LTTP: Resident Evil 2 Remake

WHY THE FUCK DID IT TAKE ME SO LONG TO PLAY THIS ???

So anyway I know Requiem is coming and I never played the series since I get scared easily (in fact I have not played a survival horror at all except first 15 minutes of Alien: Isolation). So I asked Chat GPT if you are all a bunch of masochists, and he said no:

Yes — being scared is absolutely part of the appeal. But it's not the same kind of fear you feel in real danger.

The key difference is controlled fear.

In games like Alien: Isolation, Resident Evil 2, or Silent Hill 2, the player experiences:

1. Safe Threat

Your brain reacts to danger cues (sound, darkness, pursuit), but you know you're physically safe.

That creates adrenaline without real-world risk.

2. Mastery Over Fear

You're not just being scared — you're learning to manage it.
  • Controlling breathing
  • Making decisions under pressure
  • Escaping situations

  • Overcoming fear creates a strong sense of competence.

3. Emotional Intensity

Fear heightens attention and immersion.

Everything feels sharper: sounds, footsteps, doors opening.

That intensity makes victories feel meaningful.

4. Dopamine After Relief

The moment you survive or reach a save point produces a powerful relief response.

That relief can feel extremely rewarding.

No.3 hits so fucking hard.

So then I watched this video:

where the guy goes: "Leon is the MVP here, so to know his story play RE2R and RE4R, btw these are one of the best in the franchise.

So I got both of these games, loaded RE2R and started playing (Leon first).

shocked holy shit GIF

The RPD is some Rubiks cube masterpiece of a level. Also, this shit is scary. Also, fuck you Capcom for not giving me an infinite durability knife. Also, that corridor on the third floor looks sus af.

Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

P.S. I am so not playing the FPP ones (RE7, RE8).

Don't feel bad getting scared OP, it's a natural response. I think it depends on your exposure to horror. I've watched a steady stream of horror movies since I was a kid, though now a days I can't stomach gore and steer clear (games are fine) . Even I had to drop Alien Isolation. It was giving me some serious anxiety for some reason. Still, want to give it another go.

RER2 is such a good game. Steadily unlocking rooms, solving puzzles and exploring the police headquarters is an S tier experience. Combat and visuals are also so so good.

Of the RE games personally I found 7 the scariest.

Enjoy your stay in Racoon City 😈

Probably one of my most replayed games. I'm currently on 2nd run with Leon. Will do another one with Claire, and before this run with Leon I did a run with Claire as Jill via mods. I think I put probably 70+ hours on this game. The rpd is perfection imo, it never gets old for me no matter how many times I play it.

It's good, but short, and once you figure out and look under the hood of Mr. Xs tricks and patterns it loses some of its lustre.
I agree with your tag if you see a thread where someone is excited to experience not only a game but an entire a genre for the first time and your instinct is to try and take away the magic. I bet you'd take your kids to a magic show, wait until they're having fun, then ruin it (and then tell them Santa's not real).
Seriously? I remember beating the original in about 90 minutes 😳
Not the first time through you didn't, no way

Literally nobody gives a shit what you think either. 🤷‍♂️

I know reading is hard but try to follow along. I started off my post by saying that yes it is good. RE2 Remake is one of my favorite games from the last 10 years, where did I say anything about it being shit to illicit such a butt-hurt reply lol? Do us both a favor and hit the ignore user button on my profile 😆.

Also, where am I wrong? It's short and Mr. X can be gamed hard once you know the routine.

Re3 Remake (if its next for OP) is such a let down comparatively.

Obviously. Was probably 3/3.5 hours way back in 98 but I vividly remember beating it very quickly on replays. I think my record was just over an hour with Leon.

The game was mind blowingly amazing my first 8 playthroughs but by the 10th playthrough it felt kind of short and I could kind of see the patterns. I give it a C-.

If you don't understand why it's a faux pas to pull back the curtain when the most likely outcome is diminishing someone's experience then I don't know what to tell you.

I was going to say! Replays can definitely be quick, you can S/A rank while being incredibly safe on routing and item pick ups. Different game, but 3 being beat in about 40-45 minutes is probably the fastest I've seen a mainline title be beat.

Resident Evil 2 Remake is probably my favourite Resident Evil game, and easily in my Top 10 games of all time. Do I wish they'd done better with the A/B scenarios? Yeah. But does that detract from the fact that the game is an absolute masterpiece? No. Enjoy the ride, friend!

Nice you're getting to experience these for the first time OP. Resident Evil games are fantastic.

Also just so you know RE8 has a third-person toggle so if you think the game looks good you can play the entirety of it that way

Ok, so I think I cannot knife every zombie since the knife will break, I wonder if they all get up all the time?

I am also wondering how the zombies act - I think you need to get close to trigger them and if you do they follow you everywhere? I don't think so, but I think there are scripted moments like the west wing right at the start where you need to think fast and dash for the gate to get back to the main hall.

It's one of the best Resident Evil games, if not THE best. RE1 Remake and OG RE4 are the only other ones in contention for me.

RE2R definitely has that Capcom secret sauce from the past. Such a good mix of adventure, exploration, and arcade action that's greater than the sum of its parts, wrapped into an incredible atmosphere. No frills, no nonsense, and high replay value to boot. I didn't expect to enjoy this game so much.

The headshot system was utter bunk. And I can't stand having enemies in a game that can't be killed because 'reasons'

Same as Resident 7.

Excellent looking and playing games that have a massive millstone round their neck.

This irks me as much as QTE's.

The only downsides are probably Sherry's hide and seek part and losing the A/B scenarios from the original, but aside from that, it's almost a perfect game.

I must be in the minority but I didnt like that Mr.X was there from the start. Because it prevented me from enjoying the police station and just checking out all the little details. Instead, I always had to run away from time to time and rush elsewhere. Yeah I know thats the point but it worked far better when you had scenario A and B. It really did surprise you the first time you notice him.

I play through it at least 3 times per year if not more.

It and 3 remake are games that flow really well once you know what to do so A to B to C is so much fun.

It's a fun game, what fear and risk? The series is largely bombastic action in a horror B movie theme since inception, not actually horror like Silent Hill or similar stuff, though older games leaned a bit less on the action with their somewhat more scarce ammo resources you saved for bosses etc.

Also, they've added third person to RE8 with the expansion. The main game is fully playable too though cut scenes and such still switch back to first person as that's how they were designed without character animations and what not which would be too much work to redo for all of that stuff.

It's best to shoot them in the head till they fall down then hit them with the knife till they quit reacting, that's the most ammo to knife durability efficient way to go about it if you don't want to just run past them.

Unless it's scripted to happen like in the safety deposit room after you take the shotgun/grenade launcher, zombies won't roam from the room they're already in to another room unless you attack them and make them stumble into another one, or if another enemy bumps them into another one.
