Mega Man X: Viral Nightmare

IbizaPocholo

NeoGAFs Kent Brockman

A reimagined take on the most notorious X game that aims to be a love letter to the original game that expands on its original concepts and introduces many new ones to make a new experience that doesn't simply replace the original.

Key Differences:
  • It's now widescreen. Enemies appear on screen faster and you get to see more of the level at once, no longer feeling cramped.
  • New level design and concepts. X6 is a very dramatic game with polarising gimmicks that have now been fully expanded with more refined ideas and plenty of surprises.
  • Armour parts are now equipped piece by piece and have new multi-purpose abilities. Armour pieces can be mixed and matched like in X8.
  • Parts and reploid system overhaul. Reploids don't hold parts, instead they give you nightmare souls which are used as currency to buy parts.
  • Parts are now unlocked after defeating bosses. The player's rank now determines how many parts can be equipped at once. You increase your rank by saving reploids.
  • Brand new content such as new parts and redone special weapons to make sure they all have a utility and purpose in X's arsenal.

Batch 1 currently includes:
  • 4 Armour Pieces to collect
  • 17 swappable Parts to purchase
  • Eurasia Crashsite (intro stage)
  • Amazon Ruins (Commander Yammark's stage)
  • Inami Temple (Rainy Turtloid's stage)
  • Magma Furnace (Blaze Heatnix's stage)
  • Weapon Center (Infinity Mijinion's stage)

This is... not something I would've expected to exist. Mega Man X6 is a bit of a mess, but still a game I've been meaning to revisit at some point.

At the very least, it has an absolutely incredible soundtrack. Can't take that from it.

It's probably the X game I've replayed the least amount of times, (outside of 7 which.....is just beyond saving), but I've still beaten it a total of 8 times, and I think that's probably largely due to how goddamn good the OST is. It's better than 5's OST by a lot in my opinion, but it's a far worse game in literally every other regard. Still though, there's something redeeming there.

How does this game address the last boss fella, believe his name was Gate. He's the guy right before Sigma, hovers around in a gold suit of armor, can pass through walls, is invincible to all damage except his splintered shots, (and the splintered shots also hurt you and only go in specific directions and don't go through the floors), and there's like three tiny surfaces that you have to keep jumping between and a pit beneath you. Basically this boss fight was the malicious conception of someone with a deeply rooted hatred of mankind, so I'm curious if this version reimagines that into something slightly less suicide inducing?

I don't understand why they said Megaman X6 was the hardest.

I didn't find it very difficult and I liked it... I would give it around an 8 rating, because you started with the best armor of the series.

the Mega Man X8 Demake was pretty damn fantastic... so I'll keep an eye on this for sure.

the later X games could all need some adjustments or full remakes. anything past X4 is highly flawed or straight up garbage (X7)

It had bullshit with the Nightmare effects or whatever they were called. I remember there was one where the level would be pitch black except for a small window around X, which made some levels nigh impossible. It felt like the sole goal of that system was just to make everything more annoying.

Whoever made UP AND ATTACK be a DOWNWARDS ATTACK with Zero should go to hell with a fanfare.
