3/Xbox 360.

They toned down the bloom a bit.

Good.

It might not be reduced bloom. What HDR can do is reveal additional detail within the bloom, which would normally be lost by white clipping when the image was output into SDR.

Here is a work-in-progress HDR mod for Halo: Reach showing this:

Bloom has not been touched, the HDR is simply no longer clipping the white.

The Youtube trailer for MGS4 will have been authored in SDR, but it is possible it was tonemapped to that back from HDR.

I feel like the detail is already there, it's just marred by the sub HD resolution for the most part. (on the original PS3 version)
Yeah, John Linnerman showed this when he did a video on Motorstorm and showed it running on RPCS3 with forced 16xAF. A lot of texture work from that era isn't bad it's just that hardware wise we were lucky to see a lot of early gen games use more than Trilinear or 2xAF which blurred them to shit at the slightest angle.

That's a beautiful mod btw.

It make me wonder: if this is truly a native port of MGS4 to PC, what modders will do with the game?

You can find it on the HDR Den Discord:

If it turns out MGS4 doesn't have HDR, it will no doubt get it via a RenoDX mod.

Not whilst MGSV exists.

That game is an absolute stain on the series. Never been so disappointed in one of my favourite series dropping the ball so hard as I was with that pos.

It's the RE6 of MGS.

I actually never played Phantom Pain due to how disappointed I was with MGS4. I thought Kojima dropped the ball hard after the excellent PS1 and 2 games. Is Phantom Pain universally disliked by the fanbase? Is that why Konami is leaving it out of this Volume 2 of Master Collection?
